A little over a week ago, I bought a 2007 MacBook, which is in very good shape. I upgraded the RAM and bought a new battery for it. I bought the battery new, installed it, and let it fully charge. Today, I noticed the "Battery not charging" message up top on my screen. I've tried re-setting it, resetting the SMC and so far no dice. Now the battery has completely drained and will not charge. The lights on the battery no longer shine or doing anything when I press the button. Its completely dead.

What's more likely? A defective battery or a charging port gone bad? I think its the battery as it fully charged the very day I got it with no problems. But how can a brand new battery go bad just 2 days after using it?

Any suggestions besides getting a new battery, which is probably what I'm going to have to do anyway....?

was it an aftermarket battery? those things are very hit or miss. you'll probably have to get a new battery, as there's not much you can do otherwise.

It was a new "replacement" battery. Seemed to work just fine after installation. Charged up to 100% but today I saw the "not charging" message and it went downhill from there. I did manage to get it to charge back up to 38% but it would go no further. Then it drained completely. Only had 6 cycles on it per the System Report.

sounds like an aftermarket battery. those are known to be volatile, and there are some instances where they cause serious damage to your computer. very doubtful it's the magsafe board (but you could take it in to an apple store to look at it). where did you buy it, and did it have warranty?

I bought it off eBay. It had a return so that's what I'm doing. Going to try another vendor. I know its not the magsafe board or the adapter as it continues to work as it should. I think its just a bad battery that went bad shortly after taking a full charge.

UPDATE. Some interesting results after downloading this. First of all, it identified the power adapter I am using as 85 watts when its clearly marked at 60 watts. So, knowing that, I try another 60 watt power adapter and lo and behold, the battery starts charging. So why would an 85 watt power adapter be labeled as 60 watts?

did you also buy the adapter off of eBay?
and I also use an 85W adapter with my 2007 MacBook, and it charges fine... the charger itself might be faulty.
