I just did a test as I thought that I was getting my mail regularly either. Lo and behold, fetch for gmail hadn't checked in over an hour. As soon as I checked manually, it downloaded a piece of mail. I have it set for every 15 minutes and *sometimes* it seems to do it on its own, but not often. I hope they fix this soon.

E-mail was properly fetching for me for the first few days I had my iPhone, but now it doesn't work at all. I hope it's fixed in 2.2 :(.

I was actually thinking about this thread last night. Once or twice, I've had the problem in 2.1 where not only does automatic fetching not happen following the situation of inconsistent wifi access I described above, but manual fetches also hang (stuck at "connecting," no mail is retrieved, but the mail app is not locked up or anything).

I found that the easiest solution to this is to force quit Mail (hold the home button down until the mail program closes and the home screen appears); after that, it received mail again fine.

Still a bug, though...don't get me wrong.

I'll have to try this. Thanks. I tried force quitting Mail. We'll see if it helps.

No prob. :) I don't think it's preventative though -- I think that, if Mail stops cooperating, you can force quit it and restart it, and then it should immediately get mail.

It's just a better / quicker alternative to rebooting the phone.

But I haven't had this happen enough times to say for sure that it always solves the issue.

My fetch is working fine because I have it set to manual.

Push on the other hand, I have push via microsoft exchange and it USED to work like a dream with 2.0 and 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 but since I updated to 2.1 I find that sometimes its not getting the new emails until I go into the email app.

30 minute fetch hasn't work for me since 2.1 on either of my accounts (GMail and my university email).
