ok, everyone, listen up: there will be NO touchscreens

the only reason I see for which the new model would have touchscreen, is because Leopard would have touchscreen/multitouch controls, but it doesn't

no, it's not a "secret feature", cause if Leopard did have multitouch, apple would have announced it at WWDC, so the devs could make custom apps for it...

Damn, I'm really curious what their gonna do to it.

My wish list:

- Top model, quad core
- 30" display though I don't see this happening
- height adjustment, tilt is great but no replacement for height adjustment.
- hopefully bluray read/burn, this will probably only happen after the Pro models get the same option.
- built-in H.264/Mpeg2/Mpeg4 encoder/decoder
- Mac Pro/MBP Look anodized aluminium
- FW800 in 20" model
- VESA mountable for both 20" and 24"

iPhone is not THAT expensive, and it has multitouch. Why would iMac be? And, of course, if they do release multitouch-iMacs/screens, they would also make sure that they have software that can use it. And OS X already supports touchscreens.

Are you honestly comparing a 3.5" screen to a 20" or 24" screen? Wow. I'll wager the larger screen costs somewhat more.

My head is spinning from some of the nonsense spewed in this thread. This is how absurd expectations get built up. And then, when Apple comes out with a solid update and a nice redesign, you'll have legions here crying that they'll never buy Apple again because they didn't include a touchscreen, or a combo HDDVD/Bluray burner, or a minifridge.

It will also have Santa Rosa platform, correct? That means in August we are going to buy a new system that is already 3 months old

"The code-name Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform, which was released on Wednesday 9 May 2007."

jfc, some of you guys are ridiculous.

A touchscreen is not stupid. As screens get bigger it takes longer to guide our mouse pointers across them. For instance it is impossible with a mouse to open two folders simultaneously at opposite sides of a screen or move one window out the way while you move another across. In the long run as technologies develop multi-touch could well become a productive tool and not a novelty.

Actually that would depend on resolution not screen size.

iMac too Late for Halo

I was sure they were going to revise the iMac before the iPhone release. There's going to be a lot of people buying the iPhone as their first Mac product, thought Apple would try and get them to buy a new iMac Pro before they leave the store!?

Hope the rumor's wrong and we get an update by next Tuesday!!

A lot of people are going to be disappointed when the imac does not have a touch-screen or two hard-drives. Maybe we expect too much from Apple. Apple leads more in style and integration than cutting edge implementation of technologies.

Well i have used the HP touchscreen and i dont like it its strange dragging windows aroundw ith your finger and closing them so i dont think we will see a screen that is touchable maybe something like a wacom you can buy like you can already but noit actually touching the screen! What is everyone obsession with touchscreen anyway it would be crap for greaphic designing unless they make it super duper good quality touchscreen.

I just wanna see a new update so i dont have to worry about another update coming soon and then i wont have the neest hardware. I hope a 8600GT 2gb ram 250gb HDD adn a 2.2GHz as standard in 20"

It'll be a "rev. a", whenever the new design appears. And if previous releases can serve as a relevant precedent, that means, "Wait for rev. b," for me at least.

o_O. I was going to get an iMac next week, btu after hearing this I think i'll wait. =D

Do any of you know if the 20" iMacs will come down to the 17" price range seeing as though the 17" is being discontinued?

Just bought a New 20 inch iMac

Howdy everyone... I've been so sick of hearing about new iMac rumors and nothing actually materialising! It's made me think quite philosophical about the whole thing. One guy from these forums mentioned last week that at the end of the day, it's only a computer and nothing to get so stressed about. Well, whoever you are, you have set me free.

Whilst it's fun to speculate and rumorise (new word!) about new Apple products you have to draw a line somewhere, otherwise no-one would get anything done! Personally I love the current iMac design. I also get 10 days to decide if I want to keep it or not.

So anyhow, I just purchased the following:

20 inch 2.16GHz C2D iMac
2GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 256MB RAM
250GB Hard drive

And all for the fine sum of £1,098 as opposed to £1,169. A saving of £71!

No need to enter a coupon code, just be nice to the person on the phone and they will do you a deal. I'm sure others may have better deals to talk about but I'm more than happy with this. This iMac will last me a while hopefully.

So, free yourselves from the grasp of the "must have latest/greatest" brigade and just go out and buy yourself the computer that suits you and your budget.

When was the last time Apple had widespread 'rev a' issues with a desktop computer?

I don't see a redesigned iMac having serious issue. Unless they go back to the lamp and have issues with the DVD tray hitting the back of the screen again...

The mouse is really the most efficient way to interface with with a computer. It requires extremely little hand movement to perform tasks all across the screen. It takes me a lot longer to move my hand (and the arm it is connected to) from one edge of my screen to the other than it takes me to move my mouse the same distance, plus it takes a lot more effort as well.

I agree that touchscreen has a lot of great uses (especially for people standing like presenters, cashiers, minority report detectives, and people using public kiosks) but for a traditional desktop, I see it as rather inefficient.

An earlier poster mentioned that scrolling is so taxing with a mouse, but I know that personally I never use the down arrow key to scroll unless I am only going to be scrolling for a long time. The mouse just works.

Erm - you missed the Rev A G5 iMac PSU malarky, I take it. Later extended to
Rev B iMac PSU malarky (in which guise I met it).

Hahaha... Just a minor miscalculation. Mine does that. ;)

Think it's time for a new computer, guys? 800MHz is starting to feel a little sluggish... ;););)

(really what I need is a raise... so I can afford a new computer.)

God that's so funny, minifridge! Some macboys really are living in a dream!

BTW I hear they're discussing the existence of the new iMac on 'secondcomingrumors.com'.....

I was set to get a new MacBookPro but this gives me pause. It isn't a big deal since I have to wait 4-6 weeks for the fast drive so it would be great if the new iMacs come in that time.

If they're revolutionary I may opt for a top-of-the-line iMac and a bottom-of-the-line MacBook.

If merely evolutionary, I'll snag the top 15" MBP + a 23(?)" ACD.

Naturally cost may enter into the picture...

Memory Access?

I really hope within this new sleek design, Apple will still provide access to upgrade memory. I'm sure they will, it'll be interesting to see how it's incorporated. I currently have the iMac 24 inch, loaded with 3 gig of non-Apple memory (Apple memory is way to expensive) and while the chin doesn't bother me that much, I do appreciate the memory access.

What purpose would opening two folders simultaneously? Humans have a very limited ability to perform true multi-tasking. If we're purging files or something, I could see the use of opening two folders and dragging files to the trash with two or more fingers... but otherwise it would be useless for the tasks you mention. The mouse is way more efficient. I can go corner to corner by moving my mouse a mere six inches... and better yet, I could continue moving my mouse back and forth six inches at a time for the duration on an entire day. The same cannot be said about a 21" arm movement.

Unless the iMac is a "convertable" (into a tablet) I don't see it having a touchscreen.

Oh and by the way: to all those calling for an "Apple Display iMac," that does not constitue a "striking new industrial design," and in my opinion would look worse than the chinMac, believe it or not. Every Apple design has knocked my socks off except for the chin so unless they move dramatically away from that design, I will not be happy.

That does make me wonder...what would a 'striking new design' for an iMac look like? I agree that a brushed metal iMac like the cinema displays wouldn't really fit the bill (though I, personally, would like it). So I wonder what we could be looking at. Each major new design for the iMac was a radical departure from previous designs. I just can't figure out how Apple can keep that up. Seems like the current design is about as good as you can get (just fine-tuning, like removing the chin, making it slimmer, etc.).
