People don't realize that you are not required to do anything. You can keep using your machine. Now if your seagate drive dies and takes your data with it, don't expect special treatment from Apple aside from warranty repair.
Any particular reason why you all tossed your boxes when you knew this was a heavy, awkward machine? And you knew you may have to take it in some day? sounds dumb to me..

If you have your box, how can you complain about awkwardness and being compensated??
You all sound like grumpy two year olds.![]()
We were talking about this on the MAc Blog Discussion forum. It's not really that Seagate are now a problem, the ST31000528AS drive which was discontinued in March this year was a very good HDD. Tom's Hardware said it ran cooler, used less power and was quieter then their competition.
1 - Well, the ST31000528AS is one of the drives targeted by this recall, so I don't know how it can be considered "very good".
2 - For those not close to an Apple Store, why don't you just try an Authorized Service Provider? I am gonna do exactly that (much better than driving more than an hour to find the Apple Store).
For those of you considering taking you affected iMac to the Apple Store, I took my 27" in yesterday evening and was told it would be ready for pickup in "24-48 hours".
The interesting part was that the "Genius" had no idea there was a recall on these drives and when I asked if it was safe to assume the replacement drive would not be the same drive model they were removing (seemed like a reasonable question/expectation), he really didn't sound so sure of himself when replying in his Genius, cult-like pleasantness.
I've kept my box around for such an occasion which made transporting the iMac much less scary than without it.
Oh... and the "Genius" said they'd "probably" just put a fresh install of Lion and iLife on the new drive, but he didn't sound to sure about that either.
Can you report back with any updates?
Thanks
This machine is my livelihood. To have to take an entire day to drive 30+ minutes to an Apple store, wait for it to be serviced, back up all my files, re-install all my files/programs, Someone is compensating me in someway. I don't think that is too much to ask. It'd be much quicker to send me out of the store with a brand new machine. This is a fault of theirs and the hdd providers they chose, not mine. I buy something for it to work.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. I received the email last week as well on my machine. I called the Apple Authorized service provider here in town (we don't have an Apple store...yet), and they're aware of the issue and standing by for replacement...I asked if I could provide my own drive. They said "No problem!"...I stopped by Amazon yesterday and picked up a 3TB Seagate XT for $169!! Incredible deal with free shipping and triple the internal capacity. Obviously I could've accepted the "Free" replacement drive from Apple...but like others, I'm a bit nervous to have them open my iMac up. I've had this same shop upgrade another one of my iMac drives in the past (went well, fast, and NO dust or screen issues)...so I'm more confident than others...however, I only want to do this ONE time! Hence, a BIG friggin' drive that I'm going to have a lot of fun filling up! Something to consider...as others have also mentioned, now is the time to put that SSD or bigger HDD in your iMac if they are going to crack it open. YMMV as always
