If you are expecting a quad core MBP in the next revision then that would mean that it will not be updated for almost another year, before a notbook quad core is out.

probably Mac developer conference 2008 for the new quad MBP.

Regardless, i don't see the point in using 3/4 of your available memory banks when you can get 2x2GB cheaper than 4x1GB and keep the 2x512MB and get the "phantom speed boost." I just don't understand. You are killing your expandability if you got the 4x1 route.

Oh yeah, but I assumed that he got the two extra 512MB chips for free.. maybe I misread something

If, later, he wanted to upgrade and use those slots for something else, he could just ebay them (which he would have to do right now, otherwise)

upon searching here is an interesting and rather definitive answer (at least in the mind of the writer). http://www.maconintel.com/news.php?article=209

"One tip to take away from all this for the prospective Mac Pro user: The fastest Mac Pro memory configuration consists of four (4) FB-DIMMs. Not more. Not less."

Of course, that doesn't say you have to do it, but it would be fastest you can do. Of course more memory helps as well.
Of course I would never buy four 1GB sticks. The previous owner did that out of ignorance. :)

Someone else posted a link to this chart which is supposed to be the definitive way to place RAM in Mac Pros for all totals and all possible combinations of sticks.

Sorry MM, I thought you had purchased the 4x1GB! I guess you have no choice really.

Maybe you could do some benchmarks of your own for us and let us know the difference between quad channel and adding the 2x512 set. I am sure it would be appreciated by many!

The STREAM benchmark would be a good one to see what the real difference is - it tests main memory system performance.
http://www.cs.virginia.edu/stream/ (look for "Macintosh")

Of course application tests are also interesting, but depending on how well they fit in cache you might not see any effect from the main memory.

It would also be interesting to see 5 GiB, 4 GiB and 2 GiB tests (two 1 GiB FB-DIMMs in dual channel mode). In the 5GiB tests, it would be hard to control memory allocation to ensure that the dual-channel part is being used - by testing 2 GiB you'd be sure that all was dual channel.

TANGENT: Cool Mobile Quad Cores In Mid 2008?

TANGENT:
boy, its absolutely a BAD TIME TO BUY ANYTHING PRO now. Why ? because the next iteration of apple "Pro" (MP, MBP) would be a revolutionary rather than evolutionary.

*Below are all pure speculation*

a) The MP would probably all come equipped with 8 core with updated GPU. This should separate itself from the "consumer" iMac.

b) All the MBP would probably use the new Quad core2 extreme CPU.

To me (Final cut studio, photoshop, maya user), all of the above are significant.

The only thing is, nothing will be updated until the new "45" intel CPU is out and it maybe Mac World 2008 before we will see these new REVOLUTIONARY pro machines.
I think the 2.8GHz C2D Merom that is a new iMac option might be offered as an option in the 17" MBP
next. Does anyone know if that processor runs cool enough to work in the 17" MBP?

Really? In mid 2008 MBPs go Quad Core? That's news to me. Links?
probably Mac developer conference 2008 for the new quad MBP.
No kidding? Cool Mobile Quad Cores?

My Previously Owned System Arrives Tomorrow

Still holding my breath. Here are details of how who when where it came from. HINT: It's coming overnight from Miami FL. Ring a bell anyone?
Ding Ding Ding !
You are correct sir!. This purchase took 3 weeks to complete. Got it loaded with 23" ACD HD for $2,721 delivered.

5GB RAM - two 512 sticks it came with plus four 1GB sticks he added.
150GB Raptor 10k rpm boot drive
two 500GB SATA drives
the 250GB SATA drive that it came with
Bluetooth module
Retail copy of iLife '08

23" ACD HD

The MP was bought new June 12th. The ACD HD was bought last November. I don't understand the discrepancy in the purchase dates between the two parts of the system. I got this info from the Applecare department. I was able to transfer ownership from the previous owner to me by simply calling them and giving them the serial number of the MP along with the previous owner's email address and mine.

That's It !!

Just Delivered In Original Photographic Apple Boxes. Thank you uNext. You're the best. :)

Multimedia has a new Mac Pro in hand.

Apple updates the Mac Pro next Tuesday! :p

And we want pics MM. Especially with the Mac Pro integrated into into your "command center".

The Raptor is very fast. Look just to make it clear, I am going to buy the 8 core Harpertown in SS as soon as it ships. This is not a cop-out. I'm still waiting with every one else here. I just got a very good deal for a previously owned since June 12 - i.e. like new - Mac Pro LOADED with a 23" ACD HD for less than both cost empty on the refurb page and no sales tax. See above. Downloading the monster 304MB 10.4.10 Intel Combo Updater now.

Already put a 750GB Seagate PATA drive under the Sony Optical. will probably put the Sony outside and add another 750 PATA in there as well. Will be pulling all the small drives and putting in THREE 750 Seagate SATAs instead. So I have a spare pair of WD 500's now plus the little 250 WD that has an Apple Logo on it. :p

For the record: The loaded Mac Pro is quieter than the Quad G5 with the noisy ATI X1900GT for G5 Video Card that doesn't run properly when the nVidea 6600 card that came with the G5 is in there at the same time. Had to pull the nVidea card and drop back down to 2 screens before it would run right. Only way to have 4 displays with rotation support in the Quad G5 is to buy two ATI cards for $300 each after $50 rebate. Ouch!!

nVidea cards in Mac Pro support rotation including 1200 wide by 1920 high on the DELL 24". Love it!! May just buy another 7300GT so I can have 4 screens on my Mac Pro for a lot less money.

Man that Intel 10.4.10 Combo Update takes FOREVER to reboot - even on a Raptor. Anyone know why? It's still restarting after more than 10 minutes. Had to turn the power off then it rebooted normally.

I'm thinking November 13 if not the September 25 Paris Apple Expo Keynote.

What is going on? Should I purchase the MacPro right now, or wait?

Nothing. Just saying it would be Murphy's Law for a new Mac Pro to come out next Tuesday after MM just got his, that's all.

You should wait, and while you're waiting click the link in my sig :D

Congrats MM. And don't worry, we know it's just a stop-gap machine.

Yea I already told them off. As long as there is some type of announcement on or around September 25th, I don't care. If there is nothing, that's it, I buy.

Wow. I don't see how you could at that point. Not to make you wait, but at that point is nearly 14 months old.

Alright fine, I would wait. lol... It just sucks waiting. I have so many projects that need more power. But I guess if I been using this same POS for the last 7 years I think I could wait til then. Plus, the big project I have to do doesn't come til November 17th. So there best be an announcement by then.

Ok, I can't wait til November. This is ridiculous. I don't know what to do. We have the MacPros at work and they are just awesome. Windows works so fantastic on the machine and I'm dying to play my old games again.

I think I am just gonna get the 3ghz Octo-Core. I agree its wayyyyyyyyyy over priced, but for what I am doing with it, I could have it paid off fairly quickly. I mean, christ, I was thinking about getting a laptop to, so that could substitute that idea. ... That and I will have and Octo Core just like everyone else when the time comes, only you all will pay half of what I paid. lol.

Looking Like November 13 For Sure

According to intel Harpertown is due Nov 11th. Can't see any Mac Pro refresh until after this date.

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/342837.htm

Click on Boxed/Server Workstation products. I guess it applies to OEMs as the X5365 (3.0 GHz Clovertown) is checked for release on the 12th Aug which is what happened.
I'm going to have to put this post over on the SS thread as well guys. This makes my prediction of November 13 almost a certainty.

Great find jamoau! Thanks!

Thank God we finally have a date we can count on.

Hope you don't mind, MM, but I changed it just a little bit.
My chart shows people exactly which chips are Harpertown.
I guess it's obvious but what the heck.

No problem. Thanks for the clarification. Also note that November 11 is the day Intel begins shipping Harpertown in retail boxes which means Apple should have been in production for several weeks if not a month by then.
