60 Celsius while watching video is way better than my 85 degrees! Maybe I7 is cooler or maybe your thermal paste is just better.

Or maybe you are sitting outside in the snow? ;)

How'd you guess ?

Haha no just sitting on my desk. Room temp is 22°C to be precise ;)

If the I7 runs cooler in general than i5, then I'm sending it back and getting i7.

Good if somebody else with 13" i7 could post temp results so we can see if it is an i5 issue.

I got the i7 13", and my temps are (sorry, no clue how to take a screenshot)

HD : 37C
CPU : 64C
Enclosure base: 38C
Enclosure base 2: 38C
Enclosure base 3: 38C
Heatsink B: 48C
Mem Bank A1: 47C

Fan : 2002 rpm

I'm currently watching a movie on VLC, having Messenger open and Safari and another program.
Also, the mac is on my comforter so I dont know if it could be affecting the temps ?

Also, I do have to say that thing IS loud, my brother was using Team Viewer yesterday to help me set up the mac and boy, something the fan (or HDD?) would go crazy (as if hearing a blowdryer from another room).

EDIT : I'm also on battery (trying to calibrate it).

It's always loud when you set it up because OSX is building the index for spotlight (the search function on the top right corner of your screen). It usually calms down when the process is over.

Oh and btw, if you want to take a screenshot, press CMD+SHIFT+3 to take the whole screen, or CMD+SHIFT+4 for parts of it.

And I recently discovered that if you press CMD+SHIFT+4, then hit the space bar it lets you select just one window for the shot. Genius !

Mine was 58c (firefox) and mines an i5, it's just that video that doesn't work too well on safari and chrome. Nothing to worry about

It can't be the fan if it is only 2000rpm. I can't hear my fan at that speed. I only notice it past 3500rpm, and it's really loud at 6200rpm when playing SCII ;)

testing something...disregard this post.

*EDIT: sorry...thought I could delete the post after my little test was complete. A mod can delete this.

Well, I dont know what the temps and rpms were yesterday, but sometimes for 3 seconds it would just go crazy and then no more?
We were using Team Viewer and Skype (no video), and installing a few programs.
I will test a game (sims) later on, should I expect this loud sound then ?

An Apple service provider checked out my MBP this afternoon and declared it DOA. Apparently the noise is caused by a stalling fan and a noisy, faulty HDD.
My mystery is solved. They'll give me a new one tomorrow. I'll definitely check that one at the store and have them test it too!!

Mine is whisper quiet unless doing something intensive which kicks the fans on.

THE HDD noise is still annoying me.anyone else had theirs fixed? It's a humming noise from the right bottom next to the ttackpad.

Given the title of the thread (2010 vs. 2011), I'll just say that my 2010 MBP 13" has that *exact* noise/hum/vibration coming from the hard drive. Annoying! (Mine was built in December 2010)

I don't feel like going through the hassle/risk of having Apple work on it, and I can always use another backup drive, so I'm thinking I will just replace the hard drive.

Now I am just trying to figure out which one to get... Seems all the various models are inconsistent in whether they are noisy or not, so I can't decide on one.

I know SSD would be silent, but 120gb would be a pinch for me and I don't know that I need the speed/$/size trade-off right now.

Here are a couple to consider:

I was just reading in another thread that *some* of the Scorpio blacks have an issue in relation to the Apple SMS. They gave a specific four-letter code (like how that one is BEKT). Let me see if I can find that....

Edit: Okay, that was apparently the older, BJKT model. The newer ones apparently do have some motion-something but it does not interfere with SMS like the other one. Here is the thread for future reference:

So, I'm all ears if anyone has experience with both of those, or can comment on the features, benefits, or negative points of the blue vs. the black. The blue sure gets good reviews on Amazon (so does the black, but not as many and not quite as good). They are close enough in price that it doesn't matter to me. Mainly, I want it *quiet* and without the vibration of the whole palm rests/trackpad (which I'm pretty sure would go away if it were quiet/smooth).

Another edit: This kit looks interesting. It's the OWC Mercury on the GO USB/FW enclosure, plus a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb drive, plus some tools. The idea is that you buy this kit, put your current MBP hard drive in it to use for an external drive, and then put the new WD Scorpio Blue in your MBP. It's about $108. They have many others with different drives, different enclosures, etc.

Anyone have any experience with OWC and returns? I'm hearing about so much variation in the noise level of individual drives (of the same exact type) that I would want to be able to easily return/exchange if I got a noisy one. I know that would probably be a breeze with Amazon, but I do like the Mercury enclosure, plus it's not a bad looking package deal (and I would need another enclosure).

Doesn't sound right to me. I'm on mine now and cannot hear anything unless I put my ear up to the laptop in which case I can faintly hear the fan running.
