long time lurker here - i've been saving money to buy the 13" i5 mbp and am a bit scared with all the problems happening. is the 13" i5 mbp also freezing all the time? hope to hear from you, it's taken me months to save. thanks!

No. In fact that model is having the fewest issues by far.

Im kind or of lost how can it be 220%. I thought 100% was the maximum.

Are you using istat pro

Either it says that due to turbo boost making the grew higher than normal quad speeds or it is maxing 2 of the cores and utilizing part of the third one. If it's not either then I am at a loss.

Each core (that includes each logical core created by hyperthreading) counts as 100%. So the new MBPs can go up to 800%.

I thought it was to do with that but what is the program you are using to monitor it as I am using istat pro and cannot get mine to show the same as yours

1
Open a new Finder window by clicking on the icon in the Dock.

2
Navigate to the "Applications" section of your Mac hard drive.

3
Open the "Utilities" folder within the "Applications" section.

4
Double-click on the "Activity Monitor" icon to launch the utility program.

Chrome, Flash & Discrete Graphics

Regarding the "running cooler for Internet" part:

I have noticed that, before the update, whenever you launch chrome or firefox the graphics card switches to the discrete one, even if you are only on the about:blank page. After the update if you do not visit pages that ostensibly needs a lot of graphics power, the card remains on the integrated one.

In my opinion this is a big improvement in their algorithms for choosing which card to use, especially for those people who do not want to install gfxcardstatus: on my macbook pro the battery barely lasts four hours on the discrete card, but 8 hours, even 9 hours, is not a problem when on the integrated card.

Using gfxCardStatus after the update, I've noticed that in Chrome, once I visit a page with any Flash content, it will still switch to the discrete graphics, even if the flash content is just an ad. However in Safari, it will keep using the integrated graphics after encountering Flash content, even if I'm watching a YouTube video. I haven't searched around much, so I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but is there a way to stop this behavior in Chrome, other than forcing the integrated graphics via gfxCardStatus? Is this behavior an "issue" with Chrome?

iStat Pro can display activity on all 8 logical cores.

Thanks but i wanted to know what that app is called as it gives a percentage out of 800%

Hyperthreading is not the same as physical processor in terms of efficiency. No matter what iStat shows.

Mine crashed

2.0 6490M - Crashed after about 30 seconds of running SETI@Home (using processors and GPU). Temperature according to SMC FanControl was 91° C before it locked up. Mouse froze, nothing responsive.

has this been fixed yet? has apple said anything about it? Im on 10.6.7 with a 15" MBP, and I cant use my 24in monitor at work because of this.

This is absolutely ridiculous....

10.6.7 fixed the issue. What do you mean can't use the monitor? If your computer freezes every time you connect do a re-install of SL and upgrade to 10.6.7 if that doesn't work then contact Apple for tech support, be it software or hardware.

10.6.7 certainly did not fix this issue. There are plenty of people on apple's support forum who are still complaining of issues. My external 24in apple monitor will continue to flicker on and off. I am currently on 10.6.7 with what is essentially a 2 week old laptop.

This thread is about the machines freezing under heavy load, not flickering.

it's understated when this problem has been described as "does not perform under load"!(I own 2011 15"mbp 500gb 4gb ram and quadruble core whatnot inside)
i do have the same problem as above and i only have safari and itunes running .. if i then open rar expander the whole computer freezes to one block..

That is not what i call "under load"!
The last time i experienced this was with an old windows crappy thing ..and that took a hell lot more then using i tunes and internet browser!
anyhow.. whats with those who use their mbp for finalcut and photoshop ?
its just dawn frustrating..

i guess apple will be contacted from me as well..
i think its pathetic to pay 4000 bucks and having this happening after three weeks. especially after converting to mac for the first time..

4gb of ram have to handle more c'mon

Have you upgraded to 10.6.7?

Been looking for an excuse to buy my 1st Apple product (MBP) for a while. Converts tell me how technically superior to PCs they are. When Apple release a MBP that won't fry an egg and doesn't create threads like this I'll throw my $ down. Disappointing as I want try an Apple.

2011 MBP's are fine. Not hot, and super-fast.
