I agree with most of your choices but Green...I believe most WC squads take 3 goalkeepers...
I believe there is actually a rule in place that states three players in the final 23 must be designated goalkeepers.

25 years since the Bradford City fire, and Heysel on 29 May.
Indeed.

You can say that Bradford hasn't ingrained itself into the national consciousness in the same way that Hillsborough has – for a variety of reasons – but the tragedy that happened there can't be understated, nor should it be forgotten.

56 people went to a football match and didn't come home, many more were horrifically injured. You just can't get your head around it, really.

That Bradford fire was a real tragedy, especially because so many people escaped the immediate danger of the fire, only to be overcome by smoke trying to get out. And it happened shockingly fast. Very sad indeed.

Stadium disasters are fairly rare in the US, I can't remember any major stampedes, collapsed stands or fires off the top of my head that happened in my lifetime. Very very few, if any, American stadia have large standing sections, which may be a factor.

Agreed but have you looked at their injury list LB?

True, but they should be fit to play. And even without those (admittedly huge) players, Spain has one of the deepest squads in the world.

Injury scare for England's Brave John Terry today, a suspected metatarsal injury sustained in training – not, as one would have guessed, following a fall climbing out of someone's wife's bedroom window.

Chelsea say he's checked out fine though and should even be okay for Saturday's FA Cup Final, but it's a timely indicator of the injury fear that tends to grip the media and fans at this point of a tournament season...

Gutted, so close...
Think they missed Zamora but still did well, although I'd say Athletico did shade it

Yup.. :(

EDIT:
BTW, I was @ the Emirates last Sunday to see us against Fulham. I liked the away supporters! They joined us nicely in "Stand up if you hate Tottenham", en we joined them in "Stand up if you hate Chelsea" :)

Forlan again! He keeps popping up to spoil the party. Considering all the firepower Athletico have on tap, they I was expecting them to win, even though I had hoped Fulham could win it.

Still, a great run for Fulham. Perhaps next season, with a few less injuries, they can make another run.

What the heck did the England 2018 bid people put into their "bid book" to make it over 1,700 pages long? Maybe they hollowed it out and put a nice little gourmet lunch in there for Sepp.

Oh, and Sepp Blatter is a doofus. Just had to add that in case anyone forgot...

I can see how it ended up that length, in fairness – they have to go into a ridiculous amount of detail.

Each of the Stadiums will be described in intricate detail, with diagrams of every floor they hold and how the space will be used. This will be supported by maps and detail of each proposed host city showing transport infrastructure at a local and regional level, accommodation, media hubs, tourist activities for non-match days, and other stuff besides.

Furthermore, each host city has to be supported by a number of team bases and training camps and each of these then require their own description of facilities and transport links, as well as detailed site plans showing training pitches, team accommodation, medical and media centres, security arrangements, and so forth.

Then there are the 'fan fest' sites, places where supporters not actually attending the sites can gather and watch the match on big screens, buy merchandise, and generally have a splendid time of it. each site needs to be outlined in detail, once again supported by maps showing how the space will be used, transport links, and so forth.

That's even before we get onto very detailed information on security, regional and national politics, and details on the 'legacy' benefits that hosting the tournament would bestow upon the nation. The role of football in each host city also needs to be outlined in detail, from Sunday league and youth football all the way up to the professional clubs.

Needless to say too, finance is an important factor and FIFA need to know how much they might make out of the tournament. :p

The detail needed in these documents really is mindboggling, and the length of the bid book really doesn't surprise me in all honesty. I wouldn't mind having a look at it myself.

Well, that goes without saying...

Not to mention they have to detail which FIFA officials get paid-off under the table, how much, when, and how the money will be delivered :D.

Well, I've just arrived in Austria, I think England get here tomorrow. I'm 15 minutes away from base camp. Can't wait to go down there and watch them train :D

Looks like the English media are the ones plotting to overthrow England's WC bid. If they wanted to do that, why don't they just start taping Prince Philip? 5 minutes of conversation with him and he'd get England banned from the WC forever. :D

'Highlights' of the bid book available here (although missing all the appendixes with the juicy detail.)

But yet again I can't believe the mentality of Fleet St editors. 'Hang on, if we publish this, we could jeopardise the world cup bid and all the newspapers we could sell if successful. '

Assuming we qualify, English papers will sell copies regardless of where the World Cup is staged – however, a failed bid gives plenty of opportunity for additional headlines.

All that money wasted, the useless suits at the FA, Johnny Foreigner conspiring against us yet again... nothing sells papers like bad news and the finger pointing that follows it.

Interesting to look through the link you posted... in particular, I'm delighted to see from the venue map that Sheffield appears to have moved from South Yorkshire to the East Riding. Just think! All those matches right on my doorstep.

My money's on Russia for the European pick for 2018/2022.
