can i suggest a backup for the backup? i've used an external hd for backup before but it also did get corrupt. so now i have a backup for the backup.

Whilst fool-proof, a little unnecessary? Surely if your backup gets corrupt, you just backup from the Original again?

Saying that, you'd have to be pretty unlucky for both the original and backup to corrupt at the same time, which did happen to me recently with my iTunes drive.

i would recommend a back up drive as well, in addition to the time machine drive.

I just had my laptop drive go out, same with my backup. Odd circumstances. I pieced it all back together from various computers, but having 2 backups would have made it easier.

So now I have 2 backups, plus off site in a safe deposit box. Just want to keep pictures and important docs safe in case of a fire at the house.
