Despite hating the Red Sox (the most hateable team in MLB besides the Yankees), I have to agree that the Red Sox have a reputation for being a well-run club, and while Henry might not spend as much as the fans want, he will certaintly manage the clubs finances with better care than Statler and Waldorf did.

The Red Sox have the second-highest payroll in baseball. If it weren't for the Yankees, they would BE the Yankees.

XIII - you missed the stamps; Chelsea 2 - Arsenal 1 (aka Sagna's Revenge). I disagree about the Alex free kick, Arshavin should have stood in front of/behind the Chelsea player who was on the end of the wall. Granted, there might have been a break in play to discuss whether a head in the back of the net counts double, but it's likely the ball would have been kept out.

The freekick wall has been pointed out to me since, and maybe Song could've been a bit more brave too! And tell me about the stamps?! I only saw one on Diaby....

Very true - which is why I always get annoyed with Boston fans and their self-assumed "underdog" image. They are only underdogs compared with the Yankees.

Nevertheless, I will hate the Red Sox a little less if Henry can turn Liverpool around.

Do yourself a favor and avoid the iphone forums here. 'Tis a silly place. ;)

They'll fail to win it if they're not in it, though. ;)

Sound logic, Jaffa, though I sincerely hope it doesn't come into play. In all seriousness, Liverpool are showing every indication of struggling to finish midtable this season.

If anyone needed a further demonstration (after Pompey) of just how closely league position is linked to financial stability, this would be it.

There's the old story of how Liverpool acquired their all red kit – originally they wore white shorts and socks with their red shirts but as Ian St John recounts in his autobiography...

'[Shankly] thought the colour scheme would carry psychological impact—red for danger, red for power. He came into the dressing room one day and threw a pair of red shorts to Ronnie Yeats. “Get into those shorts and let’s see how you look,” he said. “Christ, Ronnie, you look awesome, terrifying. You look 7ft tall.” “Why not go the whole hog, boss?” I suggested. “Why not wear red socks? Let’s go out all in red.” Shankly approved and an iconic kit was born.'

Ian St John – a true visionary. ;)

And he had the good sense to stop at socks - no red boots.

Re message boards - plenty of crass postings by fans of all colours.

Lord Blackadder -
We would have gone into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but our keeper made a mistake by coming out way too far to make an ineffective punch, got caught out of position and gifted Seattle an equalizer.

The 18 yard line is a bit far. Yeah, Seattle did look like what they were, the home team. Well taken goal by Burns, and Columbus won the battle of the kits. First full MLS type thingy game I've seen, the first touch quality is more varied, and I'm not sure about the picture in picture interview.

iJohnHenry -
NOTICE: This is not me, so stop with the pleas for money. Thanks.

Mmm...'Location: In a hole, in a wall.' - if that's not a cash machine:confused:

Malouda on Sagna in the first-half, Sagna on Malouda in the second. I haven't got the picture/video, but you'll have future games covered with your new toy.:)

Foreign owners - yep, the action of owners in general, not their nationality. How many fans complain when the team's top class foreign striker bags a hat-trick?

Cheers,
OW

I did think our kit looked better. I was miffed that Seattle chose a yellow shirt, almost mocking our home colors with their neon yellow shirt.

To be frank, football commentating in this country is still in it's infancy, or perhaps the toddler stage. At best decent, at worst, unendurable. Oddly, I caught the tail end of Seattle match a couple weeks ago and their local broadcast used a Brit commentator, didn't catch his name though.

Some of the US-based pundits have said the whole match was pretty open but I disagree - Warzycha had Columbus sit back the whole first half and absorb pressure. Only our two strikers stayed downfield and our goal came on a counterattack. In the second half things upened up as we chased the game, particularly at the end.

Andy Gruenebaum played like an Arsenal keeper for much of the match ;) - heartstoppingly tentative, and while our defense were badly positioned for the first goal, I still question the keeper's decision to run out that far to punch weakly.

Burns took his goal well, I've seen him play in person and sometimes he looks good, other times a big clod. Center back (and Liverpool native) Andy Iro had his usual donkey moments in the back, though he does win just about everything in the air. Every time he has the ball at his feet my heart jumps into my throat, just waiting for the ball to get tangled in his legs or for him to hoof the ball wildly in the general direction of the opposition. He has physicality but also a tendency towards clumsy play.

Back in the world of 'real' football, away from the masses of overpaid primadonnas, last night saw the Owls beat the mighty Chesterfield 8-7 on penalites with former Man City stopper Nicky Weaver being the hero, saving 3 penalties and scoring the winner himself.
Who needs the PL eh? :)

We're all Wednesday aren't we?

I wish Columbus could have borrowed him for our Open Cup match! :D

Just saw the video of the Peterborough - Notts County bust-up. That was intense.

EDIT: Frederico Macheda has caused a bit of a storm by referring to Wayne Rooney as a chav. Not seeing the controversy? Or did Macheda only just notice? :D

EDIT2: Aston Villa defender Eric Lichaj has decided to become a US international after being called up by both Poland and the USA for the same friendly...one would hope that after all that attention he takes the field at some point!

Can he play left back? If so let him play I say.

To be honest I know very little about him, because he hasn't featured for Villa at all until this year (he made a few appearances out on loan last season). Like Jay DeMerit, he bypassed a college (after one season) or MLS career for a risky move to Europe. He's only 21, so the next couple seasons may be a breakout period for him.

He can be used at left back, so perhaps he'll turn out to be a long-term solution for the USA at that position. If Poland were interested in him he must have something to offer. Bob Bradley had him in camp with the rest of the national team before the World Cup, and he's played for our youth sides as well I think.

That was an intentionally inflammatory translation propagated by the media to stir up crap and sell more papers. Macheda was merely comparing his own urban working-class background with Rooney's.

Macheda is an Italian chav himself, anyway. Whatever!

I thought that might be the case! I had a quick look and am now convinced my phone is suffering from numerous ailments I wouldn't even have noticed before!

Glad to hear Sagna gave some back :)

Two fantastic (Arsenal related, sorry...) quotes from today.

Firstly Vito Mannone, 3rd/4th choice goalkeeper at Arsenal:

I get annoyed when I don't play, it's not as if the other two do that well.

You tell 'em Vito!

And secondly, things are not going well for Sylvester in Germany at his new club, Werder Bremen. Their sporting director said:

His playing style is remarkably slow and he makes many mistakes.

Had he never seen him play before..?!

I've always been surprised as to why Arsene doesn't use him. When he came on last season or two ago i thought he was head and shoulders better than the other two. *shrug*

it's ok, we all know rooney is an inbred football hooligan....

They could always just pull a rugby league, and do away with relegation. Instead, award 'licences' based on how much money clubs have, how big their grounds are, and their marketing potential.

Yes, that sounds proper.

What a splendind idea! I think I'll give my old mate Dave Richards a call and get him to take me out for lunch at the Ritz :)

Administration and a points deduction could prove devastating for the club. From the perspective of a Liverpool fan, I can only hope that Broughton's gamble pays off. It also paints Hicks in particular in the worst possible light - we know that he won't sell until he makes a big profit, but nobody, including Hicks himself, has been able to explain how he plans to do that.

It puts the ownership of the big clubs into perspective. We as fans turn a blind eye to bad business practices as long the clubs compete and win. I have to admit, I didn't even read about Hick's mismangement of other sports teams until after the problems started at Anfield. And it's not just happening in Liverpool...Manchester United could be set for an even bigger fall than Liverpool in the not-so-distant future if they aren't careful.

I don't imagine this will in any way change the way the league is run, though. People will blame Hicks and Gillette rather than the system.

EDIT: A couple interesting upsets in the world of international football, Japan 1-0 Argentina and my cultural ancestors Slovenia beaten by Armenia 3-1...any predictions on how the two Irish sides will fare?

Italy is still trying to find it's identity, they could be vulnerable; a 1-0 win or a 1-1 draw for the northerners is a strong possibility.

EDIT: close but no cigar. Final result: 0-0.
