Mine came with two dents on the bottom cover out the box.

I won't feel bad next time I scratch it.

My cat just gave me an upgrade, that's all. I now have the "character" feature. They don't even offer it as an upgrade option when you buy it! It only cost me a couple of swear words, and 5 minutes of grief concealing.

Heh! A day late and a dollar short. I'm just going to accept my new feature. Maybe I could just scratch artwork into it that integrates the cat scratches... perhaps a portrait of my cat. Like a real macbook tattoo! I could start a business, or something... professional macbook tattoo artist.

If you can't tell, I'm still trying to get over it.

You.....I like you. You seem like a cool forum dweller.

oh no! its quite bad. what do you plan to do with the damage?

I'll keep using it as is unless the glass cracks further and affects the actual screen. I'm guessing it'll cost ~$800 to refurb so I'm hoping to keep it going in current form for as long as possible.

Well, get ready, this one is funny.

So, I had my Macbook Pro in a bag on my bike. I forgot something in the house, set my bike in the middle of the garage opening (and my MBP). I walk inside to grab my iPhone, and I hear a loud crash. I stood there and just thought "Don't let that be what I think it is, don't let that be what I think it is"

I go back to the garage, and there is my baby, smashed. The bike had fallen over, the Macbook fallen out of the back, handle bars into the lid, and the garage door automatically closed (feature: if you leave the house, the garage will close on its own. Cool feature, but not in this point of time.)

So yes, after some swearing, and a bit of tears, I now have a black case, and it looks sexier then when I bought it.

Lesson: MAKE SURE YOUR LAPTOP BAG IS ZIPPED.

first scratches are always hard but its normal wear and tear. my laptop has a slight dent near the trackpad, 1mm long 0.4 mm deep... and one of my rubber/nylon feet has an accidental fingernail scratch that u can feel

itll cost u 700USD if u have warranty. i know cause they replaced mine for free cause of image retention which woud have cost the equivalent to about that amount.

this thread is shaking my nervous system, my latest mbp is still immaculate (touching wood)
I treat my stuff very very well and with the most attention/care I can put into it; aside for the looks also because of the resell factor I keep the whole packaging twist ties etc. so if I decide to sell it I can repack it almost like Mama Apple did in China

----------

And this is why you should buy a skin, case or sleeve. Anyways, that really sucks!

I would have used the cat's skin...

Little, small hairline scratch on the display after (carefully) cleaning it. :(

Forgot to say...: Retina MBP

Well, it happened... and it didn't take long. My brand new rMBP has been scratched!!!

How? My Siamese Cat. I placed my mb on the bed next to me, just near the edge. My cat decided it wanted on the bed, but failed to realize when jumping up that a slick mb surface awaited its front paws. I thought maybe they'd buff off if I rubbed hard enough, but nope. Real scratches, just above the lighted apple logo. Oh well, now I can stop caring so much. I'm free!

A part of me died a little bit on the inside when I read this. I always double check that my laptop is secure in my backpack

lol, so was mine but not on the bottom, just two chips off the anodised finish on the bottom left; I don't wear a watch or cufflinks either in case anyone asks :p

So now I've learned to stop worrying and love the bomb- er - I mean love using it and not giving a fig about scratches etc ;)

I got my first scratch and dent in mine after about 8 months of using my 2010 MBP, I closed the lid, left it on the table, picked up my phone charger, but didn't grab hold properly, stood up, fell out my hand and whack.
Nice 2 dents and a scratch on the top of my case.
Since then its got numerous scratches, but its all until that first one appears that its horrible to even think!
iPad 3 currently has nothing, had it since launch day, it still haunts me thinking its going to get scratched!

So far no noticable scratches on my 1 week old rMBP, though when I first opened in out of the box, the plastic liner that it's wrapped in had a HUGE scratch indented on the lid by the logo! I opened it in the mac store so I was about to say something....but then when I peeled it off...nada, and no scratches anywhere.

So bad QC on the liner or it saved my macbook a scratch when putting it in the box from factory. Either way was a scare and I got lucky

Not quite the latest MBP. My 2007 MBP fell out of my bag last week as I walked home from the bus stop. It's still working well, but now I'm thinking more seriously about an upgrade.

well, it's only a scneen lid, not a big deal really, because sooner or later you're going to have image retention and have that lid replace. so no worries. scratch be gone soon before you know it.

in the meanwhile, perhaps you should consider investing in a hard case, as it will protect your many screens to come.:D

*sigh* 45 days in with retina display MBP... Accidentally knocked it off my kitchen island while moving groceries. It'll now be tethered to my desk forever.

A very similar thing happened to my PowerBook, it sucks. :(

did using a microfiber cloth The one that came with mac still scratch anyone's display??

I didn't ever want to have to write to this thread but here it goes.

I had my rMBP charging on the coffee table then I walked next to it and managed to pull the charging cable with my leg. The plug got under the laptop and did a 2 inch scratch. One just can't be too careful with these.

Hope you haven't bought Apple Care yet... Take it in, tell them that you want to buy it but are scarred that they wont cover anything anymore since you have dropped it, despite it not being damaged at all. They might offer to repair it, or at least make not of it on your apple care note so that they know any future failure is not due to the drop.

I really don't want to write in this thread... Bought my new mbp in February. Went home today and somehow when I was closing the lid to go for dinner, a fork landed and scratched it by the track pad. I have a case, a sleeve and even a keyboard protector to make sure my mbp is safe. But it was all in vain and now I have two s shaped silver scratches... :'(

I hear the first is always the hardest...

First dent came from a metal vase that I keep on my kitchen table. I moved the laptop away from me and the back of the lid hit it. It's a barely noticeable dent...if I didn't know it was there, I would've missed it.

The bottom of the case has some scratches on it, but it's the bottom...not a big deal for me.

Never scratched or dented my 2010 MBP, it has taken a few falls from a table due to my cat but no damage external or internal. It'll be retired for a 2012 model this month, sadly due to work reasons I can't wait--this is my stop-gap measure as I wait for the Mac Pro refresh(fall 2013/early 2014?) :(

Worst scratch I ever had on an Apple notebook was a classmate nearly knocked my 12" PowerBook G4 off the table... the idiot grabbed a chair and passed it to someone without saying anything to me, the chair leg scratched the lid and my PB was 4" from falling off the table to certain death

...not a MBP, in 2007 a classmate of mine knocked my Thinkpad T61 off the table while pulling out a chair at a coffee shop while working on a class project. The 'pad fell 5 feet and broke a toe, amazingly the HDD sensor put the drive into parking mode as it fell--zero damage to the Thinkpad, I say the persons' foot took all the shock/damage :D

Why don't you get this and apply it to the bottom and top. I have this installed since day one. It perfectly matches the aluminum trim and no one can tell its installed unless inspected very closely or a not installed properly.

Just take your time when installing it

LINK

Out of sight, out of mind. It will also prevent futures scratches and scuffs. I only got the top and bottom.
