No problem. Thanks for the clarification. Also note that November 11 is the day Intel begins shipping Harpertown in retail boxes which means Apple should have been in production for several weeks if not a month by then.

I think alot of people forget this when talknig about Intel release dates.

Stoakley/Seaburg is expected to arrive in November also.
I am very curious and anxious to see just when the next Mac Pro does come out.
It will be fun to see if we are correct about it having Stoakley/Seaburg/Harpertown.
But we've got to be correct or it would be out already.

I think Apple has everything in the channel for the rest year. They have some issues with products that they have recently released and they will need to get those issues resolved before they introduce any additional Revision "A" products.

I think that they wanted to have the back to school and the holiday shopping season in the can and locked & loaded. That is why we saw the flurry of product updates last week. I do think we might see a new iPod by September and then it is on to Leopard in October. Leopard will have the "halo" effect for all curent Macs in the product line, just like the bump they got with Adobe releasing CS3. Apple won't need to release the Mac Pro update until a later date when things get quite again.

Has Apple ever released new products in November?

BTW: MultiMedia, congrats & welcome to the world of Intel.

September and October have been new product months.

I'm thinking October is Leopard pre-release hyperbole month and that the HCC may need Leopard to run optimally. So although November releases are rare, this could be the right timing for it to happen this year - especially since Apple has to be flexible and work with Intel's production schedule.

Apple could announce the HSS Tuesday October 23 just before the Leopard release Friday October 26 (my guess) and say shipping next week. By then Leopard will have been Gold for several weeks and able to be installed in and put in the boxes of the early assembly line production that could begin as early as mid October. (my guess)

As soon as Leopard ships they can release the Leopard dependent HSS MP. Plus they'll gain a lot of creative business buyers who will want to buy one before year end for tax purposes.

I also think the 17" MBP may get a 2.6GHz option this Fall.

Thanks for the Intel welcome. Love the 1920 high by 1200 wide DELL 2405WFP that it can drive.

Can We Go Slightly Off-Topic For A Moment?

Since the discussion has touched on what might be the optimal memory upgrade on the 2.66 Mac Pro. Here is my scenario:

I have the 2.66 Mac Pro with 2GB (4x512), (It came that way when I bought it from MovieCutter). Memory prices have become more realistic as of late. If I wanted to buy 4GB how should I buy it (4x1GB or 2x2GB) if I keep the existing 2GB? Should I keep the 2GB (4x512) or should I sell it?

Your thoughts would be helpful.

I would keep the four 512's and add two 2GB sticks.

Left is the upper riser A and right is the lower riser B. This is how they are supposed to be arranged for maximum performance:

Probably good advice - 4x1GiB is slightly more (about $20) than 2x2GiB, and would fill all your slots.

4x1GiB might be slightly faster, but either way to 6 GiB will be a big improvement on your current 2 GiB.

Harpertown Goes Retail Sunday November 11

This is such a HARD piece of evidence Mac Pros will go Harpertown this Fall, I just have to reprint this for you all to easily see.

Bottom may be only 2GHz for $418 per pair for 16GHz
Looks like middle might be 2.5GHz for $632 per pair for 20 GHz
and the 3.16GHz on top for $2,344 per pair 25.28 GHz

RETAIL in spiffy boxes.

I think that's each costing less than what Apple pays for their current sets of Woodcrest & Clovertowns. But I can't find the Woodcrest-Clovertown prices right now. Help anyone?

This is pure speculation. I have no idea which sets they will choose to offer. But the bottom line is that a lot of owners of the first generation of Mac Pros might be able to upgrade those to 8 core fairly econnomically especially when you can buy a pair of quad core 2.66 GHz Harpertowns for less than $900 street or 2.5 GHz for around $600. Got me wanting to do it already. Aiden, will these Harpertowns work just fine in the original MP Logic Boards? Or do they contain circuitry that will defeat retrofit attempts? Or do you know?

Clovertown and Woodcrest Pricing

Here is the answer.
Clovertowns received a price cut but Woodcrest processor prices remained the same (except for the low-end Woodcrest which Apple doesn't use anyway).

Unless Apple asked for something to prevent this, they are backwards compatible. The current Xeon chipsets are meant to last well in to 2009. It's when Nehalem comes that things won't be compatible. It's possible we could see 2.5GHz, 2.83GHz, 3.16GHz lineup based on current processor price levels in the Mac Pro. Though I could see Apple trying to make large profit by offering 2.33GHz on the lowend with a small rebate for downgrading.

The All 8 Core MP Harpertowns Are Going To Be Very Affordable

Holy Cow! I was right in spades! That means the dual Harpertowns are going to cost Apple a LOT LESS than the dual Woodcrest & Clovertowns do right now (both are priced the same-crazy)!!

2 GHz $630 Clovertown Pairs vs. $418 Harpertown Pairs minus $212
2.66 GHz $1,488 Clovertown Pairs vs. $910 Harpertown Pairs minus $578
3 GHz $2,344 Clovertown Pairs vs. $$1,702 Harpertown Pairs minus $642
3.16 GHz $2,344 Harpertown Pairs same as 3GHz Clovertown Pairs

And this is simply Retail Boxes we are comparing.

So IF the lineup were based on maintaining the same processor cost per Mac Pro as now would have to be:

IF they wanted to sell a ton of them, the 2 GHz below bottom Total 16 GHz perhaps could sell for only $1,800. Although this might cut into iMac's territory, case could be made iMac is two 2.8GHz cores while most applications only use 1 or 2 not 4 or more.

2.5 GHz bottom Total 20 GHz $2,000
2.83 GHz middle Total 22.64 GHz $2,500
3.16 GHz top Total 25.28 GHz $3,000

Of course this comparison is only based on the cost of processors which is not going to be all the new costs. Confusing ain't it?

These are the Sunday November 11 prices of Harpertown on Retail Box Launch Day like at Fry's:

You Now Have My Attention

OK, I haven't paid alot of attention to this at all but you now have my attention.

I have the 2.66 Mac Pro, you guys are thinking that come November 11, we will allegedly be able to go to a Fry's (I don't have one here in Arkansas, so I will have to send money to MultiMedia) and purchase a pair of 3.16 GHz Harpertowns?

Plug & play, correct?

And the guesstimate for a pair of these 3.16 GHz Harpertowns will be how much?

The All 8 Core MP Harpertowns Are Going To Be Very Affordable

It looks to me like Apple can go with an all quad-core Harpertown Mac Pro line and keep the same prices they have now.
Win, win for Apple. Win, win for us!

2.5 GHz bottom Total 20 GHz $2,000
2.83 GHz middle Total 22.64 GHz $2,500
3.16 GHz top Total 25.28 GHz $3,000

Even though the prices are lower, I can not see Apple bringing the price of the Mac Pro down.
Apple likes making money.

I don't know if Harpertown will be plug & play with the current Mac Pro.
It's a 45nm processor as compared to the 65nm fabrication of Clovertowns and Woodcrests.
Even if you can put a Harpertown in your Mac Pro, getting to the processor sockets is not easy.

One other little problem...buying a retail boxed processor is not cheap.
For example, if you were to buy a 2.66GHz quad-core Clovertown for your Mac Pro, you will probably pay between $1500 to $1600 for two of them.

And the guesstimate for a pair of these 3.16 GHz Harpertowns will be how much?
Maybe I'm wrong but I'll guess $2200 for two 3.16Ghz Harpertowns.

$910 for BOTH 2.66GHz Harpertowns & $2,344 for BOTH 3.16GHz Harpertowns

Yes Plug & Play. Harpertown is just as compatible as Clovertown is - just cooler and faster.

Nope on your prices which I posted clearly and redundantly above. Did you miss that? You're over on one and under on the other.

$910 for BOTH 2.66GHz Harpertowns and $2,344 for BOTH 3.16GHz Harpertowns.

There are all kinds of detailed do-it-yourself videos and instructions all over the Mac web.

And these Harpertown processors are all 8-Cores? Am I correct? After 2 years I'm sure there's a high likelihood a lot of current Mac Pro owners will have self upgraded to 8 cores.

Alright everybody. I am going on hiatus until the update. I will be logging in for PMs for some deals I have going. But I won't be posting. I will observe though :D

Good luck to everybody who is waiting! See you soon! or later!

Wrong! You are addicted, you can't help yourself.

I know a bunch of us will be the first ones with CC on hand when the new MP comes out. I hope some retailers have good HD (10k, raptors :D) deals on black friday too. That would make it perfect way to end 2007 !

You're gong to be looking at close to $3,000, assuming frys have them. It's not a processor that is going to sell in the volumes the desktop ones do and retailers aren't going to be able to offer them at Intel's 1000 unit pricing. The X5365 (3GHz clovertown that the current Mac Pros use and costs $1,172, the same as the 3.16GHz will) came out monday and the cheapest price online from a vendor that claims to have them in stock is $1,400 each. They will probably remain around there for a fair while.
