Hmmm, I can't seem to reproduce it now. Either it changed to 2-4 and has since changed back, or the browser on my work laptop was extremely slow to update when I clicked the radio button for SSD. Could've sworn it showed the SSD option and 2-4 days, but who knows. Sorry for the false alarm!

No false alarm mate, I've seen that too. But only, if I selected the HDD+SSD option.

I think apple has made decision that imac 21.5" will use the current SATA2 SSD while decide to put a new sub 30nm SATA3 SSD for its higher end model? :) But that doesn't really make sense....

No it doesn't and would be marketing suidide. The 21.5 and 27 are idenical other than the screen size, extra thunder bolt port and better GPU.

The i7 2600S is more expensive than the i7 2600 as far as CPU goes. By about 80 US dollars. It is not a inferior processor. Since it uses far less power, in my opinion it is superior. Most of the speed while using far less power. So they don't really put " all better' parts in just the 27. I am a power user and there is little difference between the imac 21.5 i7 2.8 and the 27 i7 3.4 as far as raw power is concerned other than GPU performance for gaming.

The reason Apple finally provided users with some serious options on par with the 27 model is that the 21.5 model was Apple greatest selling imac. Not the 27. Not everyone wants a 27 inch screen or needs Apple's 27 Inch screen because I already have one. Do they make a 64 GB ipad inferior to a 16Gb model? No they do not.

No one knows the reasoning behind Apples delay for the SSD imacs, but butting a differenct SSD in one model instead of another one has nothing to do with what you are saying. Maybe something technical as power draw? Who knows. We will know in about ten days at least some answers.

People fail to realize money has nothing to do with it at this price point. I spent $2500 for the 21.5 BTO. That is more than a custom 27 i7 without SSD. I have no use for a 27 display since I look forward to using the newer and better displays ahead and currently use a 27 Cinema Display in dual screen mode. I am not the only one doing this. Most professionals use better screens than what is on the 27 imac for work purposes. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the best display on the market. ;)

I don't see any particular reason for Apple to use different SSDs, but I also don't think it would affect marketing much. Apple doesn't actually say anything about the SSDs you'll be getting other than the size. Apple certainly doesn't guarantee that similar things between the 21.5" and 27" iMac are completely identical unless otherwise noted, just that they'll meet the specs Apple provides.

The only reason to speculate that the SSDs might be different is that there is very little else that would explain the large gap in shipping times between the 21.5" and 27" models.

Is Apple really shipping such an enormous number of BTOs that it needs to stagger the release? That seems extremely unlikely.

So different SSDs seems somewhat more plausible in the absence of any other plausible explanations.

But, still, on the whole I think that the most likely explanation is no explanation--the two models will ship with the same SSDs, and we'll never figure out why this delay existed.

In which case, here's hoping the 21.5" models that ship next week have SATA3 drives in them!

Grrr that's frustrating. Just got off the phone with an Apple rep just to see if I could squeeze any new info out of them. All she would do is give me some generic response that, "since it's built to order, those machines come from China so it takes longer."

Of course I said, "umm, just wondering why all the other options BESIDES the SSD bump the shipping time by 1-2 days, whereas the SSD makes it jump to 4-6 weeks. She says the same darn thing, "yeah, because it's custom built in China."

Have to say that's really irritating. Usually my experience with Apple reps is they at least understand your question even if they don't know the answer. Wish they would inform their employees a little better. Curious - those who posted that a rep told them something different, did you have to ask for a manager or anything?

I dare everyone else who's waiting to call and ask, so we can see what responses we can generate as a group lol...

Take it from someone who owns and operates a marketing firm. Trust me, everything effects marketing. Down to the smallest detail. If they used different SSD's, the buying public will know about it. As everything else. Even this site is considered' news'. Small news has the potential to make bigger news.

With that being said, I was not referring to the SSD itself, but just in general of using inferior materials or components in the 21.5 as opposed to the 27 model. to do so would be marketing suicide.

Agreed. People are missing that both models charge the same price for the same drive. To make one gimped would be a huge mistake. Even if they lowered the price to the people who got a 21" screen, that would be a huge mistake too because when the machine was purchased, the person did not have the choice to change their mind based on all the information. So instead they're shipped a machine they may not have wanted given the option.

Apple is NOT giving the 27" anything more than the 21" is getting. Period. It's no doubt a supply constraint and more people buy 21" machines. You want to make the most people happier faster.

We'll probably start seeing machines get shipped out next week. I am also impatient and wish mine had come already, but there's nothing we can do. But try not to kid yourself into thinking you're getting anything special. You're gonna get the machine you setup on their website and paid for. No more no less :D

Agreed. Btw, SiskoKid, I see in your sig that you went with 16GB of RAM. I only went with 8 GB. Is there much of a performance difference? The only intensive thing I do is gaming... Our setups are identical otherwise.

I do a lot of After Effects work which can get hugely RAM intensive. But in general use, and gaming use, 8GB of Ram is more than fine. I'm also a gamer, so you really don't need more.

Besides, if you ever feel RAM is bottlenecking you in any way, upgrading it is super cheap if you go through somewhere like OWC or Newegg.

I maintain my position that Bob Mansfield hugs every iMac that comes off the line, and it takes longer to hug the 27s.

As for RAM, additional memory provides 0 performance benefit if you're not actually using it. Some people do things that require a ton of RAM, so not using it means that you end up having the operating system page to disk instead (which is at least 1000 times slower than memory) and the performance impact is very real. Buy only what you need -- if you need more later, it'll be cheaper later than it is now.

Without actual sales data in hand I think this is a difficult claim to make.

I think it's just as likely that folks who pony up the money for an SSD are more likely to pony up the money for the 27" iMac. In other words, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find that there are more 27" SSD-equipped iMacs ordered than 21" SSD-equipped iMacs. Heck, you can't even get the base 21" iMac with a factory-equipped SSD.

They are charging the same prices for the upgrades - if they offer lower specs for the 21 at the same upgrade price there will be complaints and returns.

Yes. But the 21" owner will only know it 4 weeks later once 27" is shipped.
What's the return policy then?

The current MBAs had their SSDs changed mid-cycle. New ones are about 15% faster in real-world use.

I haven't heard of a large number of angry users demanding reparations from Apple.

We are not talking about the imac BTO with SSD. And you are probably right there may be more SSD equipped 27 models. We are saying the 21.5 model, without BTO or stock outsell the 27 models. Actually the base 21.5 is the best selling imac out of the bunch.

We that being said, the 21.5's may well outsell the 27 even with the SSD option. No one knows.

You guys need to stop with the 21.5 getting inferior parts or drives. Makes no sense. Isn't going to happen and there is no reason for it. The only difference between the models is the screen size, extra thunderbolt port. Thats it. Internally they are the same, same motherboard, HD's, memory everything. The stock imacs use the same HD's. Same motherboards, same everything. Stop with the conspiracy theories already.

Like I said, the i7 in the 21.5 model is more expensive CPU than the i7 in the 27 model. Whatever SSD ships in the 21.5 model will be shipping in the 27 model. Same SSD, same features, same everything. For all we know both models will ship at the same time. Ever think of that? The shipping times are "approximate' not guaranteed.

As for the Air, they changed manufacturers for a same product, not put a inferior part "at the same time' for two different size imacs to people who waited weeks for their imacs to be built. No comparison to be made. Like comparing apples and oranges.

I think this all has to do with production batching. They built all standard configs before the release and didn't start the SSD BTO/CTO until the public release.

Then Apple waits till a certain number of SSD iMacs are ordered, then changes the production line. This could be 5000, 10000, etc... who knows.

All of these iMacs are being shipped via boat to the US which will take 25-40 days.

I hope the delay is for a much better reason but I doubt it.

Ding ding ding. .................

We have a winner! That is most likely what is happening here. Just a simple supply and demand issue.

That's not even near the same thing. I won't even bother trying to explain the HUGE difference in situations.

If you really think the 27" is getting anything special, you're absolutely out of your mind.

Just to answer that question about getting a manager or not: I got a very kind person for the business sales staff in Belgium to answer all of my emails. So only possible differences with you guys are:

- I ordered my computer via the online business store
- I am in contact with a Belgian (or French maybe) sales rep, not an American one

Can't wait for this damn iMac to arrive :)

Are you sure about this? Everytime I've ordered an Apple product that has shipped from China, it has taken 4-5 days tops from the time it departs China via FedEx. Pretty sure that's via airplane.
