what's wrong with toshiba SSD's? I mean I would prefer a samsung SSD over a toshiba one because I know samsung as a company makes good quality products, but I wouldn't go exchange my MBA just because it has a toshiba SSD instead of a samsung...

The Samsung SSD is remarkable faster than the Toshiba ones... ;)

Which display would be considered the best?

Samsung displays are the better ones, but tbh both are high quality laptop displays.

If I remember correctly the main differences is with the viewing angles, with the Samsung offering better vertical angles.

I really wouldn't worry though. The MBA screens are the best I've seen on a laptop, especially in the 13".

But can you say which build numbers to look for?

Unfortunately I can't remember the right numbers to look out for.

I'm sure there'll be some threads on here based on the 2010 Air's, which will still be valid as the screens used in the 2011 models are the same as last years.

If you are spending 2k on a laptop after tax and applecare, it better have the parts you want. Apple putting in the older and slower Toshiba drives in some models would make me want to return it. I'm giving you a ton of money for not that much power at least be decent enough to give me the better drive or standardize the cheaper drive.

I care about having the best parts in my machine, but to me it's not something worth returning and rebuying over. I just want to get started using a Mac.

True, but for me I would like for the MBA to last me at least 3 years of everyday use, and I would like to get the best. I mean you'll be spending at least 3000 hours on a laptop over three years. A slight improvement on viewing angles and slightly faster SSD performance is worth it.

On a side note, if the SSD fails and Apple replaces it, would you be able to choose Samsung or Toshiba?

I wonder if the decision to go back to the crappy toshiba drives is the Apple/Samsung android spat? Either case I really hope mine comes with a Samsung drive as the Toshiba's even lack basic native command queing which can help in Win7 performance

That would be a good reason if they all were Toshiba and no Samsung, but there is just a mix of the two with no rhyme or reason.

SM256C

LUCKY!
I really thought after leaving DellHell, I would be leaving the laptop component lottery! Dell is a major crapshoot as their screens can vary widely within the same model.

I understand your pain. what is the actual difference between the two drives makes?

Why worry about this, when you can upgrade to an SSD from OWC that's both bigger and better? Is Apple soldering the SSD in now after all?

Congrats, that appears to be a Samsung panel!

Thanks - I didn't realize that there were differences in the components until today. I guess that's what happens when you're not in the market to buy a new laptop, you stop paying attention to the details. Apparently I lucked out.
