I like the subtle suggestion that you can kick the ball with the power of a professional. If we ever put a MacRumors XI together we'll stick you up front. :D ;)

<sticks hand up> I'll do left back, since my left foot is the favored one, and I can't run very much. But I do get a red mist when on the pitch, so I'll get stuck in. ;)

Call me old fashioned, but I think England matches – at the very least competitive ones – should be free to view. The same goes for Scotland and Wales with their respective broadcasters.

Football's the national sport, and it seems wrong that folk can't watch the national side without forking out to watch it online. We're all internet savvy, but there'll be plenty of people who might want to watch but don't have a computer/a broadband connection/a clue about any of that internet business, and they're stuffed if they want to watch it.
Indeed, what a crock! It's almost law that as a bloke, a weekend England game is the excuse you need ot get out the house, meet up with the lads and watch the match down the pub :)
As for my grandad, he's an ex-pro footballer and enjoys watching it on TV. However, at 92 he's probably "a bit old for all this t'internet malarky"

If I recall correctly, the ball used in the Euro 2008 championship was criticized for being very lively, leading to more goals off set pieces and long distance goals.

I've never got to kick around a ball of that quality, I'm used to cheap balls that fly like lumps of lead. I'm thinking about getting my brother an Adidas Teamgeist II MLS game ball for Christmas (partially so I can kick it around too!). ;)

Like his Lordship I've never played with the footballs you go on to mention – and even if I had, I don't possess anything like the skills to do things of high aceness with them. I struggle to kick a ball in a straight line. I'm proper rubbish, me.

But every time a new ball is introduced there are complaints from 'keepers about how the flight is harder to judge, that they move faster, and all that. Obviously, 'keepers will have a good moan about anything given the chance but anything that makes a football faster and its path more unpredictable isn't going to make their job any easier I suppose.

I've played with these "new" balls and while I can't hit them for **** others that I play with can and they are phenomenal. When hit/struck well/correctly they knuckle, bob, and absolutely fly. I keep a bit and one the most embarrassing goals I've ever given up was with one of those balls from just over 20 yds out or so. It was a screamer coming right at me. I was in pretty good position at the start for the first 10 yds or so then it curved downed to my left and started to knuckle and there was nothing I could do as it bent and bobbed by me. ANdit bent away and low a lot.

Out of interest, who did Grandpa Fizzy play for, and in what position?

He played for Wednesday, but never made the first team, but mostly for Port Vale. He also played for the Army during WW2. His career ended while playing for Port Vale when a friend of his tackled him and broke his ankle. In those days, it was a career ending injury. He played as a winger I seem to remember

Great stuff – not the career ending injury bit though, obviously.

Meanwhile, in a bit of news many will having been anticipating since the takeover, Notts County have sacked manager Ian McParland. They could do a lot worse than getting the newly available Peter Taylor in...

That really put's Eduardo's recovery into perspective. In your grandfather's day, Eduardo would have probably lost his leg and possibly even his life. Instead, he's back on the pitch, diving his way through the Champion's League. ;)

I just heard the news. :(

According to the latest report, Davies sufferered a ruptured bladder, fractured elbow, facial fractures and a fractured right tibia and fibula.

He's just come out of surgery on his leg and the injuries are thankfully not life threatening.

"Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation," said U.S. Soccer physician Dr. Dan Kalbac. "Due to Charlie’s fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved."

I'm sure I speak for the all USA supporters and football fans as a whole by saying our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the young lady who lost her life. A terrible tragedy for everyone.

What happened with Scotland? Beaten by Japan 2-0... Only a friendly I guess.

It was always going to be an odd one... with the early end of our World Cup group (and our failure to qualify) we don't have a competitive international match until October 2010!!! But with the Old Firm still involved in Europe there were about a team full of call-offs due to injuries so it was really a 'B' team. I didn't watch the match (which was live on domestic TV - sorry England) but I believe it was 0-0 until 86 minutes. I was surprised Japan's ranking was 10 lower than Scotland’s, thought they were much better than that.

USA win a thriller 3-2 away in Honduras! That seals qualification to World Cup 2010!!!! :D

Congratulations! Looking for a team to play in a friendly as a warm up???:D

Wow. Being a USA fan right now is a real emotional rollercoaster!

USA, playing with 10 men for the last 10+ minutes just scored at 94:45 (out of 4 minutes of stoppage ;) ) to manage a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against Costa Rica with all sorts of World Cup implications.

A very, very gutsy performance from USA after going down early 2-0 in the match against a very motivated Costa Rican side. After the big win in Honduras and Charlie Davies' injury I expected USA to be motivated and push for a win, and to be fair we created a lot of chances but our finishing just was not there tonight. Very frustrating. My biggest criticism is shaky defending. Our wing backs looked decent going forward, but the whole back four looked slow in defense, giving Costa Rica far too much time and space on the ball. Onyewu looked very rusty....he's riding the bench too much at AC Milan, and it's hurting his match fitness. I was excited about the move when it happened, but frankly for USA it would have been better for him to be back at Standard Liege where he was starting.

Jozy Altidore (friend and roomate of the injured Davies) clearly wanted to score a goal badly for his hospitalized teammate; for much of the match he was almost wild, sprinting after every ball and taking on three or four defenders at once. He showed pace and strength but not enough composure. His efforts were rewarded with an early yellow. I thought his finishing was a little wild as well -maybe a rush of blood to the head of what is still a young player. Like Onyewu, he's not starting regularly so match fitness may be an issue - physically he's there but mentally off a bit (but maybe we can give him a pass here because of Davies). To be fair to Altidore, he pushed hard the entire match and created some chances with good passes and deft touches that should have led to goals. All in all, he had a good showing.

Oguchi Onyewu went down with what appears a major injury towards the end of the match (EDIT: very bad news, it's a torn knee ligament, he'll be out for several months), so USA were left with 10 men searching for an equalizer (against a Costa Rican side who had emphatically parked the bus), and we got it literally at the death, with Jonathan Bornstein heading in Robbie Rogers' corner. Oh, what a finish!

Jose Torres looked very sharp on the ball once again. Why Bradley doesn't rate him is way beyond me. He is rather small, and I know Bradley prefers bigger players, but we need his creativity and he is getting regular playing time at Pachuca.

Gotta give a shout out to Columbus Crew's Robbie Rogers (who pulled on the No. 9 shirt vacated by Davies), who was subbed in in the second half and almost got an assist with his first touch, and looked dangerous for most of the rest of the match. He and Torres shared corner kick duties, and I believe it was was his delivery that Bornstein headed home for the equalizer. I think he has a bright future with USA.

The result means USA top CONCACAF in WC qualifying, and, heartbreakingly for Costa Rica, they will now have to face Uruguay in a two-legged playoff for a spot in the finals. Incidentally, Costa Rica's manager and assistant manager were both sent off later on, so I assume they will be serving a touchline ban for their critical match against Uruguay.

All in all, it's a mixed bag. USA tops the group and preserves an undefeated home record in qualifying, but we've just lost two key players to major injuries. Davies will pretty much certainly be out until after the World Cup (and one hopes that it will be no worse than that) and Onywu will miss much of the remaining Serie A season, where he was frustratingly riding the bench anyway. Just more proof (as if we needed it) that USA still have much work left to do in their World Cup campaign.

From what I have seen of Japan they are a decent side. They are small physically but look good with the ball on the ground and have pace.

We've lined up a fixture with Denmark already but I'm sure we'll play other sides too...just give us a ring!

Highlight of the England game, David Beckham's beard!
We really didn't know what to make of that at Jaffa Towers. I reckon he's trying to model himself on Ian Ashbee, who isn't averse to sporting a bit of a beard.

I suspect the facial fuzz is the real reason Steve Bruce awarded Beckham the Man of the Match award, a decision that a bemused Capello decribed as 'like Obama winning the Nobel Prize'. :p

It certainly was a strange one!
While watching it in the pub, it was a little hard to assess individual performances, and no one player really stood out (apart from the beard, obviously), but personally I'd have given it to Crouch, who played a full 90 mins and worked quite hard (not to mention scored 2 goals)

How does Becks get man of the match after Crouchy scores two goals and Beckham fails to score?

I wonder if Crouch will make the 23 man roster for South Africa.

Meanwhile, Maradona's reaction to his (barely) successful qualifying campaign definitely tops Joe F. Kinnear's tirade from last season. Absolutely classic! :D

I really cannot see Maradona leading Argentina come next summer. The man is a train wreck. Now that Argentina have qualified I would think that he will be removed or at the least will become the puppet of other staff placed near him.

Meanwhile, AC Milan are asking US Soccer to pay Oguchi Onyewu's wages during the period he recovers from his torn ligament. I say get stuffed! You weren't playing him, so you won't notice anyway!

the U.S. match was a thriller... i guess... they seemed no to care so much in the first half. CR had everything to lose and they played like the wanted it more. i wasn't impressed with the 1st 45 for sure. hope gooch will be well soon.

Howard and Altidore worked very hard in the first half - the rest of the team looked like they struggled to deal with Costa Rica's attack and possession football. We still made a few good chances though.

In the second half we threw the kitchen sink at them.

So FIFA decided at the last minute to seed the playoff matches for Europe's final 4 World Cup places. The 4 teams with the highest FIFA rankings will be seeded and avoid each other. I have no problem with seeding, my problem is that this was decided at the last minute, rather than before qualifying began. Sounds like FIFA were worried some of the big boys would be drawn against each other and thus one of them wouldn't make the world cup.

Anyway, here's the seedings:

Seeded teams:
FRANCE
RUSSIA
PORTUGAL
GREECE

Unseeded teams:
Ukraine
Republic of Ireland
Bosnia-Hercegovnia
Slovenia

I'd think that Ireland would be hoping for Greece. Also, I'd love a Russia vs Ukraine matchup.

No Gerrard, no Torres this weekend. This is Liverpool's chance to prove they don't completely rely on them, and a big chance for players like Lucas, Babel, Voronin and Benayoun to truly show their stuff.

I have to admit I'm worried.

So FIFA decided at the last minute to seed the playoff matches for Europe's final 4 World Cup places.

I don't like that they did it at the last minute either. I think they were just afraid of the possibility of France getting drawn against Russia and missing the finals. Most people might say Greece is the weakest seeded team, but I think they are tougher to break down than Portugal, though Portugal have a menacing attack.

Oh, and Go Slovenia!!! (seeing as I'm half Slovenian) :)

I'm appalled anyone would even suggest that FIFA or UEFA might try and set things up to make the path for the 'bigger' teams as easy as possible. Shame on you. ;)

It's ridiculous, but unsurprising. I'm not in favour of seeding systems in any case, but introducing one at this late stage smacks of favouritism on the part of the organisers. The eight teams in the play-offs all qualified by fulfilling the same criteria – they finished as runners up in their respective groups – so seeding seems silly, if it must be the case then why not seed the teams based on their performances in the qualifiers rather than the system that will be used, the fundamentally flawed FIFA World Rankings?

Unlikely as it is, I'd love it if we see four upsets and the 'little' countries all get through. That'd teach FIFA. :p

In particular though, I'd like to see Ireland make it through – given that they've got three City players likely to make the squad if they make it to South Africa. In fact, we may well have representatives at next year's Finals whether Ireland make it or not, which is a bit of a new experience – I don't think we've ever actually had any players ever go to a World Cup. In 2006 there was Angola's Rui Marques who had a spell on loan with us before the tournament, but he'd returned to Leeds United prior to flying out to Germany. However, one of the TV companies wrongly captioned him as being a Hull City player, so that's as close as we've ever got!

Having players go off to major international tournaments will be routine stuff to supporters of the 'bigger' clubs, but it'll be a novelty for us and I for one will be proud to see some of our players out in South Africa. In our current squad, we have current or recent internationals representing the already qualified United States, Netherlands and Australia, as well as a number of countries who are still in with a chance of qualification – the aforementioned Ireland, Algeria, Gabon and Nigeria. Hopefully at least some of those will advance to South Africa. :)

United wins, Chelsea and Liverpool lose. What a great day!

Though I have absolutely no idea why Sunderland's goal against Liverpool was allowed. Someone, most likely a Liverpool away fan, threw a Liverpool logo'ed balloon on the pitch, which settled right in front of Liverpool's goal. Darren Bent struck a shot that looked like it was headed straight for Reina, until it struck the balloon and deflected slightly to Reina's left. Unfortunately for Reina, he reacted towards the wrong ball!

<grumbles>.

All I'm going to hear for the next week are pundits with Mancunian dialects gleefully explaining how Liverpool, supposedly a team of XI players, is in fact a team of Gerrard and Torres and without them we will never win so much as a match.....cue up the trite, lazy journalism!

I fully expect for Columbus to win tonight and make me forget about the Liverpool match. EDIT: And Columbus loses to DC United to make this a rather forgettable weekend for me....sheesh. We are still looking good overall but not scoring enough goals at the moment.

Nah, Gerrard hasn't been that influential this season :p

Sorry, but I do have to agree, I don't see a good backup to Torres.

Think you're going to have to put up with it for a while longer. Thing is, Liverpool had the best chance of winning the title in a long time, so coming so close is obviously news and you know what journalists are like.
