Congrats on the new team awmazz! Best of luck, and keep us up-to-date on the A-League action!

As for Joe Cole, I'm torn. Benayoun is a bigger loss than some would realize. Interesting that both Cole and Benayoun are leaving their respective clubs in search of more starts...but each going to the club that benched the other.

We are paying a lot for Cole as well, he's not young and I'm not sure how Hodgson proposes to play him with Gerrard. The media have declared the signing as an attempt to convince Gerrard and Torres to stay, a statement that at least in Torres' case appears idiotic (how will Torres know anything about an English player who can't get a game for club or country?).

Moving on from sheer idiocy, Tottenham have decided to ban vuvuzelas. They sell them at Columbus games, and apart from one time when a guy was blowing one from right behind me into my ears, I don't think they are so annoying as to be ban-worthy.

Are those the final, approved designs then awmazz? Because it seems bizarre that the home and away shirts are so close to one another in terms of colour, irrespective of whether or not there's a clash with other teams...

It's the final badge as far as I know. The kit itself still looks final enough, but it's still a design and not actually being physically made or sold yet.

I was always under the impression that home and away kits are based on the shorts not the shirts. The shorts have to be opposite light/dark for those in the world viewing on black and white TVs to tell the teams apart is where I believe it originated from, ie, one team always has to be in light shorts, the other in dark shorts. The shirts only have to be different enough for the ref to tell them apart I think. Maybe it's the same rule for shirts too which is why the away strip has white shoulders and the home are dark.

or they could go aussie all the way and rip the sleeves entirely! :D

anyway i like it that they are different but retain the club's colors. some of the away kit we see are just puzzling (not to mention ugly) and seem to be designed with only marketing in mind. On the other hand from a marketing perspective, the rover's move doesn't seem to savvy. unlikely anyone would get both kits, given how subtle the difference is.

Well, the French police have now finally moved on the whole prostitutiuon scandal. Frank Ribery and Karim Benzema have both been questioned "in custody"...can things get any worse in France? (answer: yes, they can!)

Looks like the FFF are going to have to cough up some bail money in order to field a full-strength side for their next friendly. :D

No, the shirts have to be distinct too – at least in this country – hence my surprise at the two shirts being identical save for the sleeves. Perhaps the approach is different down under?

In terms of change kits, it's always been the shirt that's been the focus – at least, since caps and sashes were abandoned. Back in the very early days of the game players would buy their own kit and – while their shirts were usually very similar to those of their team mates – it wasn't uncommon for players to tip up in differently coloured leg wear. In fact, up until the 1920s it was the custom that the home team would change their shirts in the event of a clash rather than the away side – the FA changed the rule, but noted that only shirts needed to be changed, both teams could wear their first choice shorts and socks if they so wished.

Nowadays though, as you say, it's quite common for teams to have an alternative set of shorts and socks to wear with their home shirt should their lower-half garments clash with the opposition. A notable example would be Manchester United – their first choice kit features white shorts but it's not uncommon to see them turn out in black ones should their opponents be wearing light-hued shorts themselves.

When I saw the new Sydney Rovers shirts, it reminded me of an issue with the Crystal Palace away shirt of a couple of seasons back...

Picture 6.png

The away kit pictured was rarely used after officials complained that the red and blue swooshes made the shirts too similar to those of other red-clad clubs when seen from the side. Palace had to instead wear an all white third shirt, which was actually their training top customised with the sponsor's logo.

Given that problems can be caused by such a relatively small area of colour, it does seem very odd (to me at least) that the two Rovers' shirts aren't more distinct from one another. Looking at comments online I can see that quite a few other folk have raised the same point – if I was a more cynical chap, I might think that they'll perhaps settle on a different away design after a 'period of consultation' and say that they've made the change after listening to fan opinion, showing that the new club listens to their supporters. But I'm not that cynical, so I won't suggest it. ;)

As you say, according to wikipedia the rule is simply "the two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and also the referee and the assistant referees". That's about it, really.

I don't think Rovers will have the same issue as Palace because there are only 11 other teams in the A League to distinguish themselves from. The thing about newer franchises is they like to use more unique colours like purple and lime green and burnt oranges. ;) So only two other teams actually have red at all (both red shorts). Only one other team will have black shorts too, amazingly enough, so I think would be one of the few games actually requiring the away kit. Maybe as well for the two teams that are dark blue I guess.

Cameroon plays without sleeves don't they? I can't remember if it was the last WC maybe.

Well, they tried to – but FIFA said no. It was one of the African Cup of Nations, if I remember rightly.

It was good to see FIFA really getting to grips with the big problems in the game. Most people would think that stuff like racism, cheating and corruption needed stamping out, but those sleeveless shirts had to be stamped out.

Well, with FIFA only making 2 billion on the back of the World Cup, you've got to manage on what you have, and it all comes down to a matter of priorities!

Another away kit issue (which I think Jaffa already pointed out) will occur this season when WBA visit Newcastle.

The Newcastle kit is on the left below, the two WBA kits on the right. Which one can WBA wear not to clash with Newcastle. My guess is neither.

I do remember a few years ago a team turned up at Newcastle and the ref didn't like either of their kits so they had to play in Newcastle's away shirts.

Wigan have launched their new home kit. Much better than last year's awful awful design.

Well, we had to borrow a spare set of their shorts and socks in 2008-09, and hastily recommission the previous season's away kit when we had a second visit to St James' Park courtesy of the FA Cup...

It's alright, that Wigan shirt. I'm not sure about the stripe extending onto the shorts, though.

I think the only problem will be when you play away to Melbourne Heart:

Disappointing, if fellow fans didn't want it you would hope peer pressure alone would be enough to discourage rather than clubs deciding what fans can and can't do. Mind you, peer pressure wasn't enough to stop Mr Portsmouth!

I love this conversation we had in 2009 bemoaning vuvuzelas - ahead of our time!

I'm wondering if this was a team bonding idea gone wrong (and not in the way Big Helga did it for Scotland.) I was thinking of Italy in 2006, domestic league in turmoil, everyone against, forge some team spirit.

So Danny Wilson off to Liverpool, the transfer fee (if he plays enough games) will reduce our debt by a 1/5! I just hope he gets a game, an 18 year old lad could get very lost in a big club.

Ribery has been formally accused, and faces actual jail time if convicted - though, with his money, he should be able to wriggle out of it with a slap on the wrist.

I know nothing of him, but at 18 I don't expect to see him in the starting XI any time soon apart from perhaps a League Cup match. Center backs seem to get the same treatment as goalkeepers sometimes, in that they aren't taken very seriously till they are relatively old.

though at times there where games on TV where even as a watcher i thought : how could the ref allow this choice of shirts
like that infamous Switzerland - Holland game with one side wearing All-Red and the other side All-Orange: eye-sore game of the century

Löw lengthend his contract with the german national team for 2 more years

Many grounds already have longstanding rules in place banning musical instruments, so the vuvuzela will already be technically banned at many grounds. The KC is one such place, which is fortunate as I can guarantee that Stupid Question Boy (who sits behind me) would come equipped with one and blow it right in my ear.

As I understand it, under French law he can escape prosecution if he was genuinely unaware that the girl in question was underage. She's stated in the media on several occasions that, when asked, she lied to him about her true age, so I can see him wriggling out of it on this technicality.

Of course, whether she's lying about lying to him is another matter entirely...

Good news, I reckon – he proved his worth at the World Cup, and this ensures that Germany will have the most sartorially elegant coaching staff for years to come.

Yes, it will be difficult to prove Ribery knew the girl was underage. Any high-powered legal team will be able to get him out of it.

Löw exceeded expectations at the World Cup, at least from an international perspective, so he deserves to keep his job. With such a young squad, he now has the chance to build a team according to his own principles of management. It could prove to be a long relationship.

Eduardo has gone to Shaktar, and Riera appears to be off to Olympiakos - Liverpool bought him for 12 million euros and is selling him for 4-6 million. :(

Interesting move for Eduardo, though Shaktar get regular European football.

Been gone awhile, hope everyone is doing well and all is well.

I think Eduardo is going for a fresh start without fading completely from the european stage so I think the move is a good one. Plus, Wegner allowing him to leave just might underline his expectations of Chamakh, someone I've long admired and excited to see in the EPL.

He should get intouch with R. Kellys legal team.. ;)

Hello there! :)

That Mancini chap's just been on Sky Sports News saying he'd like to sign Landon Donovan for Manchester City. Obviously Landycakes has a fair few fans amongst our American regulars here, so we'll have to see if City make or move or the manager's talk is just bluster.

I imagine James would be expensive; are Celtic ready to pay what he'd cost?
Well, he's a free agent so some of the cash they'd save on a transfer fee could be used to sweeten his wages and signing on fee a little...
