It may just be me, but I found this one more interesting than those of past.
Tactically I quite enjoyed the first half, although I've got a feeling Ashley's mind was elsewhere. ;)

One point of interest, in the first half Rooney was the more advanced of the two strikers, even though you'd expect that of Owen.
I take that as an indication that Fergie will deploy him the same way he did last year (if it ain't broke) but where will that put Chicarito who's deadly on the shoulders of the last defender (as Terry found out today)?
Does that mean we won't be seeing the two of them much?

Yeah both teams went for it but United played better on the day. I don't have any idea why he played Owen there. He didn't look comfortable there at all IMO. I think Hernandez will play more games this season than Owen. Your right hes an out and out striker and i hope to see Rooney play behind him.

He seemed to click with Berbatov right away on the pitch as well

It is a bit but there's no point working your ass off if your boss isn't bothered. Getting rid of your best players and not signing any new talent makes it very difficult to be competitive. I think he just got fed up of the situation. As it's the start of the season it may be a while before any new jobs open up for him.

Not surprisingly, I'd like to see Berbatov start with Rooney against Newcastle United, Chicharito to come on for the latter with 65 minutes gone; Rooney has an international and Berbatov seems to have a good partnership with Hernandez. I think Wayne will get more rest this season. Build some partnerships, including Owen.

Edit - another player makes sense given Milner was grudgingly accepted, or maybe not allowed to spend the money.

Cheers,
OW

Rumour is Young is to be sold without O'Neils consent
And Milner too. As MacBoobsPro, if you're manager wants to sell of some of your best assets and young talent, why are you putting in all the hard work, it's for nothing?

O'Niell was sick of seeing all his best players leave. Maybe Lerner should have been satisfied with top six finishes and worried more about keeping his best players rather than wheeling and dealing to try and break into the top four...

Too late — I spoke to our man Woy earlier and instructed him that Torres would be at the KC for the rest of the season.

As long as it isn't a swap deal for Bullard.... ;)

Scary news though.

If Villa can get Sven in then they're onto a winner, O'Neill is vastly overrated. Essentially a failure in the transfer market, long ball football, just dull. And apparently he's a total wanker in the dressing room.

Hopefully this Bullard vs Hull saga will finally put to bed the widely believed myth that Jimmy Bullard is some sort of footballing God because he occasionally does something mildly amusing, when in fact he's a worse money grabber than most. Of course he doesn't have to take a pay cut, but we're talking a pay cut from £2m a year to £1m a year or something; he's hardly going to be signing on is he.

It has certainly changed my opinion of him. Maybe he's being so greedy because he knows his knee is finished and he wants to rake in as much money as possible from the Tigers before he calls it quits.

Moreso, O'Neill's big challenge was to get Villa into the Champions League – selling two of the clubs best young players to two of their major rivals for a Champions League place isn't going to make his task any easier, no does it give him confidence in the ambitions of the board and chairman.

As I mentioned, he had the chance to go to Celtic for the season without taking a hit to his wages – and with it would be a very good chance of a medal or two and a stab at European football. At his age and with his injury record he's not going to get any better chances of those things.

When Bullard is at his best he's a fine player, certainly for a club like us – and by all accounts when he's doing well he's a good player to have in the dressing room.

But it seems – from his performances towards the end of last season – that he now has no confidence in his own ability to withstand a challenge, and as I mentioned in a previous post there are indications that he's been causing problems in the dressing room.

While I think he's a good player there's always something about him that I've found incredibly irritating, although this may be due to me being a Yorkshireman and therefore having an inbuilt mistrust of chirpy cockneys :p. But we really need to be shut of him now, one way or another. He doesn't want to play for us, we don't want him here. Our cash is still okay though, it would seem.

For what it's worth, he was at the match on Saturday watching from the stands. I hope we made the grasping little sod pay for his ticket.

I don't think Villa can go any farther without massive cash injections. They are doing just about as well as can be expected of them given their financial cout, and Randy Lerner is unlikely to spend more money. The best they can hope for is to maintain the level they are at now, which is not going to happen if they keep selling players.

Whoever takes over from O'Neill will be in for a rough ride. I hope it isn't Bradley.

It seems like all the premier league kits have been unveiled (if not officially): http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/English_Football_League/season/2010-2011/premier-league.html

Some shockers in there, look at Fulham's Away and 3rd, Chelsea's 3rd, and Everton's Away.

That Everton away shirt is unbelievable. Why not just wear a sign that says "Beat me up before I get to the tunnel"?

Has Liverpool had an away kit like that anytime recently? I'm not sure I've seen anyone use that scheme. I'm not sure what to think yet, but I don't hate it.

I think Spurs' diagonal blue on the shoulders works better than on the shorts. The sponsor logo fits better with the rest of the kit than Mansion's did. I suspect I'll be wearing one of these soon enough.

I like the Liverpool 3rd kit, it uses the colors of my MLS side. :D

Also like the Liverpool away kit.

The Everton away kit is not that bad, though the colors are definitely, um, daring.

Everton used to play in salmon pink shirts back in their early days – back then the attitude towards pink and blue were reversed, pink being close to red it was seen as a more masculine hue. It was only in the 20th Century that it changed to being a more girly colour.

Meanwhile, our shirts are still rubbish. Pah. :(
