I looked over at my imac today and the screen was leaning forward. So I went to put it back and the whole screen is floppy like there is no spring or something. It doesn't stay upright anymore :(

It's just the weirdest thing nobody touched it or moved it or anything. It's like the spring just died. Does anyone know of anything I could try or know if its fixable without taking the whole thing apart.

I'm sorry for my poor memory, but I do recall reading either a thread on this very subject in the last few weeks on MacRumors or another apple enthusiasts site. There are several homebrew solutions to wedge something behind the screen and stand, and also there was a seller who had designed a neat solution. I'm tied up now but will try and recall the details and post again, but do a bit of googling and you will more than likely find the same info that I found. Apparently it is a bit of a known issue and can happen unexpectedly and without external causes as per your experience.

    Cheers,
    Rich

No worries, search "apple imac hinge failure" or "repair" or "replacement" there are loads of resources and a few elegant and "relatively" inexpensive fixes if apple won't fess up and help you out of warranty, which they might do as this is a known issue. Best of luck mate.

wow nice thanks for the link Rmonster. I ordered a plastic clip someone invented on ebay but if apple will fix it maybe I will bring it down to them.

This was the most basic homebrew fix but in the absence if Apple stepping up to the plate then there was a third party seller offering a nifty adjustable insert at a reasonable cost. I will find it for you tomorrow.

Damn it, yes, ebay was where I saw that insert. But coincidentally enough, another sagging screen thread has just resurrected in this forum a few moments ago so have a look as I'm sure that the research has been done already and that you will get the best advice.

    All the best, Rich

I knew I wasn't going mad :) The above links to the latest page of the thread but maybe read through from the beginning. Looks good for a deserved free repair. Good luck mate.
