It is rather disconcerting that we have signed a player who did refuse to turn out for his team... if he did it once then he might do it again.
It does ring a few alarm bells, that's for sure.

Anyway, it's our first away trip today – the short drive to Doncaster. Will we record our first away win (in all competitions) in nearly 18 months? Amazing scenes.

It is rather disconcerting that we have signed a player who did refuse to turn out for his team... if he did it once then he might do it again. However I do understand why he did it. The transfer was on/off over the course of a couple of weeks and I think Rapid Wien were maybe a little at fault then decided to push the issue. If the player knows he's going to sign for another club the next day and doesn't want to lose his chance to play for that club in the Champions League. Tough call.

the funny thing is that the week before the aston villa game rapid had already the deal finished with glasgow and it was 'called off' from glasgow during the contract talks _with jelavic himself_ ... according to some pundits here in austria he demanded too much from glasgow

obviously getting the salary he wanted wasn't top priority after he got booted from the rapid squad
especially this close to the end of the transfer window

This is the SPL you are talking about! 25 goals in 70 games is decent enough for us.

you should have entered the bidding for Mark Janko with his 75 goals in 108 games for salzburg:
athletic, can shoot powerful with both legs,~195cm height yet still decent technique and pace ... simply a ridiculous good penalty box striker

was a 5 million euro transfer to Twente

raul meireles though is quite the (defensive) midfielder .. but wether he can settle in the rather different premier league ... i somehow doubt it

what is it with english football and the non appreciation of the defensive midfielder position anyway ? in other leagues (germany, italy) the players in those positions are very often big stars in theirs squads, considered crucial key players or at least fan favorites/ captains
in england they often seem to be in the "also happend to be on the pitch" category

Tottenham. LOL. :D How do you lose to Wigan? Crucial points for the Latics though.

A lot of pundits have been predicting that Spurs will lose focus on the league due to their European adventure, and while that is surely just cliche punditry, it sure seems to have played out this weekend.

I probably shouldn't laugh until Liverpool play Wigan annyway, since we are clearly capable of dropping points against any side now.

Well, seeing as Man City had half a dozen expensive defensive midfielders, they'd better start appreciating them.

I think that the defensive midfield position is a hot item these days, after the success of the 4-2-3-1 we saw during the WC. USA usually started with a 4-4-2 (though we usually played one defensive midfielder plus Michael Bradley, who is a true box-to-box midfielder), England infamously used that formation as well, Chile had that exciting 3-3-1-3 or whatever it was...but most of the top sides seemed to rely on a couple defensive midfielders and used wingbacks. Brazil didn't have much luck with it but Germany and Spain did.

They might have garnered three points at our expense this afternoon, but Doncaster Rovers commit the unforgivable sin of playing music after a goal is scored. The sight of 8,000 South Yorkshire folk pumping their pasty arms in unison to the tuneless dirge only served to highlight the rampant buffoonery of it all.

We therefore scored a moral victory. Doesn't affect the table, mind.

Solid win for Arsenal today away at Blackburn, who always seem to give us trouble (and kicks). Shame about RVP, hopefully he's only done the ankle for 10 days as most are reporting, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear it's for longer. Chamakh looks solid enough in replacement, and of course if Theo keeps it up we won't want for goals.

RVP hurt? I've heard that before...

Torres has become the new RVP, except rather than suffer injuries that keep him out for months, he exists in a permanently half-fit state and might as well be somehere else for all the good he can do.

Musical chairs time - looks like Given is going to Fulham, which means Schwarzer to Arsenal.

He'll be the first Aussie Gunner, I think.

I think they had a chap in the late 1970s/early 1980s who only made a handful of appearances... his name escapes me though.

Damn good memory Jaffa - John Kosmina started just one game and three from the bench in 78/79 before Terry Neill offloaded him. That was apparently his one and only footballing foray outside of Australia.

A bit of further research shows there was one other - and far more successful Aussie Gunner - Jimmy Jackson captained Woolwich Arsenal to promotion from the 2nd Division in 1903/04.

Haha, the Woolloomoollo Philosophy Department. :D

Would you care for some ketchup on your words? :)

Chelsea had a bad hair day. Even ring-ins can play below expectations, win 2-0 instead of flog 5-0... but they're still easily on target to make any sense of fair competition against them a mockery:

Will they even concede a single goal in their first four matches?

PS. I've concluded Chelsea and Man City are not the same mindset. Chelsea is Roman's expensive personal yacht he likes to trick out and take out to win races every weekend, Man City is Mansour bankrolling his son's Hollywood acting career even though he's never seen him act.

His first visit to Man City since buying it two years ago. Never actually even set foot in the home ground before. Man City may not be run like a proper football club anymore but it's certainly run like an emirate business - just keep throwing petrodollars at it even if it's a loss making venture until eventually the competition can't afford to keep up, like Emirates Airlines killing Gulf Airlines and other carriers who were around and profitable before but struggle now.

Roger Johnson gets his first goal for Birmingham! Nice to see the ex Wycombe lad doing well, and Mike Williamson playing for Newcastle. Wouldn't have known they were Premiership players when they were at the club!

Funny that. Derby reject Luke (Reg) Varney who we've had on loan a few times has signed on a season long loan for Blackpool and he scored for them yesterday against Fulham. He doesn't even get to warm the bench at Derby

Bit late to the fold here but I think it's worth noting that Theo Walcott scored a goal this weekend. :D I'm glad, of course. I missed most of the game though so I don't know how he played overall. S

Another day another several weeks RVP injury. Great player but just cant seem to stay on the pitch. I wonder if he's ever played a season without significant injury.

I think it's down to an overall lack of quality in that department right now. These aren't the days when Keano and Vieira led and defined their teams.

Michael Essien and Darren Fletcher are the best by far in that position in the Premiership at the moment. Citeh certainly overstocked themselves in that position, and I assume Yaya Touré will make his mark over the season. And it doesn't help that there are really no good DMs featuring in the English national setup at the moment - they still really miss Owen Hargreaves.

I think I agree with your assessment of Meireles. A good bit of business by Liverpool, but bossing the midfield in Portugal and bossing the midfield in England are two different things.

Possibly the most exciting bit of news so far this season – the return from retirement of one of the game's true greats.

Ladies and gentlemen, Dean Windass is back at the age of 41.

Deano made his debut today for the appropriately named Barton Town Old Boys, who play in the Northern Counties East League Division One. He used to play with their manager in his early days and has signed on a game-by-game basis as a bit of a favour. Clearly he's still got it, notching up a hat trick in a 3-1 victory over Yorkshire Amateur.

Deano's back playing again – all is right in the world of football. :)

I'm more worried about his age than anything else. Lucas is going to be relied upn increasingly.

I am legitimately excited! He's got a good nine years or so left in him. :D
