Yes, the firmware is an important thing to note for those OCZ vertex 3 drives. You should attach it to a windows tower and update the firmware if it hasn't been flashed yet to the most recent version.

Crucial released a new firmware for their M4s that seems to make a difference. For everyone else (including non Crucial users) I suggest to try the HDAPM hack provided in the Crucial forum. It keeps the SSD from going into LPM Slumber state.

Come to the OCZ Forum !!! and read the link

Hi,

I have created a thread in the OCZ forums with the vertex3 issues that macbook pro 2011 users have with sata3. If anyone has a sata3 ssd (does not have to be ocz vertex3 please feel free to have a look)

we want as many macbook pro 2011 17" especially owners to see the thread and see if they have similar problems worth adding to so I can send this to my technical advisor at apple to try to sort this out.

Since OCZ ask their Windows users to turn off LPM you might need the HDAPM hack that keeps OS X from issuing LPM Slumber.

You can find it in the Crucial forum. Actually you can find two different ones, one with an installer but without source-code, and one without installer and source-code.

Currently it seems that OS X issues LPM Slumber after 40 ms idle time. Since the M4 firmware update I don't have to use the hack myself anymore though (and LPM on Windows runs fine, too).

Got rid of my Crucial C300 and added an OCZ Vertex 3 instead. It worked without drama. I still did replace the SATA cable which I ordered from ifixit.com as it arrived a few days after I swapped the SSDs. Not sure whether it now makes a difference but I'm too lazy to swap back to the C300. The Vertex 3 is just soooooo much faster. :)

After resetting the PRAM, the MBP now boots up in no time at all. I haven't seen a beach ball, no freezing, no problems waking up from sleep, no nothing. It just works. As it should... Most frustrating experience ever with a MBP.

Oh, and no. 10.6.8 didn't fix anything for me. There was no change after the upgrade with the C300.

EFI Update 2.2

Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1450) seems to have resolved the SATA III issues I was experiencing. My 2011 17" MBP now runs rock solid on an Intel SATA III SSD. No more beach balling or occasional hangs. I even re-enabled TRIM and spotlight. Prior scenarios that would freeze the system now work very smoothly.

The issue seems to be resolved with the EFI Firmware Update 2.2.

I am sorry to report that this is not true, at least on the 17" model. My one was purchased in march 2012, with the latest firmware and EFI, and it does not work with my Corsair Performance Pro 256GB SSD...
I just ordered the replacement (a one-year-old OCX Vertex-2). It seems that we need to wait for the next lineup of the 17" model, probably in autumn 2012, for having true SATA-3 support on these larger MBP....
Of course, hoping that Apple does not decide to remove the optical bay at all, which would impede to employ the dual-disk configuration which I need (SSD on the main bay, the original 750GB hd for mass storage in the optical bay)...
Anyone has news about the design of the next-generation 17" machines?
Will they be "airized" too, or will Apple leave us something usable for professional applications?
