Bébé nets his first goal for the United first team in the Carling Cup match against Wolves. I know a lot of people laughed at this signing, but he clearly has all the physical tools necessary to thrive in the Premiership, just needs some more polish and a bit more work within the team concept. Kid's going to be a quality player.

Chicharito really looking like the bargain of the year. Maybe Rooney should stay in Dubai a while longer...

Ah, but that's the thing – everyone knows it goes on, but actually saying anything bout it publicly just isn't on. ;)

Forget publicly, I suppose it's not even safe to mention to a woman over dinner...

Wolves played well, better than they have of late, but nobody can defend against the usual Man United late winner. Hernandez is a quality player, and he has so far proven me wrong about his ability to adjust to the Premier League. I knew he was good, but he's also proven to be very adaptable to different styles of play.

Amos was shaky.

Agree about Bebe being able to look after himself, but he needs to build up his stamina. As you point out about the polish and team, his touch ranged from very good to clumsy, and he'll have to learn that he doesn't need to beat everyone - similar process re Ronaldo and Nani.

Hernandez - I'm impressed by his passing.

takao - I know it's a few weeks back, but did you see the Belgium v Austria game?

Thoughts on Schweinsteiger to Manchester United?

Cheers,
OW

a nailbiting disaster thanks to Paul Scharner who again and again proves how much of an idiot he is ... an unnecessary red card and then belgium can turn the game around ... luckily we managed to pull again a late goal ... a victory against belgium would have been essential to qualifiy in our difficult group

Thoughts on Schweinsteiger to Manchester United?

is that rumored
? i'm not exactly sure how he would fit into the manchester system with it's wingers and if he could link up with their style of play... if manchester wanted to sign a german player i suspect that some of the younger players might be more interesting
the discoveries of this years seem to be Holtby and Schürrle from mainz who are pretty much confirmed to debut in the national team soon

So... the director of a forthcoming thriller about said octopus is keeping him in the news by creating an air of mystery around his death?

Can't see why they'd want to do that. :p

what mistery?

This editorial speculates that the ravenous, muckraking English tabloid press may become a major liability to England's WC bid.

Fortunately, FIFA is far too objective and transparent an organization to let the behavior of a few tabloids to influence their choice of host conutry for 2018...

...hmm that's funny, my nose seems to have grown longer as I typed that... :D

Mind you, the Rooskies aren't playing nice either. If there's one country the English press will fail to bully, it's Russia. They have a much nastier and even more corrupt press. And they tend to kill people they don't like.

takao,

Schweinsteiger - it is a rumour that has resurfaced and today the names Chelsea and Manchester City added. It may just be him and his agent trying to draw a better extension out of Bayern, like Sneijder has done with Inter - it's not quite at Rooney level.

Schweini has been rumored to be unhappy at Bayern for a while now. Despite his fantastic World Cup he is still a surprisingly underrated player on the world stage and would welcome the challenge of competing in a higher profile league.

Maybe his style of play doesn't mesh with United's, but he's a fantastic player and I'm sure he'd make it work.

Interesting to note that both Rooney and Tevez are expected to miss the Machester Derby, which of course means both are sure to be made available at the last minute.

Maybe his style of play doesn't mesh with United's, but he's a fantastic player and I'm sure he'd make it work.

If he's unhappy at Bayern, does that mean he's certain to leave the Bundesliga? I wonder if any other German teams have the moey to buy him, and if he'd be interested in that.

EDIT: The kerfluffle over the 2018 World Cup has gotten a little more intense. Two lessons come out of this: FIFA is corrupt from top to bottom (no suprise there) and the Russians will win because they are the most corrupt of the bidders and therefore understand the bidding process better than any of the others.

I recently got interested in Premier League [LINK1] [LINK2] and have decided to be a Baggie, are there any other West Brom supporters on this forum?

I support your fiercest rivals. :p

And by the way, who wrote all that rubbish in those links you posted. Such gems as...

"West Bromich have this stadium that has been around since 1900 so apart from being super old its also hard to guage the cost. Based on wikipedia and adding up all the numbers about the cost I came to a sum total of £10 050 000. I’d be a little scared sitting in a stadium thats over a hundred years old but then again living on the verge of death while watching football could be exciting."

As much as I dislike them, their stadium has had loads of work done over the 100 years since they made the Hawthorns their home. The oldest current stand dates back to the seventies and the other three have been rebuilt over the last fifteen years.

Oh dear! You need to read up on your team, you high flying Tesco bag wearing boinger. :D

I'm so confused o_O I'm fairly certain my research (pretty much purely based on wikipedia articles) is flawed but I had fun writing the articles and choosing a team. I still need to write a part 3 wrap up but I'll do that some other time.

Sorry for insulting your research in my above post but it's full of inaccuracies. Hang on, you're one of them so I'm not bloody sorry. :p

This might help with your research. :)

Top five football rivalries

1. West Bromwich Albion & Wolves
Even though both Villa Park and St Andrew's are close to the Hawthorns, West Bromwich still look a dozen miles north to Wolves as the subjects of their reciprocated dislike. It's been going on for 122 years, and reached its zenith last season when the two teams met five times in various competitions.

2. Ipswich Town & Norwich City
They call it the Old Farm Derby. Though East Anglia wouldn't be considered one of football's hotbeds, the rivalry between Ipswich and Norwich is fierce, intense and long-standing. The fact they are out on a limb geographically, and have played each other with remarkable frequency over the years, are major factors.

3. Liverpool & Manchester United. Both have same-city rivals, but Liverpool and United consider the one separated by the East Lancs Road as much bigger. Some say it's because they regularly competed for the same trophies; others that it is down to the culture of the two cities, whether in sport, the arts or music.

4. Portsmouth & Southampton
Harry Redknapp's oscillation between the two clubs polarised the intensity of the rivalry. But it has always been there: they have long called each other ‘Scummers'. It probably dates back to sea-faring days: Portsmouth being the home of the Royal Navy, Southampton the home of the Merchant Navy.

5. Cardiff City & Swansea City
The two cities are neighbours on the south Wales coast, and their rivalry is deeply embedded both culturally and in sporting terms. Though the teams haven't met for eight years, the enmity hasn't decreased: Swansea players unfurled an anti-Cardiff banner after winning the 2006 Football League Trophy at the Millennium Stadium.

The also-rans 6. Aston Villa & Birmingham

Just setting off to old trafford in a few mins. Going to the pub there, couldn't get a ticket haha. :D Should be a great game as Van Der Vaart looks like a class signing for them. I expect an end to end game!
