Phil Brown's hat must be pretty ratty from being thrown into so many rings by now. :D
It must be, but Phil will be looking at the positives and what the hat still brings to the table.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are starting tonight with a young 'keeper making his Premier League debut. This is quite notable because Wojciech Szczęsny is, I believe, wearing the highest squad number ever seen in the Premier League - number 53.

Best of luck to Arsenal, this is a good chance to make a statement.

I think it will come down to Arsenal's ability to score - Man U will get a goal or two...Arsenal need to be able to respond and not allow themselves to get deflated by a United goal. They have the attacking tools to put 3 or 4 past United if they play to their potential.

Ah but today of all days is when our attacking players pretty much failed to show up, granted Utd defended well but still our defense edged our attackers. Even a missed penalty was not enough for a draw. Same ol Arsenal...fail to win (or draw) the big games.

Can't believe i'm now forced to hope that Chelsea beat them on sunday.

United's defense won the match. Arsenal had more attacking talent on the pitch, but they just could not score.

Lolz to Wayne.

EDIT: YouTube is blocked here in my office, but those of you looking for a laugh (and who haven't seen it already) should search for "Roy Hodgson face rub" or something similar on Youtube for Woy's hilarious frustration during the Newcastle loss. He rubs his face so violently the video looks sped up. I'm still chuckling about it.

Actually, a real snood has a hood attached. Nasri was wearing a neck gaitor. So was YaYa Toure, and he did pretty well on Saturday.

The game wasn't much to look at. So many missed passes by both teams.

Sartorial elegance isn't my forte.

On the game - defend the 'D' and stop Walcott cutting in, job done. Missed passes, but then Fletcher and Carrick were in midfield. Overall, Manchester United were the better team. Rooney has his passing back - can he sort out his pace and penalty taking? Some good saves by No.53, but poor distribution.

Cheers,
OW

Yep - you can let Arsenal play pretty in midfield (and they had the greater share of possession tonight), but block them when they try to take it too far forward and instead force them to pass it out to the flanks where they're not as effective.

That was our tactic when we beat them two years ago, still does the trick. ;)

Anderson was fantastic once again tonight. Really bossed it all over the pitch. Back four was great, though Evra had some wobbly moments yet again. I'm pleased that Rafael has taken hold of the right back position. He'll be there a long, long time.

Arsenal really need Cesc and RVP back at 100%. I think Chamakh is a solid forward, but asking him to go it alone against Rio and Vida is a bit much to ask.

Did Nasri even play tonight? :D

Sepp Blatter on gay football fans traveling to Qatar:

"I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities." He continued then on a more serious note, saying: "We are definitely living in a world of freedom and I'm sure when the World Cup will be in Qatar in 2022, there will be no problems.

Sepp Blatter on FIFA's for-profit World Cup selections:

"This is development of football and don't speak about money," Blatter said.

"This has nothing to do with money as it had nothing to [do with it] with Africa. It is the development of the game. We have to take to places where it can improve and have a social and cultural impact. And it's what we did here in Africa."

Then maybe you ought to donate the multibillion dollar profts to charity or at least to football federations in poor countries? **** off Sepp, you are a massive disgrace of a man, though I suppose that makes you eminently suited to represent FIFA. That is all...

Lord Blackadder:

Gay - Blatter could learn from that other football great, Berlusconi.

Roy Hodgson's face rub - the BBC programme MOTD 2 highlighted it. Last season with Fulham there was a game where it looked like he was trying to screw one of his eyeballs out of its socket. Liverpool should set up Roy Cam, maybe a Christmas DVD...

---

Silencio - agree about Anderson, hopefully he will get an injury free run and pull everything together.

Cheers,
OW

In a season with very little for a Liverpool supporter to laugh about, Woy's body language has been a source of constant amusement for me. Every time we score he reacts with a fiercly defiant gesture of some kind. I'm seriously worried he's going to hurt himself.

I give it 24 hours before Phil Brown 'throws his hat into the ring'.

Some goings-on in Scotland since I last posted. The vacant Aberdeen job was filled by Motherwell manager (and former Scotland boss) Craig Brown. Now I'm not really happy about this, Motherwell have consistently out-performed Aberdeen in the last couple of years, have won European places. I think Brown should have stayed at 'Well but he was without contract so I understand why he went. I still think Aberdeen have delusions of grandeur. So maybe Phil Brown for 'Well? :p

Apparently there will also be a vote about league restructuring this week, split the SPL into two leagues of 10. Some of the suggestions such as starting earlier to assist European games (which are normally held before our league starts), winter shut-down and less games make sense, but I can't help but think they are just tinkering around the edges and it won't make any real difference. And I'm pretty sure the top clubs won't lose any money out of it, we won't be seeing turkeys voting for Christmas anytime soon.

Some young lad for Inverness scored a cracking goal against Rangers at the weekend, (link for UK only). Their main striker is a lad called Adam Rooney, he's turning into a right pain! No relation, I believe.

You mean he's refused to sign a contract as Inverness aren't going anywhere and his team mates aren't up to it, paid for sex with old ladies and has a 20 a day habbit?

It should be 1 leage with 18 teams and a second league with 2. ;)

It owuld be interesting to see Scotland take a progressive approach and change some of the things people have been talking about in the UK - the winter break for instance. I also feel like Leagues should be structered so that the top couple clubs can't prevent changes that all the other clubs want.

Don't forget the laughable PK record. :D

On the contrary, he's been offered a new contract by ICT which he thinks is "very good" despite being good enough for at least the Championship, he's not shagged any monsters :)rolleyes:) He also looks normal. Young Adam is the back sheep of the family.

ICT have not been beaten away for a year, by anyone. Terry Butcher doing a cracking job up there (after false starts with Motherwell and Livingston). Only a matter of time before he's linked with a job elsewhere.

I think the current voting system is 11 out of 12 have to agree on major changes, which makes it nearly impossible as most clubs have a veto. So sometimes the Old Firm refuse to put through a change and sometimes it's the other 10. It is a very us v them attitude, and don't believe the Old Firm are rivals, from a business perspective the two are in bed together.

Liverpool finish top of their group in the Europa League after a meaningless and dreadful 0-0 draw with Utrecht. Yay.

The Old Firm run the league in all but name, it doesn't really matter what the other 18 teams do. I agree that the Old Firm are in cahoots with each other too - they certainly know where the money comes from, and they're never going to let the other clubs have a say.

There were a spate of bets on a red card prior to Jennings' dismissal, including – allegedly – a number from new accounts in Liverpool, the midfielder's home town. It'll be interesting to see what the outcome of this is.

I just read about that...very naughty indeed.

EDIT: Further complicated MLS news: the Re-Entry draft has finished, with a little under half the participating players being selected. Juan Pablo Angel has been sent to perpetually underperforming overdogs LA Galaxy. Columbus picked up verteran striker Jeff Cunningham, who played for us back in 1998-2004. It seems an odd selection; while Cunningham has been a productive scorer over the last few seasons at Dallas, Columbus need defenders and midfielders, not strikers...we just got rid of both of our starting fullbacks as well as our best holding and attacking midfielders (Brian Carroll and Guillermo Barros Schelotto). Also, is buying a 34 year-old striker the best way to start a "rebuilding" project? Still, I expect him to be a solid player for next season.
