coming from a G4 notebook myself, I'm in the same situation as you. The only reason I want the 15" is for anti glare. I actually prefer the size of the 13" and wish it wasn't glossy but we have no choice.. and I don't care about the 15-20% increase in performance on the 15" because it will do little for me.

so today I decided that it's not worth spending an extra grand only for anti-glare, and I can live with glossy if it means that I save close to $900.. I get so much more power than my G4 packed into that small footprint of the 13", it has all the same ports as the 15" so you can always connect to an external monitor (which can be matte, so you have the best of both worlds).. It just makes a lot more sense.

anyways.. I ordered a thinkpad last week but now that I'm fine with the 13" glossy idea.. I'm thinking about canceling my order and going with the 13" MBP for myself. ahhh, too many decisions to make here..

haha i hear ya! too many decisions to make, ditch thinkpad and get MBP~!
External monitor sounds great. I'm just thinking about connecting it to TV when I'm at home with wireless keyboard and all. I like how 13" MBP has all the same ports as 15"

That Arrandale wait was extremely painful.

To the thread starter: how are you able to get your new mac tax free? I plan on buying a new 15" i5, but New York State tax on a $1,799 machine is hell.

I have a friend in Oregon State who can help me out.
Also Amazon here in California don't charge tax. (but they don't have student discount, they don't have option for antiglare, also reading many threads it sounds like you will get better support when you purchase directly through Apple.) On my other thread other NewYorker informed me Amazon charges tax for people in NewYork.

If you ever wanted to visit Oregon, I would rather buy a plane ticket to Oregon for vacation rather than spending money on tax and buy MBP in Oregon without tax. But of course vacation can cost (unless you have great friend who can host you during your stay) and time is money.

Good call on the vacation, haha. Thanks for the info. I'm contemplating driving to New Hampshire (no sales tax) to pick up a laptop. Although it's an 8 or 9 hour drive...

Road Trip to New Hampshier~! Woohoo~!
Bring your friends along or other people you know who would have same interest in saving money. Split the gas fee. Turn that 8-9 hours into party~! :)

since you're getting the 1799 model of the 15" I'd get it here:B&H Macbook Pro section I shop there a lot and think the service is great. They actually have a huge store somewhere in NYC.

The prices are a little less to begin with, for example the 13" is only $1159 and the base 15" is only $1739.. granted you still have to pay tax but this deal might be better than spending time and gas to drive 9 hours.. I don't have to pay tax (yet) in my state when I shop here.. So it turns out to be a better deal than getting the student discount for me.

When you purchase outside Apple store, Apple Store doesn't exchange your product if anything goes wrong they only fix them, according to someone who purchased New MBP online through Amazon. This person had to return his MBP to Amazon and then purchase new one at apple store. Good thing Amazon had easy return policy. The difference between student discount with tax and $1159 without tax is about $50. I could also save more through B&H (i love B&H too). But in case something goes wrong product purchased at Apple store will be receiving better support for $50 more.

oh.. that's a good point that I didn't think of. Even if that's not true, I'd still rather just go to the apple store and get mine there.. That way I also get to enjoy the instant gratification since my apple store is about 5-10 min. down the road from me. This kind of thing only happens about once every 4 years.

I totally agree :) I'm going there tomorrow!

go with the base 15" i5. I had this same debate

I agree. The 13" is still the best 13" laptop out there, but, and this is obviously a matter of personal preference, when I go to a website, I want to see an entire page without scrolling. If you do not mind constant scrolling, and you prefer portability, the 13" is probably for you. Otherwise, the 15" is the way to go.
