O.K., bear with me while I do some online reasoning.

1. In order for the iPhones to be in the stores on July 11, the manufacturers had to start producing them weeks, or maybe even months ago.
2. That means that many are sitting in warehouses somewhere worldwide.
3. The betas of 2.0 have still been coming up until recently. They are still in Beta right now, as far as I can tell.
4. Unless Mobile.Me can also push Software, and Firmware...... and only if you have an account with them, as most people don't.....
5. I'd say that everyone will have to upgrade the software/firmware through iTunes, or have it done while waiting in the store where you purchase it.
6. This should really tie up the Servers!!!! In addition to waiting inline to get all of your questions answered about an account, upgrade eligibility, and other things.

I agree. It will have 2.0 but it will be an earlier version that will need to be updated either during activation or through iTunes. It makes sense that it would happen in stores or you would have people running around with old firmware that might not do everything it should.

This has been the case for the last two iPods I bought. As soon as I plugged them in, iTunes told me an update was available.

was it specifically stated that the app store would go up on the 11th, or was it just the release of the iphone 3g?

I think the only specific thing said about firmware 2.0 was "early July."

Most people default that to July 11th with the iPhone 3G.

I don't see how Apple could advertise the 2.0 software and Apps Store on their website and not have it released by July 11. Hopefully it will just be pre-installed, but I could see the phone updating when being activated.

I remember hearing on the keynote that it was to be released early july. Don't you think they would have said that it was coming out when 3g iphone does? I think Phil said it (chubby dude, with grey hair combed back)

I can pretty much guarantee that the iPhone 3G will not ship with OS 2.0 on it - think about it, they have yet to get a final OS 2.0, yet Apple has millions of the devices that they had manufactured and shipped from China a while ago. You really think they have the time to install the firmware on millions of iPhones in warehouses, even if they started today?

It's pretty simple, since they already require hooking up to iTunes, and there's going to be a brand new version of iTunes that's required to work with OS 2.0, just have that version of iTunes force the upgrade.

If I remember correctly, Steve said early July. That was before he talked about the iPhone 3G. I took that as he didn't want to give a date before he talked about the iPhone 3G and announced its date.

I could be wrong though; I only watched it once.

I think it was Peter Oppenheimer who said that it would be late June. I haven't heard anything to the contrary that would lead me to believe it won't be late June for 2.0 software.

I guess you didn't hear some guy named Steve Jobs or something say "early July."

Since the 3G iPhones are being activated in-store it would make sense that whomever is doing the activating would just install the 2.0 update then.

How odd would that be if it actually was released on my bday July 8th

About as odd as the Aluminum iMacs coming out on mine. :)

Steve knows how to gift, doesn't he?

I personally think there's a 99% chance it'll be on the 11th, although that's pretty widespread. I say 99% because he may want a surprise for everyone to compensate for his "late June" comments. Not very likely though.

I dont think they require activating using iTunes... coz this will form a bond between your iphone and the genius bar mac, and it would have to sync wth the genius bars itunes... and this just doesntmake sense..

Not true.
If you had a default with your iPhone and had it replaced with a new one at the Apple Store, they were activated on the computers at the Genius Bar.

There's no such thing as "a bond" between your iPhone and any computer. You can sync the iPhone with any computer you want at any time.
I've had my iPhone synced with 3 different computers.

AppStore is part of 2.0...then again, it's big enough to separate =).

Hmm, I wonder if MobileMe would come out on that very same day too. :)

I believe i've read in various places that according to system requirements, you also have to have 10.5.4, and the new iPhone specs have an iTunes bump also so look for all the following at the same time

.mac -> mobileme
mac OSX 10.5.4
iphone software 2.0
itunes 7.7

or they might be able to find someone to write some software that would work for just activating the phone. Not sure if they could though
but like JBaker said, I've had to get a replacement phone, they activated at the genius bar, the phone worked, with my phone #, then i had to go home and re-sync to get all my contacts and stuff back

This is probably what will happen.
Which will make the wait for 3G iPhones even longer again on launch day....

people you will not have to open your iphone box at the store for activation!!! they will link your purchase with your ATT account or will set you up a new one, you sync your phone at home via itunes

It would be very strange if Apple releases the 3G iPhone with 1.1.4 and you have to update it at home to 2.0.

The more I think about it, the more a July 8th date seems like the best way to go for Apple for 2.0 and the App Store launch.

This will create a lot of hype and anticipation for people thinking of getting the 3G phone a few days later. Their friends who already have iPhones will be showing off the new apps to them, and this will get them even more exicted for their upcoming purchase.

Plus, debuting the app store a few days before the 11th will allow all the current iPhone owners to hog up all the App Store bandwith for a few days, leaving it a little more free for the 3G owners later on. The last thing Apple needs is more complications with the 3G phone purchase! There may already be lines on launch day, and then complications with a possible in-store activation process. If the App Store was ALSO launched that day, and it was difficult or too slow to download anything right away, it could be a pile of frustrations on top of each other, making the initial iPhone experience not a very pleasant one.

So I think it would be smart for Apple to release 2.0 and the App Store a wee bit early.

I disagree. If current iPhone owners suddenly get a new lease of life on their old iPhones (by installing new apps), they may decide not to buy a new one.

The smartest thing Apple could do is to delay the software upgrade for V1 phones until a few days after the v2 has been released.
