I personally did the test between both, I do not need to feel confident, I know that the i5 works great and much cooler, quiet and better battery life than the i7, I can wait an extra 50 seconds for an iMovie project to export.

EXACTLY and i scored a WIN :):):):):) by going for I-5/8GB/512GB SSD (the Killer speed one:):))

----------

16% battery left after 5 hours of Safari browsing (5-12 tabs), music/podcast streaming, iMessage usage (1 chat).

i7/8/256

That's pretty sad.....that i-7 is a battery killer :(

B/w what are your thoughts on the 512GB SSD...i just bought that one yesterday for my 11' I-5/8GB RAM air.. I was torned off b/w buying a 3.5 pound tall time-capsule 270$ 2TB (that only lets us use that HDD in it for back-up and not really as an external HDD -- i know you can connect a separate HDD via USB but that defeats the purpose of that 2TB just for back-up only...and 6 antenna's for 802.11ac)

It depends on how you use it. Is it your main machine? How much storage do you currently use? Do you need all of that content with you at all times or just when you're home? There are great cheap external drives (you can get 1TB USB 3 drives for about $50-$80 now).

It really depends. If you think you need the space, then you need the space.

Wow man...looks like i was sleeping in the caves somewhere lol... a 1TB USB3.0 drives seems wow...which brings me to another question i.e. Mac air 2013 11' supports only USB 2.0? Will we get the USB 3.0 speeds?

I ordered a 512GBSSD already for i-5 and yes it is Going to be my main machine now....(my old xps m1330 had 320GB out of which only 30GB is free) and on top of that i have a western digital 1TB HDD passport that has been filled up till 700GB (too many movies i guess)

So this is my whole situation ...what are your recommendations ? Save 270$ by changing my 512 SSD to 256 SSD ? buy a time-capsule ? buy a 1tB USB ? .....?

Sounds about right compared to my i7 real world use too.

You guys are bumming me out! My i7 version will be here Monday and I was really looking forward to something approaching that 9 hour battery life... :(

Keep in mind that this is only the first cycle. The battery got a lot better around 70% after my initial setup. You'll probably like it, especially if you need the power.

I'm at about 5:30 hours with 8% now.

I think you can get 6 hours or non stop use.

So is i7 11' officially a battery disaster --> 70% sure it is

----------

Mine too, same type of usage and took 5 hours of battery till it went off.

i5/4/128

LOL---> What !!! an i-5 switching off at zero battery after 5 years usage ? Only if you did insane Gaming on it i guess...!

I wouldn't call it a disaster, but it'll be interesting to see how the i5 version is.

----------

Um okay. It's been charging for less than an hour and it's up at 70% already all the way from 0%. Yeah right.

Just googling around, facebook and text editor... Just 1.5 hours more than my 2011 model, very frustrating.

Same happening here, what is it supposed to mean????

Probably. About 5 hours and 45 minutes at 3%.

How much does your i5 get?

I've managed 5 hours 48 minutes on the i7 yesterday.

The i5 test was about 4 1/2 hours of regular safari-mail then it went to sleep and then 1 1/2 hours of same safari-mail, youtube light browsing the first day, the second day I killed whatever was lef tin the battery with 4 hours of heavy working attached to a full brightness thunderbolt display while on battery.

Those 4 hours attached to the thunderbolt were pretty heavy usage with Win 7 in VM, Photoshop, Coda, PHP server running, iPhoto, etc

I believe depending on your work you can get 8-9 hours but all scenarios are different for each individual person.

For what I'll be using the laptop it should last two days without charging like it did last Sunday-Monday.

Remember that after all this crazy tests and the initial excitement fades away battery will last much longer as you are not going to be using the laptop as much as the first couple of days, same goes for the iPhone, iPad etc. (in other words we will get our life back :p )

Lol...that doesn't really justify i-7, head-to-head ==> i-5 has won over i-7 in battery life, being more cooler, and no fans....!!

We all know usage etc...keeping off everything other than screen may keep your i-7 on for 16 hours haha....!

As a consolation for losing some processor speed :( the i5 comes with a Samsung display, I have two i5 with Samsung and the i7 with LG and I can clearly tell that the Samsung looks much better contrast wise and and overall display, colors, fonts, etc.

Did you run both machines via Thunderbolt and the same amount of time.

Thunderbolt absolutely kills the battery. (Not sure why but it does.)
It literally cuts my rMBP battery time in 1/2 if not more.

Yeah –my i7 has an LG, also. Here's hoping the i5 comes with a Samsung display.

So far it seems they are coming with a Samsung, I bought the first 11" on wwdc day straight from Apple online and the one that came today was from Amazon.

The I5 is so quiet and so much cheaper. I don't do anything that warrants the slightly better I7. I would rather save the money and get a iPad mini.

Yes, the i5 went on for 4 hours AFTER being on battery since 2:40PM the day before for another 4-5 hours.

The i7 went into panic mode, fan started running as son as it was plugged for about 1 hour and the battery laste about 3 1/2 before I needed to plug the laptop again.

That's what I did, i went with the cheaper i5 and got a new Time Capsule. The whole thing was still 300 cheaper than the ultimate 11"

I never got any fan noise on my i7, but the machine was ever so slightly warm when doing just basic things and, like I said, the initial run of the battery was about 6 hours.
