I traded in a 4 and a 4S today at my local Verizon store. Got myself a 16GB iPad Retina for free. :)

Did you already have your iPhone 6?

----------

Didn't get lucky - it's their official policy. But I agree all the misinformation folks like you have ran into is indeed a clusterf***. It's a shame they can't get their people on the same page with their policy.

Was just chatting with VZW reps for fun now, they said I had to order form Verizon directly and that during the trade-in process they would need your order confirmation.

They're really just making **** up now.

This deal got me so excited, but then I called Verizon twice to confirm the process and backed away thinking (like others here have said) it's a clusterf**k of inconsistent information.

For those that have successfully traded in a phone at Verizon ONLY (sorry, I don't need more conflicting info from people who haven't gone through the actual process):

-- If I walk in with my pristine 4S, select an iPhone 6 in store (no pre-order elsewhere), AND sign up for a new 2-year contract w/ Verizon.... can I take that $200 gift card and apply it to my account RIGHT THEN? Essentially rendering the cost of the iPhone 6 device either free (for 16GB) or $99 (for the 64GB). Does that make sense?

I don't want to be charged for the new phone, and a new phone account, while being handed a gift card to be used sometime later with Verizon. I want as clean a transaction as possible.

And what is the logic behind saying with this process we're just paying $650 monthly over the course of 2 years? I don't understand that. When I purchased my 4S, I had an eligible upgrade with Verizon and paid $99 (upgrade price in early 2013) for the device, and carried right on with my normal monthly bill payments. There was no device charge spread across 2 years.

Any better explanations of what that's all about?

That is correct.

There have now been multiple confirmed reports of this.

The implication is than in addition to the "reduced" upfront cost of the phone, a subsidy is built into each 2-year contract, but carriers have never and will never (willingly) disclose the exact amounts of said subsidies.

What if the line is still under contract?

Your line isn't yet eligible for an upgrade?

Update: According to multiple people, VZW reps are stupid and just go into your local store to trade your phone in. It can be from any retailer and does not have to ordered directly from Verizon.

Verizon updated it's FAQ for the iPhone trade-in promotion, and it now contains more pertinent details: Trade-In Program FAQs

tmobile kicks out $352 for the 5s 16g model and up, i kept the phone...wont trade in because its paid for

On my way home from work on Friday (launch day) I stopped in a VZW store to see if they had a demo of each so I can check it out before I ordered. I was able to check them out and found out they had what I wanted in store. I traded in my beat up but working IP5. They gave me a $200 instant deduction off my iPhone 6 and I just paid the difference + fee and tax.
I made them wipe the phone in front of me.

Could I have made a few more bucks? Sure, was this the easiest $200 for a phone? Yes it was, now I need to take my wifes 4S in.

Easy as can be.

Rob

I went to my local verizon store on Saturday...traded in my wife's 4s and was able to walk out with 2 otterbox cases (one for her 6 and one for my 6), car charger, screen protectors and $100 off my next bill....I was happy..didn't think I would get the gift card same day.

Did you already have your iPhone 6 with you?

Did you also already have your iPhone 6?

Not sure if anyone said this, but you can look at my 20 page thread for reference.

The original policy REQUIRED the phone to be purchased through VerizonWireless.com, but they opened it up to Premium Retailers and Local Agents (not BBY, RadioShack, etc) to allow you to trade the phone in online and still purchase the phone in store.

I spent $100 on an old iphone4 on craigslist to trade in for $200, not a bad deal imo

And you've already completed the transaction? Some have been saying that the must be tied to your account somehow.

----------

Correct. Upgrade won't be available until late November.

The gentleman who is quoted below, is undoubtably more well-informed than I, but it's my belief that you can't do anything until you have fulfilled the extent of your contract.

I have an iPhone 4 here that's fully functional but did get some water in the headphone jack causing the water indicator to turn red. For those of you who traded in your iPhones in-store, did they check the water damage indicators at all?

I'm assuming if there's a crack in the front glass of my iPhone 4S, the $200 promotion won't apply to me?

I assume Apple is a premium retailer?

So I went to my local Verizon store with the intention of trading in an old iPhone 4 for $200 towards the purchase of an iPhone 6 at full, no contract pricing. The Verizon rep didn't let me do so. He said they can only do trade-ins for people eligible for 2 year contract pricing or if I'm on that stupid Verizon Edge program which I'm not. Is this guy full of you know what? I'm going to try again in a couple days.

So my question now is, has anybody in my scenario been able to do the trade-in in-store?

Does the iPhone 6 have to be purchased from Verizon? For example, as a Verizon customer, can I get a iPhone 6 at Costco and get $200 back for my iPhone 4 at Verizon?

I did a few trades in for Verizon 6 using iPhone 4 already. So I hope to clarify some points for you:

1/ You can either upgrade, sign new contract OR even get the iPhone 6 outright without contract

Here the quote from their website "You will receive a $200 VZW Trade-in Gift Card when you trade in your old iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, or iPhone 5c, and purchase a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus with a new Verizon Edge agreement, 2 year contract, or when you pay full retail price."

2/ You can do it in-store,

I called and confirm with the rep at Recycling Department and did 4 trades in-store. They gave me 4 gift cards (emailed to you instantly).

However, there's a store I got denied and asked to do it online.
Please insist on the policy or call the Recycling Department Rep right there to force them to make the trade for you

3/ For those that can find the iphone 6 you want instore, they will instantly give you $200 of the purchase price, ie you can trade your iphone 4 for their iphone 6 with $0 out of pocket.

4/ You MAY buy from other retailers and successfully trade in

The rep that did the trade for me only look at the ESN of my new Verizon iPhone 6.
Few of my new iPhones 6 not even activated yet.
So I best advice is to walk to the store, say vaguely that you just got the iPhone 6 and ask to trade your iphone 4.
Show them the ESN on the iPhone 6. AFAIK, The store rep cannot check where the phone was purchased.

5/ Water damaged iPhone 4 that still functions properly and no screen crack still worth $200

Don't believe me? Go to Verizon trade in and click Yes on the water damage question (that's what the rep also do, click on those questionnaire to determine value).
The result value is still $200

Nothing on the website states it must be an iphone on your account, went through the questions on the website, they shipped me the package to return it, I shipped it in, still waiting on my $200 credit, but not worried in the least. I checked the fine print, nothing saying you can't repeat what I did.

Went in my local store today and they said I could only trade in the iPhone 4 if it was only active on your account. I told him I saw online this wasn't the case, but he insisted that was what his manager had just told him. I'm pretty sure the store just doesn't want to take these phone trade ins. So annoying.

I can confirm that trading in Verizon store works.

Although it might depend on the stores.

So if I bought my iphone 6 at an apple store, will Verizon trade it in? I went to one store but they said that I couldn't. They wouldn't show me where in the policy it says that it must be purchased at Verizon. I am thinking of trying another store.

Well the promotion to trade in phones at Verizon stores ended on 9/30.

You can still do it online though.
