there is no question the 13 mba is apples best 13 inch laptop.

Uh, yes, there is. For me, having owned both, the 13" Pro is substantially better than the Air. Firewire, ethernet, more storage, faster, expandable - it's just a much more capable laptop, and is quite a bit less expensive.

As I've said before, the Air commands a lot more money to give you . . . less.

I recently faced this same decision, and ended up going with the 13" MBP. The lower resolution didn't really bother as much as the washed-out looking screen on the Air did. I added 8GB of RAM (try THAT in your Air! :)) and a 128GB SSD, and it was still cheaper than a 13" Air. And my graphics memory went from 384MB to 512MB. Oooohh!! Ahhh!!

I also don't get the complaints about the weight. The 13" feels tiny and lightweight to me. Then again, I was using a 17" Powerbook and a 15" Dell brick.

Sad part is my boss bought a shiny new loaded 13" MBA and doesn't even know how to bookmark things or export bookmarks from his iMac to his MBA.

What a nifty laptop going to waste.

I'm not buying another laptop any time soon, but my choice between an Air and a Pro really depends on ...

1. Does the Air have Ethernet?
2. Does the Air have at least 8GB DDR3 RAM?
3. Does the Air have enough processing power?
4. Price?

1. No. You can get Ethernet via a USB adapter, however.
2. No. 4GB RAM is the max.
3. It depends.
4. 13 inch with 4GB RAM, 1.7 GHz dual-core i7, 128GB Flash-SSD, and IHD3000 graphics for $1,299. Upgrade to a 256Gb Flash-SSD for $1,599, or 256GB and 1.8 GHz i7 for $1,699.

For $100 more than a $1,699 max-spec'd MBA, you could get a 15-inch MBP with a 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 4GB 1333MHz RAM,, 500GB HDD, IHD3000 Graphics + AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB GDDR5.

there is no question the 13 mba is apples best 13 inch laptop. the question becomes would you still buy a 15/17 over 13 mba and what will happen at the 15 size in 2012.

I'd have to disagree with you. I have the 13" MBP and find that that ports and optical drive make it better.

You can rephrase your statement and say its the best for you, but not the best overall, period.

I have different needs and well, those needs include more ports ;)

No way would I choose the MBA over the 13" Pro. I've had both and stuck with the Pro, can handle running Win 7 and os/x same time in virtual system doing various things with no slow down or heat build up like the MBA. Even watching movies on the MBA it would get much hotter. And battery life on the MBA wasn't as good when traveling, namely when watching movies on a plane.

I only have one issue with the 13" Pro, hate that they don't offer antiglare screen like the 15/17.

I am not sure how anecdotal evidence points to a widespread problem. I've been carrying my MBA in a backpack with another laptop for about 6 months now and I don't have this problem. There are hundreds of thousands of people that also don't have this problem.

If something happens on the internet, it is true!

how about the statement mba is the future of the notebook?

My mom picked a Pro over the Air. If you go by specs only, really, the MBA is all she would have needed, but she didn't like the fact that you can't upgrade it in the future. She's a first-time Mac user, too.

Just so you all know, The result are pretty much clear.

MBA or MBP in the MBA Forum

The only thing that matters here, is what forum you decide to post a question like this in.

I saw the other poll in the mba forum and I am surprised. The mba offers a good alternative to the mbp. You would not see this type of thing in a macbook vs macbook pro. It shows how popular the air has become.

It will be interesting what happens in 2012 with apples notebooks. The fans, heat, optical drive, regular hard dive of the pro make my like the air.

agonised for ages about buying the 13" air or 13" pro , in the end went with the pro and don't regret it, although the air is beautiful light and slim , the lack of upgradable ram and hard drive , finally persuaded me, I don't mind the bit of extra weigh with the pro if it means I can upgrade it in the future and get a couple more years life out of it.:)

why not? MBP would win just for the simple fact that it is newer. even among people who like the old white and black ones I'm sure given the option to trade it for a new one with a minimal upgrade fee, most would. that's what it's all about to most people. if it's newer, its faster and nicer. oooh look shiny!

I loved the Air when I had it, but a few things made me come back top the MBP:

1. I need at least 500 GB
2. Even at 40+ years, I still like to play games and the 6750m is light years better than an Intel IGP.
3. The MBP has about double the battery life.

The MBP is good enough to have me considering selling my Mac Pro (which is faster, but not by much).

IMO the 900p screen is reason enough right there.

But the 13" MBP has outstanding battery life. If they were to drop the optical, increase the battery with the saved space, and add 900p screen I think it would be the best business notebook period IMO.

I never really liked using the 13" Macbook Pros or Airs because it just didn't rest well on my lap. Maybe for women it works better.

it seems that the pros do have better battery. anyone else agree?
