Oh, ok, I understand now what you're saying. Funny, I was using SMC Fan Control to attempt to speed the fans up and cool it down. It wouldn't control the power supply fan, none at all. Mac's Fan Control sped it right up and slowed it down, weird. It also sped up and slowed down the other fans quicker than SMC did... So the question remains, what's wrong with this thing for it to just flip off and shove the fans into high gear? The last several replies I've been using it and no problem so far.

I reset both, twice. I also had El Capitan installed, thought maybe that was the problem so I went back to Yosemite, same problem.

I need to drive an entirely different hard drive, haven't done that yet but I will. I just pooped the bed again and won't boot. Hmm...

If the PSU is dropping one voltage rail, it would cause a hard lock, and the motherboard would still be powered, which would set fans in panic mode and kill video. Could be bad PSU.

Tried running the machine with only one or the other RAM carrier card?

It just flipped out so I'm trying a different hard drive. I haven't tried one or the other riser cards. I have tried several different ram combos though.

Can you be more specific with "Wont boot?" No startup chime? No boot screen after chime? Stays on Apple logo?

Well it'll chime. I don't get a grey apple screen cause I'm using a PC card and not a Mac card or a flashed card. It just sits there, forever, doing nothing. I just swapped hard drives and did a fresh install (again) of OS X Yosemite. Typing from that now, so we'll see what happens with a totally different hard drive. Hopefully it's just a hard drive problem but I'm still leaning towards logic board or like you said, power supply. I'd like to be able to pin point it much better or closer though before I drop more money into this thing.

I basically bought the parts separate, I had this 2008 case and decided to build a real Pro in it instead of a hack. So I sourced a place to buy the original parts from fairly cheap and went to work. It has been working fine up until a few weeks ago, this problem just began then. I know the hard drive I decided to use had some errors or something before, so maybe that's the culprit. I'll know in a few hours or a day or so.

Thanks!

Ok, I got the Mac's Fan Control, attached the capture of what it says my temps are. Somewhat different from what Temperature Gauge says...

I've had it up and running since I posted the captures earlier. This Mac is outside in my HAM shack, so it doesn't see constant use. Just came outside and it's still up and running, the screen had been put to sleep, woke it up and it's still up and running. Odd.

Yes, the RAM has the Apple heatsinks on them. I've tried the thermal paste both ways, very little and too much. I'll tear it back down and redo it for the forth time, using much less this time. See if it'll boot back up afterwards and see what the temps are. Thanks!

I am not familiar with the 3,1, but what catching my eye in your screen capture is the MCP temperature. That's looks like the north bridge to me, and obviously the heat on the chip cannot effectively transfer to the heatsink.

Well I swapped hard drives and it ran for awhile and then flipped out again. I'll look into the northbridge, I hadn't really paid it any attention until you mentioned it.

If it's not a heat issue, I guess I'll start with a power supply and from there.
