I'm 99% sure when I place my order tomorrow I'll be clicking on the 2.00Ghz button. This is mainly due to the fact that I ordered a 30" Apple Cinema Display today instead of the intended 23" Apple Cinema Display.

In hindsight, I think I made the decision as I'll notice the increased resolution much, much more than the extra oomph in the processor.

I'll keep the thread updated with my decision.

With the 30" in there, it does get kind of expensive. I would get 2 23" though.
How much did you pay for your RAM again?
Going the route you are considering is actually decent for saving a bit. The total is under $4500 and you only paid like $100 something bucks for the HD I think. Depending on the Ram, yu could potentially have a top of the line system and monitor for under $5000US.

Go with what you feel at purchase time though. I know after paying $5k for a system, if that little spinning ball shows up while using Aperture, I would be HOT.
Let us know how the 30" goes also. That thing is huge.

So after everyone telling you to get the 2.66ghz you get the 2ghz? Why ask then? 2ghz is bad decission. Its no faster than an imac really. Plus I just sold my 30" cinema. Too large and text too small. Very happy with my 24" Dell. Perfect resolution, but that is all subjective I guess. Apple 30" not worth the money when you can get the dell for $600 less.

It is his choice. Maybe no one really gave him a good case as to why he should by the 2.66. It sounds like he was being smart with his funds. The 30" ACD possibly made the decision a little easier.

Display is subjective as well. Maybe he has used a 30" and enjoyed it.

No need to bash him for making a decision. Glenn, I am sure you will be happy with it. Besides you can always drop dual quads in later :D

Read the thread. A few people commented that a 2Ghz machine would suffice for his needs. Considering he spent the surplus on upgrading his screen real estate, I can see where he's coming from. He's young. I'm sure his eyes will be able to handle the 30" screen.

Sure but if his main modivation is to save money, hence not getting a 2.66ghz to save $400, then isn't it kind of stupid to get the apple cinema when he can get the dell 30" for $600 less? It just doesn't make sense, its like the same panel.

Your needs do not equal everyones needs.

You will definitely notice the increased screen real estate, and all the time, much more than the extra oomph in the processor. Which, given what you're using the machine for at least to start with, you would never notice. And the difference in procs is minimal even if you were doing something which pushed them to 100% all the time.

ALSO, upgrading the processor is possible. Getting more screen real estate is not. (Save for buying an entirely new screen of course.)

Good choices for your needs. Enjoy! :apple:

We don't know what price he got on the Apple display in the deal he mentioned.

And then there's the little thing of the Apple display being Apple. I'm sure Glenn is aware Dell displays exist. As does most everybody else who buys an ACD.

The real world difference between the 2.0 and 2.66 is pretty modest, certainly not the more substantial difference between tolerable versus intolerable that some people seem to be implying. We're talking about a difference of a few seconds in many cases. Are a few seconds worth $400+? That's up to the individual. Some people on a budget would rather put that money towards other components of the system and that's perfectly reasonable. To say it was a bad decision is thoughtless and unreasonable IMO.

My initial plan was a 24" Dell monitor, but when it came to the snap I decided I wanted the added style of the Apple monitor. I've used one before, I can handle it.

The 30" Apple Cinema Display pretty much made my mind up, as I decided the finds would be better spent on the screen that the extra processor oomph.

Exactly, what's ten seconds here and there when I have this great display to enjoy. The 2.00Ghz will suit me fine, if it doesn't down the line, that's why I'm buying a Mac Pro - upgradability.

Instead of paying the normal $2850 NZD for the 30" Apple Cinema Display, I found a deal and picked it up for $2200. That's $1 more than the Dell 30" monitor, so it was a no-brainer in my opinion to stick with the Apple brand.

Awesome find on the screen deal mate! Jeez! Post some photos once the whole thing's set up. :)

I sure will! 30" Apple Cinema Display arrived this afternoon. I just un-boxed it to see how it looked (which was amazing). Now it's sitting back in the box waiting for me to order the Mac Pro.

Nice. The box for that 30" is huge man. I was looking at the 2.0 model, and it will still be very fast considering that its quad core.
Your setup is going to be pretty up there with the best though. :)

BTW
Aren't you selling your iMac?
That probably would have been a viable option, so you could have the dough for the 2.66. Thats what I normally do when it comes to computers. i sold my iMac to offset the price of a Macbook, which ended up paying for it in that case.

I have been looking at the Mac Pro for a bit and glenn, technically, if you were going to go 2.0 you should have gotten a 24" iMac with an additional screen. Bumping the iMac up to 2.33 and maxing out the RAM, with what you would be using it for, it would have been more than enough. Plus you didn't have to worry about things like isight and all of that.

I think I might go with the 24" iMac instead of the Mac Pro, and get a 23" monitor. With the $1300 or so bucks I save I may take my wife out for a night on the town or something.

IMO you can't compare the Mac Pro to an iMac.

Mac Pro = upgradeability. Exactly what he's looking for. The iMac has it's graphic card soldered to the board.....

Chalk and cheese.

Thing is, upgrading the processor on the Mac Pro at best, is a gamble. You also lose your warranty. "Upgrade it after 3 years" is kind of garbage also, because chances are, in 3 years processors will be at 5.0 or even 6.0 and he may need a new motherboard as well.
The iMac would be cheaper, and suite his needs for about 4-5 years.
The key line in my comment was "for what you would be using it for".

In addition, its stupid to compare the iMac to the Mac Pro. Doubt I was doing that.

Just placed my order, I couldn't help it but I went with the 2.66Ghz

Final specs will be: Mac Pro 2 x 2.66Ghz, 3GB RAM, 250GB + 500GB HDD, BT + AE. 30" Apple Cinema Display.

Did u get the Apple Remote? You can't have a 30 inch Apple Cinema Display without front row imo.

NICE. Good choice my man. So with the Mac Pro, you can use front row if you purchase Blue tooth right? I was always thinking that the Mac Pro did not have Front Row.

Thanks! You have to do a little hacking to get Front Row to work on the Mac Pro, that also includes purchasing an IR receiver from a third-party, the Bluetooth module doesn't connect with the remote in any way.

I'm just going to hold out till Leopard when Front Row comes bundled with the OS, it'll save me some hassle + guilt in the meantime.

I am pretty sure that Front Row is loaded in OS X for the Mac Pro. It's just that the Mac Pro does not have an infra-red receiver that causes Front Row not to work. If i am not wrong, the hack tricks the OS into assuming that you have an IR receiver so that Front Row will work. Anyone, correct me if i am wrong.

But congratulations on your purchase. I am sure you will enjoy the speediness and quietness of the Mac Pro. Have fun.
