I'm not sure the Rays have a chance, but the Yankees are in trouble unless they pull out a miracle with their starting rotation. Even IF Burnett has a career year, their 1-5 won't be anywhere close to the best. Throw in an aging/overrated infield defense and age/durability questions with Jeter/A-Ro(i)d etc and I think it's fair to say the Yanks are anything but a lock for this year.
Cano and Texiera are far from over rated. They are both the best at their position. Sabathia lost 30 pounds Burnett seems to have his head on straight. I wonder what Hughes will give this year but I doubt he will suck. We have a great back end to the bullpen.

Cano and Texiera are good, yes. But you're conveniently ignoring the other half of the infield, Jeter in particular. He simply has no range. Still your #4/5 starters are big questionmarks at best, and that's assuming that a) Burnett gets his act together and b) Hughes can keep up the pace. Both possible, sure. But there are better solid rotations out there....not to mention that Sabathia is arguably not even a top 5 starter, period. Cahill, Felix Hernandez, Verlander, and Price are absolutely better, and you could make an argument for others, too. Take away Sabathia's fantastic run support and he's still good, but nowhere close to the top.

Pitching and run support go together, Felix is a great pitcher on a bad team so his numbers are lower. Lets look at the AL East, I don't think the Red Sox pitching is much better than the Yankees, Take Lester and Buckholtz out and who do they have? Beckett is iffy at best and Dice K has no confidence. Sabathia is a horse. On a bad day he will still pitch better than most. Run support is just as important as a good pitcher.

Statistically they had the best defense in the league last year. Jeter doesn't have the range he did 10 years ago, but I'd take their infield over anyone else's.

As far as starting pitching is concerned, that is the biggest question mark. Though if the bullpen shakes out like it is expected to, we can have a shut down 7th, 8th, and 9th inning guy. Having to scrape 6 innings instead of 8 will definitely take some heat off the starters..especially the back end of the rotation.

Run support is as important as a good pitcher, agreed. Run support is completely independent of the pitcher, however--at least in the American League, the pitcher has no control over his run support (and minimal input in the NL). Independent of run support, Sabathia's stats do not measure well against the top pitchers in the league.

What stat is that? I presume you're not using fielding percentage alone. (Doesn't work due to being based on error rate, which completely ignores range--thus Jeter appearing to be good [he does very well with the balls he gets too, but far too many get by him])

It is fielding percentage. They also had the fewest amount of errors in baseball. Is it a complete measuring stick of a defense? No. Are there variables that aren't being measured? Yes. Like range, turf vs. natural grass, etc..The stats they use certainly don't tell the whole story, but they still tell a good portion of it.

If the Red Sox best pitchers can't win what does that say about the rest of the team.:D

Ugly game one for the Giants at Dodger Stadium yesterday. Lincecum was not sharp, Kershaw's control was dialed in, the defense was shaky. Two more or less gifted runs was all it took.

Even worse, a couple of Dodger fans decided they wanted to attack a group of fans wearing Giants gear in the parking lot after the game, leaving one of the Giants fans in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Stay classy, LA!

I could have gone to bed happy, but for this.

WTF is wrong with these alleged "fans". I don't believe for a moment that they qualify for this title.

Meanwhile, in other news, the Jays are beating the Twins, in the Jay's sold-out home opener.

Interesting to note...

Jason Heyward's first at bat, first swing as a rookie last season on opening day - HR
His first at bat, second swing this year on opening day - HR

Chipper looked good... doubled in the first and legged it out, scored on a hit by McCann

Rookie Freddy Freeman made some good pickups at first

Lowe was strong and the bullpen tight
2-0 win for the Bravos

Gonna be a fun season

Got to love this... end sarcasm. It is as bad as going to a freaking Raider game and wearing the wrong shirt. I can say most fans are good, but well there is also lots of riff raft at the park! Drunk riff raft at that.

Im watching the Dodgers game and I don't think Miles ever touched the bag.

Went to the Phils home opener yesterday and was greeted with a walk-off win:cool: I love watching Doc pitch :) The middle relief is scary:eek: But a win a win. I've been in hockey mode all winter:cool: It's really nice to see baseball back in Philly;)

how bout them redlegs? what a crazy start to the season with a three run walk off homer. first opening day win since 2007, cause aaron harang sucks.

should be a good season for the reds.

Lost opening game to the Dodgers and with our pitcher who was the strikeout leader last season. I swear, like football, any team can beat any other and you could never falter for a second. We come in defending WS champs and then get beat by LA. Painful.

It looks like we can actually win today against them and we are up 8-0 in the 6th.

The Rangers are looking good to be beating up on the supposedly best team in the AL.

yeah lets not judge a season after 2 games with 160 left to go. come talk to me around the all star break.
