First generation Boxster...

And besides, old Boxster's dont count. Look at the current Carreras. The reliability is very good.

Yeah, first-generation...sure, it's no big deal that an engine they were selling within the past 10 years would catastrophically fail. Nah, that doesn't count--just ask the people who got stuck with them. ;)

[snip]
The Civic I'll get has about 100,000 miles on it. We're the only owners (my parents) of the car. My dad bought it brand new in 02 for $16,000 about.
that sounds like me, but my dad got it on 01 and for $13, and now has 120,000.
i also have to buy it from him.

Anyone know how much a 2001 Civic Sedan LX, Manual trany, with 120,000 miles is worth?
Great condition. buying from my father so i know it hasnt been in a crash, but the thing has been broken into with a screwdriver on the doorhandle.

If you get any enjoyment out of cars whatsoever (which I assume, as you've enjoyed two BMW's), go with the Jetta.

European cars tend to be better thought out than their american/japanese/australian counterparts. And the Jetta will definitely be better to drive ;)

I have a 20yr old BMW, and it still drives better than my parents near new Corolla.

As for reliability, from what I've seen, european cars aren't THAT much more expensive to maintain if/when things go wrong...set aside 5-10% aside and you'll be sweet:)

Civics also seem to be the #1 car for people who want to "pimp" their car yet have no economic needs to buy a nicer car, which is good definition for lame.

But Civics are still good cars, so I'd choose the Honda. :p

Jetta. Black. Maybe TDI.

Everyone and their brother has a Civic. And compared to the Jetta, the Civic looks cheap.

I've been in both (not back-to-back) and the Jetta fells much nicer. It's the kind of car that you don't let get crapped up.

We have a 2008 Civic EX 4 Door. It's a great car, even with my flooring the gas all the time, we still manage to get 36 mpg on almost every fill up.

I personally drive an Acura RSX right now, 05 model, not even 4 years old, 70k miles no problems or anything else except my interior light burned out once.

My friend bought an 06 GTi and his transmission gave out... twice.. car's not even 10k miles yet.. =\

everyone i have know with recent VW's have had a plethora of problems.
i have a Civic. and has 120,000 on it and runs perfectly.;)

I know a guy who had a jetta about 2-3 years ago, it had a horrible amount of problems, and it cost him a bundle. They may have changed since then, but I know someone who had a 89 civic that they sold 3 years ago... it still runs to this day (now, the body is a rust bucket, but that was before cars were coated to last longer).

I have a job and I also save money...?

That's why I asked if you were an older returning student, or if you just had some secret access to wealth as a younger student moving directly from your undergraduate into graduate school. I'm in the latter situation and can't even afford a new radiator for my car.
