That looks very similar to what happened to my 2010 MBP after I dropped it (while it was open ) in a Speck hardshell. They have since replaced the display assembly and topcase (where any noticeable damage was) for dust under the glass, and because the control key was non functioning. The marks that both the OP and I have/had are the result of stress being put on the aluminum.

Edit: and yeah, it had to catch the light just right to be seen.

But you see unlike you, I have not dropped or mistreated the computer in any way. It has not left my desk and it's literally barely been used.

Return it, it takes a decent amount of force to stress the aluminum *plus* no one has mentioned how a future warranty repair might be denied if Apple cites the stress mark as user damage.

My MBA got a similar mark (longer maybe 2") on the lid after an idiot re-opened a normal full overhead compartment on a flight and stuffed his baggage in as well.

I (sort of) did.

Each year when I get my new MBP, I carefully unpack it, remove the plastic wrapper, and inspect it before I do anything else.

Every one has had some type of _small_ (5mm or less) imperfection in the aluminum finish. As long as it's not right where I would have to look at it while using the computer, I do not return it. After all, trying to get a perfect one, unless you're really lucky, is next to impossible.

Last year, I had the exact same marks on mine as the one here in the photos.

Running your fingernail across what appeared to be scratches revealed they were purely cosmetic as nothing could be felt. Yet the section affected was 30mm wide by 73mm long, so it was large enough to be very noticeable from certain angles. As luck would have it, the worst was sitting like you would when using it.

A BTO unit, I called Apple and they sent an RMA email so I could return it. This is one area of Apple Operations that has always been good to work with. The drawback is you have to start all over and have enough room on your credit card to approve the second computer. (I did).

This leaves one in the position of returning one & waiting for them to confirm the problem, write a report to the billing department requesting you get a credit. This process takes between three and six weeks depending on their work load.

Typically they are busiest when new models are released which is when I order.

Long story short. The 2nd was worse, the 3rd was a disaster, finally the forth was also marked but on the bottom.

Whatever this is Apple has yet to fix it. I had it on my 2010 & 2011 which just arrived this morning.

I'm not sure I have the patience this time. However it's right on the top where you rest your wrists, & is very noticeable, which I know will be a problem when it's time to sell it next year.

Especially since the rest of the computer will look new. I take exceptional care of my Apple gear.

I think he is kinda on your side with this. His point is that it could be a stress fracture caused by a fall (at the factory) and if that's the case you actually have an issue

If it isnt a fracture and is just an actual scratch then you have to decide if it's worth going through the trouble of sending it back and waiting for a replacement to be shipped. No way they're going to lose instore stock over a small surface scratch

That's actually exactly what they did. They replaced my perfect working computer with just a surface scratch with a brand new sealed one today from instore stock... Apple ROCKS :D
