Thanks for your concern, but I've got savings, no debt, and retirement savings plans. Oh, and I live in Canada, where I and every other citizen get terrific healthcare for free and where the government enjoys surpluses, not deficits.
Well, thank you for your thinly-veiled attack on the USA. Obviously, somone needs to be concerned for you! Your lack of business acumen is revealed by the fact that you're asking investment advice in this forum, where it's probably a good guess that a great number of the posters here are under 25 years of age, with no investment experience. And yet, you come here seeking investment advice! Do you also go to a neighborhood restaurant to get your car repaired? Or to a gas station for medical checkups?

Well you can't browse Pr0n on share certificate :)

The answer surely is, if you need a new computer, buy one. If you want to buy shares... wait a month or so..

Wow, sensitive much? :p

Exactly. Thanks for the laugh. You are 100% correct. Very odd question to ask this board.

No, if you buy the Mac, Apple gets your money.

If you buy the stock, the person selling it to you gets the money.

Apple hasn't received any money from the sale of its stock since its IPO.

:)

In any case, it's sort of an odd choice...If you need a computer, buy a computer, if you have money to invest, invest.

So, Apple would rather you buy a computer than their stock?

I think you can never go wrong with :apple: AAPL. You will get your money back and then some no question. The question is when , and in this economy its lookin longer and longer each day. I do not know what the target turn around you were searching for. But Since you are interested in a laptop and seem to be a wise spender, is a refurb an option u would consider? Maybe even seach around on eBay and then go a grand in laptop and put but another grand of :apple: stock?

Best of luck

With Apple stock trading at 33% off its high, I'm thinking about buying some more. But I also use a PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz with 1 GB RAM as my main computer, and I'm finding that it's finally feeling sluggish with a few web pages up and some other apps running.

Where should I dump my money?
Let me rephrase your question: should you buy a new toy or gamble your money in Vegas?

Do whichever one makes you happiest.

(Buying individual stocks, especially without solid research -- and arguably even with -- is gambling. The stock value is as likely to go up or down or any particular timeframe. Apple's done great the past eleven years. But if you bought last year near the $200 peak value, and sold this year, you'd have taken a 33% loss.)

I say the computer. The economy is at it's all time low and it's really NOT the best time to get involved with the stock market. Bush can say what he wants but when it really comes down to things were in a economic recesstion. If you do want to purchase some stock however, sell your old PB on ebay and use that cash to buy some apple stock (last I check it was 105.?? a share.) I could be wrong but selling that PB should buy you some.. not a whole lot =P. Bette then nothing right?

Might want to hold off for a few days on the stocks, but it might present you with an excellent time to buy. Just let it drop a bit more with the market as congress continues its showdown.

I agree.

Far too volatile for any type of value investing; wait for Congress to take action and take it from there.

Apple's products are going downhill - fast. The latest iPods show they've run out of ideas in that space and their computers are soon to get a new look that is going to make them uglier than anything sold by Dell or Compaq.

The last thing I'd be doing with my money right now is putting it into Apple.

Apple is going downhill? Maybe their stock is right now, but so is every other tech companies' if not the whole market. The first gen and second gen iPod nano didn't have much difference either and yet the second gen was one of the most popular iPods made. They haven't run out of ideas as shown by the iPod touch. They just want to milk the cow instead of releasing all their good ideas at once. Isn't that what all other companies do too? I'm sure Intel has something in their labs running at 4 Ghz while using 20W haha. As for the new laptops, can you shed some light on how they'll look? I would like to know :)

Wow, leave a thread for a few days and some of the crazies come out. It's amazing how often those who spout "common sense" can't figure out the basics of it.

And if you think my comments were "a thinly-veiled attack" on the US, you obviously wouldn't know an attack if it hit you in the face. I don't know how more direct I can be in saying that the the US is on a dangerous path whose main victim will be average joes with families and decent jobs.

Everyone knows stocks are a risk. Although slightly better than putting your money in a sewer. When I put up a post, I want people to respond... this is a forum!

For the record, I'm getting an extra stick of RAM for free from a friend (Thanks for a valid response, phatcat), bought stock today after the huge drop, and I'm getting a new Mac once I see the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The economy isn't doing bad for everyone, especially in countries where the government regulates a little.

Free healthcare? Canada's healthcare system is paid for with your taxes. It isn't free in the slightest. And terrific? hardly.

It's probably more the fact that many people make baseless, ignorant judgements about the US, its policies, and its people that upsets us. You don't think Canada shares some of the responsibility for this whole situation? You're dreaming.

The days of "America is always right" have to end. Our financial situation built on a Ponzi scheme beginning with de-reg by Reagan then expanded on by letting Wall Street dream up derivatives and other mysteries of inextricable puzzles have left not only the country in danger, but perhaps the world. Selling traunches to trusting souls was no accident, it was by design.

Sure, Canada's health care isn't "free", but at least they have it. They "bought" in to the concept that they're all in it together. By every measure the USA is last on the list of industrialized countries for infant mortality, lifespan, you name it. Bottom line: we kill babies to make a profit. I can think of nothing more abhorrent. And like the typical hyper-patriot, admitting complete failure or even admitting a simple wrong is an alien concept. Saying that Canada's health care isn't "terrific"? By what measure? All the one's I have seen put their health care on par with some of the best, and we know that THEIR lifespan and infant mortality are not just a little better than ours. So what do you have to back this up? Nothing but a meme I assume. That's just the Kool-Aid talking.

"Baseless, ignorant judgements" seem to be, for the moment, the eminent domain of Americans.

We need to look in the mirror.
Soon.

Oh, and back to the subject, buy the laptop. Inflation can't touch it.

My 2 cents (and that's all it's worth): buy the stock now. My bet would be that it bounces back up to at least the $140 - $150 range before the holidays. If it does, that profit should give you a nice headstart on buying a new Mac. ;) :)

Yawn.

Honestly, I'm glad SOMEONE realizes just how friendly we Americans really are. No matter how much we're dissed by everyone else, the worst we ever do is chew them out. Try doing that to someone in Iran and call me about it in a month - if you still have a tongue (or your life). :p

(I'm not going to join in on the politics/business banter going on here because I'M humble enough to admit that I'm too ignorant to pass judgement on these subjects.)
