people you will not have to open your iphone box at the store for activation!!! they will link your purchase with your ATT account or will set you up a new one, you sync your phone at home via itunes

Wow, making random claims with nothing to back it up? There are many sources of info stating otherwise, including an official interview with AT&T, where AT&T specifically told Engadget "You will need to walk out of the AT&T or Apple store with the device activated."

It would be very strange if Apple releases the 3G iPhone with 1.1.4 and you have to update it at home to 2.0.

Why? That's how the current iPhone works. You can't use it until you take it home and hook it up to iTunes. What's the difference? They could do the full update at the store rather than just activate it, but that alone would take 10 minutes.

I disagree. If current iPhone owners suddenly get a new lease of life on their old iPhones (by installing new apps), they may decide not to buy a new one.

The smartest thing Apple could do is to delay the software upgrade for V1 phones until a few days after the v2 has been released.

I would actually go as far as saying the V1 phone shouldn't get the update at all. That would surely get people to upgrade for the App Store.

I can see your point. BUT -- anyone who was planning to upgrade from 1st gen to 2nd gen is ONLY doing so for the 3G speeds anyway -- and is therefore going to upgrade no matter what.

And man...if Apple purposely delayed 2.0 for original iPhone owners, that would piss off a LOT of people. It's going to be the same day, or earlier -- not later.

I don't understand why a majority believe that the release of the 2.0 software is going to be at the same time as the release of the iphone 3g. Steve Jobs specifically said in his keynote that the much anticipated software update would be released "EARLY" July.

Now, I know that a bunch of you word nazis are going to say July 11th is early july, but Steve Jobs also gave a specific date on when the iphone 3g would be released. If he is going to release the software update at the same time as the hardware, he would have given the same exact date instead of EARLY July.

Anything past July 11th would be mid July, so a post-3G release probably is out of the question unless there are delays. A pre-3G release is still a possibility based on Jobs' words at his keynote even if it's only a day or two before the 7/11.

When I watched the keynote presentation, I thought it was interesting that the release date of the iPhone 3G was announced but no specific date was mentioned about the 2.0 software upgrade. That always felt like there was a chance the update could arrive ahead of the release of the new phone. Perhaps Jobs held off on mentioning a date since he was talking about the software first and then later the iPhone 3G. Were we supposed to assume the software update shared the same release date? We'll soon find out.

As for what's in the box, of course the iPhone 3G will have version 2.0 of the software. I don't believe version 1.1.4 can run a 3G phone. Sure - maybe there will be a small update once you get the phone home. They are free to update the software all they want up until release and then they have to follow their public update release protocols for when the software is finally in the consumers hands. So it wouldn't surprise me if they make some tweaks between the time they package the iPhones and July 11th.

So, I've had some time to let it all soak in... Right now, I'm more excited about the software update and the new software/games than the iPhone 3G. I don't think I will be upgrading my phone on July 11. It's kinda nice if you think about it. Apple is continuing to make the current iPhone better while releasing a new model. Their focus must be on making new customers rather than getting folks to upgrade, cause I don't feel that have-to-have-it impulse right now. But if I were in one of the countries where it will be totally new, I'd probably be first in line.

Is that knowledge based on a rumor posted from a few weeks ago, or has it actually been officially announced some where?

i read it on a website called stuff.tv heres the link to that page where i saw ithttp://stuff.tv/News/Apple-App-Store-good-to-go-on-27-June/10214/

I completely agree. It's all about marketing.

Well the saddest part in all that is that the push technology will not be included in the SDK before September. Which means that Google will probably nt release a MobileMe-like software before October...

MobileMe (push email, calendar, contacts) will be available in "early July", Jobs said it in the keynote and is all over the internet. I think you are thinking of "push notification AIM" which is slated for September.

It's not just AIM. It's the Push Notification Service. This will be available to ALL developers as S.Jobs said which means that Google may notify me when I get a new email in my gmail mailbox or a new appointment in my Gcal....

...which would have had to have been more than a month ago, thus no point in having OS 2.0 on the system, as it would have been a really early beta. I don't see why people think the iPhone 3G has to be ready to go out of the box, since it requires that you hook it up to iTunes anyways no matter what. All Apple has to do is have the new iTunes (which is required for the iPhone 3G) force-install OS 2.0 on 3G iPhones when first hooked up.

Gotcha, back on board now.

Maybe it's a totally different beast, but when I bought my refurb iPhone from AT&T, the phone worked before I connected it to my iTunes at home. The AT&T salesperson activated my phone and installed the SIM card. When he handed me the phone, it was running - I just didn't have a data plan yet or any songs/etc installed. Then when I got home and connected it to my mac, I remember updates being installed, but it didn't have to install the entire software. It had an earlier version already on it.

The reason I mention this is because you have to think about what's going to happen at the Apple and AT&T stores on July 11th when you have hundreds of people lined up wanting an iPhone 3G. If the phones have to be setup and activated prior to leaving the store, just what will that involve? Can it be done without removing the iPhone from the box? Or will the process just involve setting up the AT&T contract and installing the SIM card with the rest done at home via iTunes? Seems like you'd have to have some version of 2.0 on the iPhone 3G at the time of purchase or else the software will have to be added at the store and that would take forever.

I'm sorry, but where are your sources, because there is a lot of information that says otherwise. Please don't make completely speculated claims, it is only going to lead to confusion about the truth.

Purchasing will already take longer than the current iPhone due to in-store activation. Now tack on updating which will take ten minutes? :(

+1.

But I do have to wonder how it will go:

"Okay, iPhone 3G is going in stock."

Everyone rushes in to buy it.

Few minutes later.

"Attention. If you are purchasing the 3G iPhone, please open your box before reaching the counter for activation."

Everyone: "wtf!"

i sure hope 2.0 is released really soon. this week or next week would be amazing. hopefully not the week of the 3G release. ugh. i dont want to wait that long. oh well. whatever happens happens. i just know that in two and a half weeks i will be able to be playing some sweet games and do some other cool stuff on my iphone finally

Why would they need to open the box?

Every phone I've ever bought was activated by scanning the barcode on the side. Apple have one for the product and one for the serial number. The networks simply attach that Serial Number to their unique IMEI number and in about an hour or so you're set to go.

Ain't nobody opening my box but me when I get to the comfort of my own home.

I hope that's true with the iPhone activation. I've never had AT&T but at Verizon they always have to open the box, remove the phone, turn it on, and activate it. I hate that. I don't like anyone else opening the box but me. They are never gentle with them either.

Then you ain't buying an iPhone 3G. It doesn't matter what other phones do, iPhones have to be activated by being tethered to a PC before they can be used, regardless of whether you have an account with AT&T and a working activated sim - it's how they currently work, you can currently take yours home and do it there. But the new official policy with AT&T is that they have to activate the device before it leaves their store. This isn't a rumor or speculation, AT&T themselves announced it.
