2008 MLB Season

Man, the Rockies are not having much luck now.

This is the camel's nose under the tent for turning our graceful, historic game into a technology-dependent exercise, a concept I dislike with every fiber of my baseball-loving being. What amazes me most about this discussion is the degree to which some baseball fans (resisting the urge to put the word in quotes) think the game needs to be "improved." Bah, I say to that. Bah!
Well, why not just go back to the Knickerbocker rules? Or how about the dead-ball era, because they changed the game for more offense (hey, just like the DH!).
And to repeat, video umpires would not necessarily be more "right" than real umpires. They are simply using different evidence to make a judgement, evidence which can be just as ambiguous as what an umpire sees on the field. Every one of us has seen multiple instant replays from multiple angles and still can't say with total certainty, for example, whether or not a ball hit a foul poll. This is a game, not a science.

Fine then. Let's give the umps binoculars so they can see where the ball hits better.

The Mets have lost 7 of the last 8. Getting painful.

yea.:p

and the braves beat webb, 7-3 to split with the d'backs. looks like we're finally getting hot...now a dreaded road trip.

for the record, the rays, a team i like watching, have the best record in baseball. (this is my 5th season watching rays games, and i enjoy watching their games.) also, the marlins look more real. i trust the rays more in making the playoffs, i think the marlins fade.

JD Drew hit a grand slam in the 2nd inning :D

Currently 5-3 Sox in the 5th.

I'm shocked. Is J.D. Drew actually showing emotion on the field?

That pic of Drew was from when he hit his grand slam off Cleveland in Game 6 last October. That was his limit of emotion for the year..Had he not shown emotion then, they would have had doctors checking for a pulse for sure....

and you wonder why nobody likes him. he sounds like a good person off the field, but his work ethic (or lack of it) and things like this make him very hard to like.

Having watched him play in LA, I don't think he lacks work ethic. It's just his demeanor. He always looks kind of bored, which doesn't mean he actually is. The other issue is the number of pitches he takes. Fans tend to hate all the walks, but this does represent a good knowledge of the strike zone, and reflects in his OBP. I wasn't a big JD Drew fan when he played in LA, but I do think he gets dinged unfairly for having such a placid personality.

Everybody on the Red Sox takes a ton of pitches. That's what they do. The fans don't care about that. He pretty much had big shoes to fill personality-wise replacing Trot Nixon, who was a fan favorite. Drew is pretty much the polar opposite of Trot Nixon. But coming in and being absolutely horrible didn't help either.

Like I said, I'm not a big JD Drew fan so I'm not promoting his abilities, but of course every armchair manager thinks they know exactly what's wrong with a player whenever they go into a slump. We also know how ruthless the fans can be in Boston.

He appears to be doing better this year. That said, he's been here a year and I haven't yet heard him speak. It's strange how he just blends into the lineup... like you totally forget he exists.

And with that one swing in Game 6,everybody went from hating him to loving him in an instant. Esp the local media...
Watching Cubs/Dodgers on ESPN..Dear God,Chris Berman goes on and on...

So is Willie fired yet?

No, and I'm one of the few who doesn't think he should be. Omar Minaya, yes.

They both have their flaws, and if the Mets don't make it to the postseason I would support not bringing back Willie, but until they are actually mathematically out of that you won't see me supporting canning him.

Matsuzaka leaves game with shoulder fatigue

SEATTLE - While everyone thought Daisuke Matsuzaka had back pain or hip pain, it was revealed after the game that he has shoulder fatigue.

Manager Terry Francona said he didn't know whether Matsuzaka would miss his next start, but it sure looks like it. The righthander said he experienced something similar in his second or third year in Japan and pitched through it but then said he paid the price in his next start.

Matsuzaka said he elected to come out, but it appears Francona made the decision for him after the pitcher threw two warmup tosses before the fifth inning.

Francona said he knew nothing about Matsuzaka having back or hip pain, and Matsuzaka spoke about his shoulder and not his back.

Matsuzaka said he felt discomfort as he worked through the fourth inning. The Sox were aware he wasn't feeling right and kept an eye on it.
