No one? I don't want a disc drive and I want it to be thinner.

It'a 2012, not 2006.

Contrary to Apple's marketing, disk drive is still a must. I had to install 150 GB worth of software on my iMac(Native instruments and Apple Logic Pro). Good luck installing those with a USB 2.0 external dvd drive. Will take you ages!

So, are we guessing that the new iMac will look something similar to a scaled up iPad, in terms of shape, with the curved edges?

Sounds great!

A machine worth 2k and upwards, instead of being a powerful beast is going to be a glorified laptop with laptop components right from the video card to the CPU. Only consolation is the 27 inch screen...

Then people might argue that if you want power then why not go for a Mac Pro.

Not if the TDP of the components are lower. :)

ie, ivybridge and ssd (hopefully)

Still, I liked the G5 design way better. With modern parts, that would run cool and still be super easy to open. The curved back design of the newer iMacs (2005 and later I think) doesn't appeal to me from an aesthetic standpoint either. The iMac G5 had that simple Apple-ish design.

Where did you get this idea from? The newest GTX680m is about the equivalent of a 650Ti for desktops. Your kidding right?

More like closer to a GTX 580. For a laptop, (and even some desktops) that's pretty impressive. In AMD terms, 15% faster than a Radeon HD 7850.

Talk about the most extreme of examples.

Hmm. This is not sounding good. Thinner means more problems with heat, and possibly the loss of the optical drive as others have already predicted. Probably harder to upgrade as well. And more expensive on top of that? No, thank you!

Seriously, Apple's obsession with thin at all costs has got to stop. This is particularly ridiculous with a desktop machine that is not meant to be portable. The only people who care how thin their desktop is (within reason; the current iMac is plenty thin, and could be a half inch or so thicker if that means better thermal management) are those who only look at their computers rather than using them.

Suddenly it's looking more and more like waiting instead of buying months ago was a really bad decision... Refurbs may sell very quickly once these are announced, if as rumored. :(

I hope it is more expensive for a good reason. I have been waiting for the iMac and holding off a PC for ages and to get a rumor that the price is going to hike makes me feel sick for waiting this long for the iMac.

A price hike is better than nothing. And by nothing I mean if it doesnt also come with usb 3 and blueray support then this will be nothing more than a way to make their r&d money back on the first gen machine just like they did with the G4, G5 power macs and first intel macbook pro. Those looked different when they came out but the lower end models were pretty weak and were left out of later os updates. It would be a shock if they put retina screens in these things this soon though.

I wonder when it will be too thin to upgrade the ram and internals like the macbook pros?

I will buy these for my job regardless but for home I think I will look for something more portable.

I think it does come with USB 3.0 from what I read somewhere. Loss of the disk drive seems true.

Apple wants us to buy everything from iTunes. Forcing other vendors to put up their products on the App Store. That 30% cut has spoiled Apple way too much.

Decades from now, I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes will have a iGrocer section to buy your groceries.

I saw a post that said pretty much what I am going to, but I'll chime in anyways

Ever see that "Scorcher 6" preview from tropic thunder? "Here we go again.....again." Well that is happening with Apple and thinner once again which I 100% believe the iMac being impossibly thin is true. I don't care what internals are like now, making it thinner will make it run hotter, there is not enough space for adequate cooling by a long shot. The current model runs a little hot, if anything it should have gained a couple pounds.

A desktop RARELY is going to be moved, so size can be larger if need be. An iMac is not a portable machine. Let's just imagine if they didn't have this dumb idiotic fetish with thin and refreshed the machines by making them slightly larger, with the ability to swap hard drives and RAM still. If they did that I guarantee the same people celebrating how "thin" it is would be saying how "awesome" it would be if they did make it larger for better cooling, better GPU, hard drive more easily replaceable.

People like image of course, but Apple's main selling point and advantage has always been integration and knowing what hardware the software was going on. If the rMBP was the same thickness as the normal MBP's it would have sold the same. I am now 100% sure as well the Mac Pro or so called Pro, redesign will be thinner.....why I have no clue.

I would like to see one day if they went belly up and Ive strolled into Lenovo as an engineer and started spouting a bunch of BS about how the workstations and AIO's from there need to be thinner and get laughed at. Just like when Jobs discovered him and no one was checking out his designs because they were not practical or something of the sort. Same thing.

I hope for a massive defect because of the thinness and a huge recall personally. Serves them right. They need a CEO who can say to everyone "Steve is not here anymore" with no remorse, and fire anyone who will not realize common sense is better than stupid form over function.

Apple I remain disappoint.

Soldered RAM? No thanks!

Removing ODD from desktops serves no purpose other than apple making profit on $79 external disk drive ...

13" MBP looks awesome, last upgradable Mac EVER!

Looks like a laptop hard drive. Which would allow for a much thinner body, but at the expense of a smaller drive capacity.

Laptop hard drives can hold as much as desktop hard drives.

But why no solid state? Too expensive to make standard yet?

Sorry, but this is "Exactly" what is wrong with Apple

If anything should "SHOUT" form over function, making a non mobile desktop computer (that is build for a serious fast task - computing) thinner just for aesthetic reasons, when it makes no difference to the products usefulness is just utterly idiotic.

Are desks collapsing due to the current iMac weight?
Can you get more iMacs on your desk if the shave another few mm off the thickness?
You you sit side on and think, if only the iMac was a bit thinner?
Do you have trouble positioning the iMac on your desk due to it's thickness?

The iMac is "Supposed" to be the General Public's serious computer (not Mac Pro) it's supposed to be technically excellent.

At the moment, due to Apples insistence on form over function it is limited to laptop chip sets as the case is too cramped and will overheat.
Internal components run HOT, yes they are within tolerance, but still hotter than they need to run. And all heat does is shorten the lifespan of electronics.

Some have suggested the constant yellow screen issues that have plagued the iMas for years is down to the heat/cramped conditions the screen has to sit within.

It just seem crazy to make something, technically worse for visual sake, esp when on a desktop the thickness is a non issue.

An iPhone and iPad and iPod all have to be limited technically in what they can do due to practical size and weight limitations, that is obvious.

An iMac should not be deliberately burdened by those limitations.
Do you really want iMacs always constricted to be not as good as they could be? Perhaps, who knows, even glued together to save that extra 0.5mm?

Tim Cook is probably laughing at how much rumors can aggravate people.

As a working photographer I use the optical drive a fair bit, people still want images sending out on disc, especially the high res images. It's quite common for each image to be 60mb Tiff files and thats a ball ache for dropbox or email.

So, YES an ODD still has a place.

So is the cost premium tied to hardware or the efforts to make the iMac thinner? If the price increase is for design and lesser components I will just get the 2011 27" iMac now.

Well then you better start researching the PC you are going to buy. Because Apple has sales numbers to back up how popular or not matte screens were and based on their current trends it is likely not. So you aren't ever likely to get your matte screen even if you gripe for another five years. Learn how to properly light a space or get the damn PC already

This!

Seriously, i really wish people would just accept the fact that Apple is done with matte screens, and either quit their whining, or go buy a PC.

Yes, because everyone will run out and buy a $79 disc drive FROM APPLE. Not the other 500 of them available, just Apple.

Why do suggest I spend $1200 money at apple and yet buy $17 external drive from Samsung?

Apple do not treat your customer base like idiots! Thanks.
