I leave my 2013 MBA connected to a 23" Dell monitor via DVI adaptor for days at a time. Never any issues with the fan or overheating. If the MBA isn't connected to AC power I have noticed that the battery runs down faster when an external monitor is connected however.

Hm, have no problems here with my 2013 MBA i5 and a Samsung 23" over Displayport/DVI. Never hear the fan unless I play a game.

Hmmm... Maybe the issue is on VGA? Anyone connect MBA with VGA adapter?

I watch movies through vga on my tv, because my hdmi is bad. I have not noticed a difference in heat or heard the fans. Use activity monitor to check which process is giving your cpu a trashing,

That's the problem. Activity Monitor didn't show any significant energy uses. The black hinge between keyboard and screen also very hot. All of the issue disappears as soon as I detach the external keyboard.

Are you showing all processes, not only yours?

You should be able to determine a process which use a lot of energy under the energy tap or lot of cpu on the cpu tab. An app like menu stat or Macs Fan Control can also display temperatures around the machine, But don't know how much the gpu temperatur can differ from cpu, when internal. Perhaps enough to notice a difference, with or without external vga connection.. Maybe there is a physical defect somewhere in your vga-connection, which is putting a load on the hardware.

Im currently running 2 x 4k and 1 1080p on a 2015 air 11.6" , using thunderbolt + D3100 Dock (runs 1 4k and up to 2x1080p through usb 3)

they monitors work great for me , coding.

I have a 2013 13" Air and a 4k monitor I'd like to use with it.

How is the graphics performance with this set up? Is the interface responsive or do you notice choppiness when dragging windows, etc. ?

I guess my thread is also quite useful for this one here.

Dear community,

I am owning a EVGA Displayport HUB but unfortunately it does not work. My Acer (DVI(HDMI)) and Viewsonic (DVI) shows the same picture, so its cloned and not using extended or mst mode.

Right now I am asking myself if I purchased the wrong adapters, since I read with MST you should use active adapters.

Would you have any hints for my problem? Someone already got it running?

Config:

Macbook Air 11.1" (Early 2015)

1x ViewSonic VP191s (VGA and DVI)
1x Acer AL2216W (DVI (to HDMI)

Update in "German Language":

Kleines Update:

Aktuell Konfiguration:
- DELL 34" mit DP OUT an einem weiteren Monitor ergibt kein Bild.

Test mit einem ASUS Zenbook (Intel 520 / Win10) funktioniert
- ASUS Zenbook - Mini DP zu DP Kabel - DELL 34" - DP zu DVI Adapter (Aktiv - von UGREEN) - ViewSonic VP1919s bzw. ACER AL2216W
