I am having odd issues with the second HDD in my 2011 Mini Server. I ordered the upgraded version (7200 RPM 750 GB) and I was quite pleased to find WD Scorpio Black drives. I replaced the top HDD with an OCZ Vertex 3, which has been working without any issues. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the HDD.

I have this drive formatted in exFAT, which has not caused me any issues before and I use it for a lot of other disks. The other HDD that I took out is now sitting in an OWC enclosure and I use it to back up the HDD left in the mini. It is also formatted with exFAT and does not give me any issues.

Basically the partition on the HDD left in the server just disappears every couple of days. I can run Verify Disk in Disk Utility and it will repair it with no data loss, but this is annoying. As I said, the HDD sitting in the external enclosure does not experience this issue.

    Has anyone seen something similar?

No but I do have the same machine. I can make a partition on one internal hdd say 100gb in exFAT monitor it and let you know in a week or 2 what happens to it.

I would appreciate that. I only notice this when I shutdown or restart.

I will set it up tonight. I emptied my one 750gb drive. and will set a 750 gb exfat leave it idle for a week and see what happens; see thumbnail.

I just shut it down so I will check it later tonight. I am on the other mini for now.

As Philip correct pointed out, I do indeed use Windows on this machine via bootcamp. It's very convenient to have a drive that both operating systems can see and write to without 3rd party drivers. I've never had any issues with exFAT and I use it on a lot of external drives and USB sticks.

The other day the issue appeared when I rebooted into windows, which is quite fascinating, but does not bring me any closer to finding a reason why this is happening. I suppose I should do a full SMART test to make sure the HDD is ok. It doesn't happen with the other HDD that I took out and is now in an external enclosure connected via FW800.

Thanks mate. I am not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing if you manage to reproduce this issue. :)
