Nehelam or whatever HERE WE COME!

Who care about penryn, it's only a stop gap. Lets go the whole hog, who care about the next MacPro update lets just all wait till 2H 2008 for 16 core MacPro's

sarcasm over.

I though they might have done there usual thing of "accidentaly" putting something somewhere on the site, but nevermind. Tuesday would be nice but i'm also beginning to think MacWorld will be the earliest we see an update.

I don't know that a fundamental architecture shift within a year is necessarily something to be sarcastic about. YMMV.

it's the plan - Tick Tock

I don't know that a fundamental architecture shift within a year is necessarily something to be sarcastic about. YMMV.

It's Intel's plan that no chip is "top dog" for more than a year.

Each year you'll see a shrink (Penryn about now) or a new architecture (Woodcrest last year/Nehalem next year).

Apple just needs to get on the same bandwagon, and upgrade systems as better parts come out. "Silent" upgrades are fine - you don't need a completely new model, just the chip upgrade is OK.

If they wait months to introduce stuff (like Clovertown in the Mac Pro or Santa Rosa in the MacBook) it just means that the "life" of the chip as "new" is shortened.

The MacBook upgrade is exactly how they shouldn't do things. Didn't it hurt to buy the GMA950 MacBook, knowing that Intel had the 3100 for about the same price?

ps: It's PCIe x16, not "16x". The "x" is before the number of lanes.
So it's x16 and not 16x. Semantics, sue me. ;) Didn't say they had to "officially support" the older machines (actually pretty sure I noted that they may just not support it), but I'm guessing it should work anyway. Drivers are a non issue with Macs. If it works in the new Mac Pros, and the hardware isn't that much different, the software should work fine. Unless Apple does something to cripple it, but they'd have to go out of their way to do so.

And I know for a fact that PC cards work fine in the current Mac Pro in Windows, I've done it myself.

The 3100 is Santa Rosa only. I don't know why they waited so long to move to SR though. That might have been price related.

Santa Rosa (Merom) processors and the chipsets are at the same price points as their Napa predecessors.

Well, now. But how much was Apple getting them for until recently? Might have been technical reasons too, as we now have people saying they're having issues with the video cards in the new MB. Could be driver issues. Who knows how long they've had these issues. Could be a lot of reasons though.

Maybe Apple just hates us and thinks it's funny to give us crappy video cards. :p

I don't expect it to be much different then this.

http://www.kodawarisan.com/macbook/macbook001.html

I don't see any real reason why Apple couldn't have made the change to Santa Rosa back in May other then Apple wanted to differentiate the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

They could have just used the video card, size, and CPU speed for that.
True , but this is Apple we are talking about here, they have ALWAYS used the overlapping release/upgrade method to make the newest hardware look most attractive. I'm sure the reason the Macbook upgrade took so long was Apple ordered x million of the previous Macbook motherboards and they were waiting for them to be sold. Then they started manufacturing the SR MB to meet the leopard release date. I'll bet the crossover wasnt perfect and we will see lots of previous model MB's dumped on sale/refurb shortly.
Sorry since this is a Mac Pro thread, new Mac Pro this wednesday!! :D

Penryn workstations announced

First Intel Penryn Based PCs Arrive... Apple to Follow?

Electronista reports that HP has upgraded their workstations with the new Intel Penryn Xeon processors. The new 45-nm Xeon 5200 (dual core) and Xeon 5400 (quad core) processors can be configured in dual-processor configurations (up to 8 cores total).

Yesterday, Lenovo announced their first machines powered by the Intel Xeon 5400 processors.

Intel will be officially launching the Penryn processors on November 12th. Apple is expected to adopt the new procesors in a revision to the Mac Pro. The new Mac Pro is rumored to be ready to launch as soon as enough Intel processors become available.

Why did you leave out the rather important statement: "These new Penryn based PCs, however, are not expected to ship until January 2008" ?

Although I do not find it to be that disheartening. Apple may have ordered the Penryns before HP did and hopefully stockpiled a few of them.

p.s. It will be a while before you are back here, I see you are very busy in the news discussion forum.

Well if for some reason apple can't ship them by the end of this week I am ordering an 2.66 refurb and that will hold me over until Nehalem!

To change the discussion a bit and create some more speculation....

What does everyone think the mid level model will be...2.8...3.0?? quad, octo?? It almost seems silly to wait into 1st Q. to upgrade from a 2.66 to a 2.8 BUT, if their there next week, well then i'm on on it like a fat kid on cake :D

I am thinking the sweet spot on this box, which now seems to be a thing of legend or myth, will be the 2.8 config. The speed and the price are just right to keep Apple happy with charging much more for the higher clock speeds. I also think that we will see a 320gb drive with an 8600GT and 2gb RAM standard. I know everyone says 8800 but come on, this is Apple they are going to totally underwhelm us with the base card, it is a fact, hell m aybe they will go as low as the 8400?

The reason I think we will only see a 320 is because Apple can the still charge way too much for a 500 and a 750. Or maybe I will be surprised and they will offer a 500 with two upgrade options to a 750 or 1TB.

We can only hope that Apple gets preferential treatment from Intel, as they did with the quad 3GHz chips.

We should all get together and pray that we see good GPUs...I see visions of the 8800GT as standard...<snaps out of dream>

I don't see there being a chance of having any 8800 as the base card (I doubt we will see an 8800 series at all), it's overkill and costly for those not needing the power. I would think Apple's priorities are powering 2560x1600 displays, low power consumpion and easy to cool passively rather than 3D performance.

I do agree with everything else and would be suprised if it were any different.

Oh please, Lord Blackadder - pardon my presumption as a lowly commoner at seeming to question the thoughts of one of the lords of the realm. Methinks, however, that thou art beholden to one of the "myths of the fanbois" - and though I quiver in the shade of thy majesty, I must speak the truth unto thou greatness, however great the cost to my soul and family.

It seems, mi lord, that:
  1. The kingdom of Apple didn't have an exclusive on the chips of the Third Giga - several 2nd tier and white box vendors were also offering those sacred chips for sale at about the same time as the Lord God Jobs bequeathed the Octo-core onto the people
  2. Those who visited the dark lords of the grey market were able to lay their hands upon the fabled chips of the Third Giga, even without visiting the Lord Jobs in the Temple of Cupertino
  3. The lords of the north (HP) and south (Dell) and other realms were also offered the divine chips of the Third Giga - but those lords, since they had not built their forts to withstand the nuclear fires of the G5, decided to wait for the second coming of the Third Giga in the form of the faster cooler 120 watt holy "G0 stepping".

Please, Lord Blackadder, have mercy on my soul - I am a loyal serf of your realm, but I fear that you have supped too often from the chalice of Kool-Aid from the realm of Cupertino. I humbly submit to your judgment - I'm only hoping that truth will prevail in your realm.

8 core 2.8.

But then again you have no real evidence to back this up.

The G0 stepping came far later than the Quad-Core 3.0Ghz processor Apple used but that enabled them to offer it early rather than later. 150 Watt TDP or not, does not mean it actually uses that much. And the Mac Pro can easily handle two processors spewing out 150 Watt.

Everytime I read your "explanation" of this I cringe my toes.

The fact remains that Apple was still the only one to offer this option. When Intel switched to the G0 stepping, so did Apple. I quite frankly don't see the problem.

But then again you have no real evidence to back this up.

Right, all I've done is talked to engineers and product managers for Intel and HP/Dell/IBM at IDF and other meetings (remember that the evening events at IDF had open bars, so you could get information that would never show up in a press release ;) ).

The story is consistent that the other vendors were offered the chip, but did not feel that it was worth the effort of modifying the thermal solutions in the servers for the extra 60 watts of heat, not when they knew the 120 watt G0 was coming soon.

The G0 stepping came far later than the Quad-Core 3.0Ghz processor Apple used....

Three months later for a speed jump of 12.5%. So for 6 months Apple's top systems had half the cores of the other vendors, and for three months Apple was 12.5% ahead in clock rate.

The fact remains that Apple was still the only one to offer this option. When Intel switched to the G0 stepping, so did Apple. I quite frankly don't see the problem.

There's nothing wrong with the older chip if you have a thermal solution that can handle it (and just because it typically doesn't use 150 watts doesn't mean that it's OK to ship it in a system that can't handle 150 watts). There's no "problem" with Apple offereing the CPU.

The "problem" is that many people take this one case as evidence that Apple has a special preferential relationship with Intel, and *always* gets the best chips before anyone else.

The simple chart below shows that Apple (the red line) has been behind the others (the blue line) for most of the Core 2 Xeon dual socket timeline. That's probably why your toes curl.

Note that "others" refers to IBM/HP/Dell - had I included 2nd tier and white box vendors in the "others" category - the blue line would have jumped to 24 GHz at the same time as Apple.

Let's just wait it out. The chips come out in a matter of days. Apple doesn't need "preferential" treatment at that point. Apple could and has possibly pulled some weight with Intel to buy up the chips as the report has said. Put even so, the chips will be out and at that point it is a matter of time.

So for 6 months Apple's top systems had half the cores of the other vendors, and for three months Apple was 12.5% ahead in clock rate.
Why do you knock them for not going with the extra cored machines that were far more expensive for, in most cases, slower machines, but discount their having slightly faster chips before anyone else? Especially since January is less than 3 months away in this case, so who's to say what comes next week. I'm not saying it's for sure they'll have them, but it certainly is possible given, right?
