it should be clear from all the related posts in this forum that not everyone needs or will notice a fast CPU.

if me and Einstein take a 1st grade math test, we'll probably finish around the same time. if you ask us to invent general relativity, one of us will finish a lot quicker.

browsing the web is the 1st grade math test. audio/video editing is harder. unless you're doing something processor intensive, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW OR CARE WHAT CPU YOU HAVE.

if your machine works for you, why upgrade? for the stress of reselling?

Love the analogy :D

EXACTLY, well said

I went from a 2010 base with 4G ram to a 2011 base and its definitely faster day to day. I am not sure how anybody can say its not, as its VERY obvious. I am not a heavy user but everything from word, mail and safari respond quicker.

The new keyboard is nice but not a big deal. Its an overall better machine. The upgrade cost me only a few hundred bux as I sold my old one for a lot and now I have a new one year warranty and a new toy :) So I am happy.

This is just the thread I have been looking for. I am pretty sure now that I will keep my 2010 MBA and upgrade the hard drive from the 128 to the OWC 360 as storage space is my biggest issue.

It also bears mentioning that you have to have more income than the expenses you are trying to deduct. you can't do a $400 website and write off a $1500 computer.

So....

Anyone here gone from a 2010 13in MBA to the 2011 13in MBA?

I have the 256GB 2.13/4GB and thinking of going to the 128GB 1.7/4GB.

I guess my main question is, with the new processor, is it noticeably faster?

Thanks

I think we are at a point in time where processor speed doesn't matter for MOST tasks an average and even advanced user.

You are not going to be gaming a whole lot on the Air, you'd rather get a different machine for that. You are not going to work with FCP X professionally and get the Air, you'd get something else. For most other tasks, pretty much every dual core processor and above is sufficient.

At most, the vast majority of people would notice a faster encoding of videos while using iMovie, for example. To me, it doesn't matter. I can wait 10-15 minutes longer to encode a vacation video and upload it to YouTube. I don't do 25 videos a day where the time savings could really make a difference.

To 99%+ of people a better processor makes very, very little difference. For most common tasks like surfing, writing notes, using iTunes, you will notice no difference at all, except smoother animations (lol).

I got the MB Air 13" 2010 Ultimate, but even that was way too much. The base model + upgraded storage is all I needed. Not sure why I paid extra for the CPU boost. And seeing how fast the prices are dropping, I definitely made a mistake. The 2010 Ultimate is now only worth about 60% of its retail value, which is very remarkable price drop.

And most people will upgrade anyways in just a few years at most, so it makes exactly ZERO sense.

I will skip the 2011 refresh and wait for 2012. Most likely you'll be getting a carbon body, perhaps an even higher resolution screen, and more speed for a lower price.

2008 MB Air owners, definitely upgrade. 2010 Air owners, rather don't.

Yes, she is full time self employed (50k a year). Being self employed she doesn't pay FIT weekly like most people do. As such, anything I can write off (legally) for her business we do. It brings the tax liability every April down.

Same here. I got a 2010 Ultimate and I will skip the 2011 update.

If they had allowed a 8gb RAM upgrade then I would have gotten the update, but as it stands, I dont see the point of updating for just the CPU bump. I dont care for the backlit keyboard or the thunderbolt.

I'm kind of happy I jumped in last year and bought the 2010 air.
It's awesome to see the changes that apple has made to the machine! I'm so envious of the backlight on the keyboard. But besides that and thunderbolt(will probably not be a big deal for most consumers for a few more years) it's just a iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS if you will. I'm sure the new processors are great, but I'm in college and have more important things to worry about than having the best specks for an ultra-portable - like pizza and beer.
I'll be buying lion once the .1 update is out, and I'm sure It'll have me enjoying my air just as much as I did the day I bought it.
Chances are I won't upgrade my air until they change the body again, which won't be for at least three years I bet. :)
