well.... it arrived yesterday, 2.93 quad, 8gb Ram, ati, nec reference 2690, PS3.... what can i say, I'm more than impressed. Opened up a file from my portable WD of about 96 26mb raw files in camera raw, an action that would have take my old computer till thursday if ever to complete, this thing opened them in about ten seconds and i mean all of them, first twenty were instant and thats from a usb2 cable???, anyway i haven't had much time to mess about properly so if anyones interested I'll post again.... by the way i'm not sure if its the ATI card or the new monitor but that screen looks incredible.

I can tell you as I do have the MultiSync 2690 WUXi: it is the monitor
Still one of the best you can get for what you are doing.
And obviously (?!) it seems to have no problems with the ATI 4870 at all.
sure is, had the spectraview connected to my g4 but this is a thousand times better and i'm still only plugging into the vga port, think it'll get even better in the dvi when i buy the cable they forgot to include... have no hesitation, cost an arm and a leg but worth for sure in my opinion.... actually looking forward to working on computer for once... 
Or it doesn´t at all as the mentioned problem of ATI and 2690 has been reported by DVI use
