The higher priced 8800GT models (US$309-319) appear to be shipping. There are US$269 - 289 ones but they're perpetually out of stock.

The 3850 and 3870 are on sale for $179 and $219 respectively online.

interesting that around here there is little price difference between the 8800gt and the 3870 (which makes the 3870 unattractive) while you prices where it makes a difference
both are sold out here already so i simply compared the best prices i could get from local retailers

i guess a lot of gouging is still going on on the 8800gt at least until christmas and suspect that in january we will get plenty of supplies
after all the new nvidia 9000 series based on the nv92 chip of the gt8800 is already on the horizon for what ? march or something like that

Fun to see the 3870 sell out vs. the 3850. It was very easy for me to buy a 3850 last week.

If ATi can keep the 3870 at $219 and the 8800GT continues to be gouged the 3870 and even the 3850 stand to sell well.

From what I can tell ATi put their bets on the 3850 and want consumers to buy two.

yeah the 3850 still totally makes any card in the 100-200 range totally obsolete especially on lower resolutions

SLI is a matter of taste but i suspect those they still use mroe power than single cards

and the drivers on nvidia side are still better ;)
At $179 the 3850 is a steal. I don't game at more then 1280 x 1024 as it is.

Crossfired 3850s can compete with a single 8800 GTX.

depends how expensive the other cards are ... if they are 300 and in limited supply you are right.. if they are 210-220 and available (like they will be sooner or later) they are not ;)

and for crossfire/SLi you still need a more expensive board and use up more power for the same performance (and you still have 2/3 of the RAm of a GTX ;) )

Only $360 for dual 3850. ;)

The 8800 GTX still runs around $500 stateside.

Of course you're going to need a full ATX board to do this and the support for it.

i know that but how much does a good crossfire board cost more vs. a single pcie board ? perhaps around 50-60 bucks more ?

the cheapest GTX can be had for as low as 420 ;) .. which then would use up less power

i would say currently it's pretty close again between ati and nvidia but it really just depends on the price you can get locally

personally i'll wait untill spring because it will eb after shopping season so obvious price drops and also new GPUs from nvidia and new desktop chips based on penryn from intel (february)

A lot depends on the motherboard and the Crossfire drivers but the performance is there when it works.

I've seen the 8800 GTX hit $450 but never as low as $420.

The Dual 3850s use just a little less power then the current 8800 GTX as well.

Steve Jobs watches this thread everyday, and now that it has gone past 2000 posts he feels pretty confident that it is time to let them out.

I know all of this because I have lost my mind waiting for theses f$%king boxes to appear. Man I should have bought the 2.66 4 months ago. :(

Hopefully the wait will be worth it.
The cpu will be more powerful and the gods' willing, the gpu will be much more powerful.

Now for the bad news.
I heard from a reliable source that SJ was going to bring out the new Mac Pro when this thread reached 2000 posts.
But now that it is over 2000 posts, he has decided to wait. j/k j/k j/k

Since I'm new to the forum here I was wondering what all the hubbub was about with MM getting banned. Not knowing who this person is but seeing his name posted all the time and knowing now that this thread was started by him I'm curious what happened that resulted in him getting banned?. (he actually answered one of my first posts to this forum now that I'm looking back through them - seems he was very helpful)

Those who know will not tell you here. Multi has begun posting on Appleinsider's forum. You should pay a visit.

And as a side note: There will be no new Mac Pros tomorrow. That's what a online "chat" apple employ told me. He said, " There is no news about the site being down." So people, go to sleep and wake up when MWSF arrives.

Nothing interesting I guess, he was in danger of boring people to death with his DVD-ripping/encoding talk quite frankly...

Please stick to the nature of the thread.

I am still hoping that the base model will consist of 2 x 2.83Ghz Harpertowns for 8-core lovin', 2GB of ram and a vastly better graphic card than what is currently offered.

That's so close to its MSRP of $200 - $250 ...
It's a very popular item but nVidia didn't produce it in quantity. They really want you to buy the 8800 GTS.

The 256MB version of the 8800GT is set to hit at the end of this month and it should fall in around the price point of the ATi 3870.

But in the same quantity as the Geforce 8800GT 512MB it will largely be unavailable. Not to mention by December the 3rd the new Geforce 8800GTS 512MB should become (un)available. All use the same chip (G92) but it would appear TSMC is at their wafer limit, so I would except MRSP to be reached some time in the new year (2008).

Not to favor AMD but they enjoy a die size and manufacturing process advantage here with the RV670. Even though it may not reach the same performance as the Geforce 8800GT it is, at least, available and selling for MSRP.

I wonder who over in nVidia decided to produce such low quantities of the 8800GT before the revised 8800GTS was launched. People want to SLI the 8800GT and they're being pushed to the 8800GTS.

ATi does hold the advantage here since many more 38xx Series can be produced from a wafer. Like I said they placed their bets on the 3850 in Crossfire and then the 3870 being priced lower relative to performance when compared to the 8800GT.

At $179 the 3850 has no current competition from other video cards.

.

As far as i know it's not illegal to backup a dvd you own nor is it illegal to discuss how to do it - if that's what you mean.
