I talked to Apple about the potential of voiding a warranty when replacing a hard drive in the 2012 iMac. Apple said it would NOT void the warranty as long as the work was performed by Apple technician or other "qualified" repair personnel. Just thought I'd share this info with everyone.

Can you use standard 2.5" sata drives with this?

I dont see why not, just stick a 2.5 to 3.5 hard drive adapter in to get it to work (if it doesnt come with one?)

This is a good read, but dont forget that apple will try to pin anything on you they can for a modification as big as removing the screen. I talked to a representative on the phone about replacing the 1TB drive with my own SSD drive and he said that i can without voiding the warranty; however, he did give me a nice warning that if the screen ever had any issues like dead pixels, discoloring, cracks ect... expect to not be covered since mishandling it could mess it up. The insides not related to the parts you replaced will still be covered, but the screen wont because of the high chance of an "end user" messing it up when removing it and reinstalling it unprofessionally. He also said that if the screen ever falls out you will not be covered since you removed it.

If you do the install correctly its not that big of a deal, but I've actually read a few posts online about the 2012 model and (one) 2013 model screen falling out of the casing. If the glue fails and it falls out thats a $1000 replacement right their. If you never touched it, your covered if you removed it your paying for a replacement. Although this is Very unlikely from the manufacture, you will have a slight higher risk when you do it yourself (unless you buy the exact same stuff apple uses to seal it)

I was planning to do this as well, but it just wasnt worth it to me to try and save $100 by doing it my and opening myself up to other issues later down the road if i ever needed a warranty replacement. I've replaced things in my macbook pro though. Its much easier than removing a screen.

Nah- I see no need. I'm not a huge video editor, and I don't require a whole lot of horsepower under the hood (or should I say- behind the screen).

I am considering an external SSD later down the line, though.
