Then Jobs had the big hissy fit with IDG, and pulled out of the east coast MacWorld, saying "it's not necessary".

That one gets me angry.
Apple wanted the east coast MacWorld held in New York.
The MacWorld people got a good convention contract in Boston and moved it there.
Apple said if you don't do it our way, we won't come. And they didn't.

"big hissy fit" is correct!

Personally, with the way things have been going, I'd say they're waiting for something.

Profound, yes? But wait, I'm not done. The 3870 x2 will start to be manufactured in early '08. You know, the 12 inch long, dual GPU, gig of RAM beast from ATI...

Could they be waiting for that? Could we see the single slot 8800, the 3870 x2, and an 8800 ULTRA in our Penryns? Only time* *dramatic pause* will tell...

*Frigging January...

Instead of waiting, Apple should change the sales model so that the set of BTO options changes for a model as better or cheaper alternatives are introduced.

The current practice of keeping one set of PCIe expansion card options for 16 months is insane.

Wait, they did add the $1000 RAID option, hmmmmm.

They should, absolutely. Will they? That's like asking, "Will Apple release the Pippin 2 at MacWorld this January?" And the answer is irrefutably... yes.

Or at least it will always be 'yes' for some poor soul who gathers hope at the slightest whisper. I just want the tanj Penryns to come out posthaste so that I can get a Nehalem before college. Looks grievously like THAT isn't going to happen, so I'll be stuck with a seven-month old Penryn...

My feelings at this point are best summed up by this quote:

"Dear Apple,
I want to give you money. Let me throw money at you."

I forget who said it (it was on this forum), so if you see it, let me know so that I can credit you.

Also, I just picked up two 24" monitors for when I get my Mac Pro, whatever processor it may have. Black Friday rocks.

I can not picture Apple waiting for a dual 3870.
Can you see Apple holding back the Mac Pro for a video card?

I think the odds are good that the bto consumer video card will be either the 8800 GT or the HD3870.
The edge goes to the HD3870. Just my opinion as I would much prefer the 8800 GT.
I suppose there is a chance (albeit a slim chance) of it being two 3850s in crossfire.
There is zero chance of it being an 8800 Ultra.
I don't think you will see an 8800 GTX either. It pains me to say that but the 8800 GTX is already out dated. If I could pick any card it would be the 8800 GTX.

There is a bright side to it being almost December...
nVidia is bringing out a 8800 GTS 640MB revision in December.
Some rumors are saying that it will be based on the G92 chip.
It remains to be seen but this bad boy may be powerful enough to compete with and maybe exceed the 8800 GTX in performance.
It will most certainly out perform the HD3870 and 8800 GT especially at high resolutions.
I doubt it will happen but wouldn't it be nice to have this 8800 GTS revision card as the Mac Pro's bto card?!

Q-Q-Q-Quote-bo Breaker!

Sorry, I meant that Apple's holding back video cards (made at least in the past year) for the new Mac Pros and denying owners of the current model the ability to upgrade. I just wrote it like that to mirror your statement. It was a little ambiguous, I take it...

Spoke to a pro and he said nothing (in MP line) since the first PowerMac G4 came out in January, its always been June.... so don't hold your breath.

So, I hafta buy 2 boxes in 6 mos to get my work done?

My prediction

Apple is waiting for peace in the Middle East before releasing a new mac pro... I've thought about it - this is the ONLY explanation;)

And why zero chance of an Ultra? Even as the highest BTO option?

The video cards will be:

1. something lame, like a 8600-range (included)
2) something good but slightly out-dated and not top-of-the-line, like a 8800GTS 640.
3) Some fancy workstation card like a Quarto or a FireGL. Not a gamer's card.

1 & 2 will be one Nvidia and one AMD.

Just my predictions.

8800Ultra

And why zero chance of an Ultra? Even as the highest BTO option?

It's already old technology.
It is power hungry.
It is expensive.
If Apple is charging $399 for a X1900 XT, just think what they would charge for an 8800Ultra.
I'd buy an 8800Ultra in a heartbeat if it were available but how many others would spend that kind of money?
ATI's HD3850 and HD3870 are very popular not because they are all that powerful but because they have an excellent performance/price ratio.
The 8800GT is already better than the 8800GTS 320MB card...people will more readily spend $260 for an 8800GT than $600 for an 8800Ultra.
In December nVidia is bringing out the GeForce 8800 GTS Rev.2. It will consume far less power than the 8800Ultra. It will be a lot cheaper.
Some people think it can be over-clocked to match the 8800Ultra's performance.

I'll repeat myself... I would love to have either the 8800GTX or 8800Ultra as bto but I seriously, seriously doubt it will happen.

The biggest reason IMO why no video card from this recent generation (the R600 and G80) was that they were all extremely hot, power hungry, large, and noisy. The recent revisions (RV670 and G92) changed a lot of that - much more power efficient, cooler, smaller, and less noisy.

IMO the near future I can see the 3850 or 3870 being used by Apple if they continue their contracts with AMD/ATI. FYI 3850 alone is nearly twice as fast as the X1950XTX in recent games so it's a damn good performer at a $179 price point for PC users.

I like the fact that January seems to be the most prevalent month.. :)
And it has been awhile since a January release..

Thx Aiden..

Dell has got xeons for its workstations they can deliver them within 15 days...

I think this is when we will see them from HP too. Though they have yet to put up prices.

$3900 for an 8 core 2.83GHz system from dell, with 1GB RAM, 80GB Hard drive and NVS 290 from Dell.

Proof of Apple's commitment to the Mac Pro

Pictures are worth 1000 words...
