There are things like the 5mp camera Apple could have put in the 3GS but they wouldn't want to make the 'perfect' iPhone or no one would buy the next gen iPhone.

Correct. Apple isn't going to give out everything in the basket at once.

Don't be surprised if the 2010 iPhone gets just a new case and a couple of new features (like the 3G over the original), rather than anything major internally seeing that the 3GS is now plenty fast. They skipped the matte case for the 3GS and it's still enough incentive for many users to cave and upgrade.

I hope they never change the design. That way to people who HAVE to have a new case to consider it a major update will be constantly disappointed.

1. Why?
2. Why? Do you know that I have a 3MP camera that takes better pictures than my 10MP camera? Numbers are MEANINGLESS.
3. No. This will never happen. Radio is century-old tech.
4. Why, so you can show it off that you have the newest?
5. Can't do it; you can't mess with the App Store.

No, none of these features would rock the world.

1. video calling will someday be a normal feature. thats fact. I doubt the next iPhone will have it, or need it, but someday, it'll come
2. agreed. It could do with a better sensor, but just packing numbers into the stats with a crap sensor is a low blow to consumers imo
3. doesn't nike+ work using fm signals? so doesn't it already have one, just not that can currently be used AS fm radio? or maybe I'm wrong (but it doesn't work over wifi or bluetooth, or the old iPhones would have it too...so whats left? AM? infrared?
4. it needs to look new. Leaving it EXACTLY THE SAME 3 years in a row is just dumb. You must see that
5. If they're really locked into a size and resolution because of the app store, thats just sad. What about different macs, all with different resolutions and screen sizes over the years? older app store apps could just run in a 3.5" window, with the rest of the screen left blank (or even better, used for info like time, date, signal, notifications, etc while the app is running). someday, they will have to improve the screen. 3.5" lcd thats 350x480 in 2020? I dont think so

with all the improvements they made on the last one, whats left besides this? 2 straight years of memory/cpu bumping will start to make people wonder what the point of upgrading every year is. At some point id like to be able to SEE that ive upgraded, without having to run an app

I bet that next year's iPhone will be the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet... on the Nations fastest 3G network, AT&T.

Charging while Tethering?

One of the posts on the previous page got me thinking about this...

If you are in a public area such as an airport and using the tethering feature of the iPhone, will the phone charge if the laptop is plugged into a power source? If so, you could tether indefinitely without the phone dying.

I have never owned a phone with a tethering option before, but it sounds like a pretty neat thing.

It is bluetooth. Just like how the previous gen iPhones don't have video recording despite the fact that jailbreaking would enable it, it is a software limitation. They have to do something to make you want to upgrade after all.

First of all, the design changed only a year ago. Second of all, "just because it can" is an invalid argument. The iPhone design is iconic and will only have minor changes from here on out. If you want "different" go buy another phone.

The analogy about Macs doesn't work because Mac OSX is a multi-threaded environment, whereas the iPhone is single-threaded. Although it is possible to increase the size of the screen and place all older applications in a smaller window, it won't be done because it makes the software, and therefore the phone, feel old and outdated, inconsistent with Apple's new and sleek desire. If anything is to happen, a newer iPhone will have a higher resolution screen in the same size as the current one. Older applications could change the resolution of the device to fill the same physical space as older phones, while allowing the newer applications to use higher quality graphics.

Just because you can't think of anything, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Processor bumps and battery efficiency gains will come with every generation, but new features will make their way onto the iPhone. I follow a lot of futuristic techs and some of them will make their way into phones within the next few years if they haven't already started. These technologies include, but not limited to, built-in projectors, 3D image projection, video calling, peer-to-peer range extension, and more. Technology is rarely revolutionary and only the first iPhone will be in the list of revolutionary iPhones.

Right, so by the time the new iPhone (4G, or whatever) comes out it will have had the same design for 2 years. If they keep it again, it would make it 3 years (assuming the new iPhone keeps on the yearly update).

I would agree that they need to change the design. That is probably one of the reasons they kept the iPod so popular was by refreshing the cases. They never started from scratch and built a new iPod, just minor tweaks here and there to keep people happy.

I myself would be a little disappointed if three iPhones in a row looked exactly the same.

in regards to screen size - i read apple thought about this and apps are scalable...
