As I believe the kids say on the internet – WTF?

When I read that earlier I checked the date. Early April fool?

Even before I read about Bryan Robson's news, I was thinking that footballers seem to have a high mortality rate, with dying young, hemorrhages, cancer etc. (apologies for being rather brutal). Or it is just these things are reported more?

Probably both. Every time a famous player dies it's a news item, especially when they die young. So I'm sure it's overrepresented in the media. But they also beat themselves up during their careers, and as we've seen even young players like Antonio Puerta can succumb to conditions that might not have been so dangerous in a less-athletic occupation (though also arguably less detectable). After a career ends, the body is a little more worn out than your average person.

I'm sure it depends on the person - Ryan Giggs, for example, has certainly taken much better care of himself than Maradona - but I think there is a definite potential for long-term damage from a career in professional sports, and the effects are not always obvious.

Taking any machine to its limits has consequences, and the human body is no exception.

I'm sure the £30k fine is small change for him though :)

Well, it seems us not getting promotion will cost MM £6m+

With our recent run of form, and Megatron simply slating the team which funnily enough hasn't improved results, I'd be more worried about how much extra relegation is going to cost us!!

Edit: Lehamn has indeed signed for Arsenal until the end of the season

We'll only see Mad Jens take the pitch if something happens to Almunia, but even seeing him on the bench will be brilliant.

Maybe it will come out of Tabloid Wayne's pin money.

Do you think Megatron will stay on as manager for next season if results don't improve?

Sounds about right. Balotelli appears to have the brain of a three year old.

Europa League update: Man City out, Liverpool all but out, as Braga dive, time-waste and cheat their way to the inevitable 0-0 result.

EDIT: Liverpool out, and rather lamely I might add. Braga never really offered much and only go through via a lucky penalty. Liverpool were pretty unconvincing in attack. Bad performance from the officials as well, I thought the application of cards was inconsistent, and we had a debatable penalty shout. But Liverpool only have themselves to blame. Between the group stage, round of 32 and round of 16, Liverpool played 10 matches, allowed only 4 goals and yet still managed to get knocked out. We scored 9 goals, but seven came in just two matches, and we failed to score in 6 of 10 matches (scoring only once in our last 4 matches). Any team worth their salt in this competition would have scored more often. Carroll showed promise today but we're still very much a work in progress.

Speaking of crap refereeing - that handball in Scotland, oh my word. Why do we have five officials in the Europa League again? Well done, Sepp, Michel & Co..

It's to justify all the money FIFA earns

Indeed, Liverpool never really looked like scoring. I think Carroll had a good shout for a penalty though. It was a blatent shove in the back, which put him off balance and caused him to fall into the other guy, which somehow DID count as a foul against Carroll

I guess all the frustration of the bib had to be channeled somewhere

As for Megatron, he's had some time now to try and turn things around and clearly hasn't. MM isn't noted for his patience either, although he IS MM's man which might give him a little more time...

Edit: The draw for the CL has been made, with Chelsea drawing Man U and Spurs drawing Real. Still, it means 1 English team will make it through :)

Only seen it once, but the 5th official seems to peer round the post after the event; starting position?

Liverpool - can't play Manchester United every week! Lackluster.

Just hope there is nothing to fear when the referee is named; he needs to be strong and fair.:)

Cheers,

I love the color commentator: "What...an...absolute...fool." Truer words were never spoken. He's so very talented, but he's even more stupid than he is talented. If he had a shred of discipline or brains about him he might be one of the best players in Europe.

Barca might have gotten a rather easy draw, but I would argue that they weren't afraid of anybody anyway. You have to feel for Shaktar, they got the short end of the stick. Spurs' impressive European adventure ends here I'm afraid, though they do have the capability of making it pretty interesting if they play well. But Mourinho is a winner at this level. The all-English tie should be a bit of a derby. On paper Chelsea are edging it due to United's injuries but Ferguson manufactures victories for a living so all bets are off.

Inter got luckiest IMO. They still look a bit weak in certain areas but they should be able to deal with Shalke.

My predicable predictions put Barca, Chelsea, Real and Inter in the Semis, though the English tie is a coin-flip.

As long as it's the right kind of fairness, eh? ;) :D

i wouldn't rule out Shaktar yet ... so far they have suceed with rather ease into this quarter final: i would rate them as a massivly dangerous team to play against

Schalke is absolutly baffling: Magath just lead them into the CL quarter final and into the german cup final and gets kicked  ...
yet i wouldn't rule them out: Raul up front simply has too much CL goal scoring expierence.. i have given them zero chance to get through the group stage and yet here they are
Inter did essentially sit back 2 games against Bayern and got through because of the away goal rule (which included an offside goal): they have a strong defense but upfront it's sneijder + etoo and nothing else

The Spurs / Madrid draw is a fascinating one from a neutral's perspective. Greatly looking forward to those games. I favor Madrid to get through but I'm expecting some entertaining football.

United drew Chelsea, why am I not surprised? Got to break that Stamford Bridge hoodoo sometime.

They have certainly performed above expectations. But to beat Barcelona is a huge task. If they did it would be the biggest upset win since....I don't even know.

Italian teams are dangerous in two-legged affairs, and while most of their attack goes through Sneijder and Eto'o, they are a dynamite combination and one to be feared by any team. Shalke will have to step up their game break down Inter's defense.

It's worth mentioning that Barca and Real will face each other in the semis if they win their respective ties, so there will be no all-Spanish final.

EDIT: The MLS season started in case anyone cares...Sky Sports' solitary mention of the league concerned D Beck's thinnning hair.

Great set of results today as the arse-nal draw and Man-U win :D can't wait for Match of the Day to see that poor defending from Arse-nal and also Johnny Evans is rubbish why did he tackle like that? he's a idiot.

Blimey, it's still too close to call down the bottom of the Premier League. 8th placed Sunderland are only 6 points from the relegation zone with 8 or 9 games left to play.

I've been thinking we would need 40 points to survive this season, I'm not sure that will be enough now.

On a positive note, I was still at school the last time Wolves won at Villa Park. It's about bloody time. :D

J. Evans — not as good as C. Evans.

Jonny Evans still has a world of potential; he's been really slowed down by the injuries the past two seasons, so I'm not ready to give up on him quite yet. Thank goodness for Chris Smalling - a more important signing than Chicharito IMO.

Hoping Chelsea and City split the points tomorrow.

Yeah, the bottom of the table is doing my head in. The relegation battle will end up being more interesting than the race for the title - all the teams involved have enough quality to stay in the BPL during most normal seasons. I hope Wigan and Blackpool can stay up.
