2014 Formula 1 Thread

I hadn't been born at the time of Senna's, or Ratzenberger's death, but I've seen tons of videos and heard lots of stories of Bruno's just absolutely amazing driving, how talented he was, etc.

RIP To both.

I remover the race when Ayrton (not Bruno) died. I can't believe it was 20 years ago. I feel old.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the death Ayrton Senna, one of the greatest drivers to have driven a grand prix car.

Twenty years on and no answer as to the cause of his crash and I doubt another twenty years will make any difference.

Does anybody remember where they were when they heard Senna had been killed? I watched the race and spent the rest of the day hoping for good news but at 9pm on Sunday 1st May 1994 the dreadful news came through.

Also a time to remember Roland Ratzenberger who was killed 20 years ago yesterday and never got a chance to show his talent in F1. RIP to both, never to be forgotten :)

Vettel to pit: "I've lost drive"
Reply: "Tough luck"

OK, maybe not... :^)

Hopes for tomorrow:

HAM #1, over Nico

Massa to finish in front of all of his old teammates; he's due and the track seems to suit him

Kimi over Alonso

RIC to finish in front of VET

Oh heck, just have fingerboy blow his transmission on the parade lap, get it over with. He's starting 15th due to a gridspot penalty anyways.

I disagree. I'd like to see Vettel finish (with no issues with car) 16th and RIC to come third. :)

Well I was half right!

A great race from Hamilton today. He had the slower tyres on but still kept in front of Nico today (again!). Glad his team mate is taking it to him. However Hamilton could win all the races this season with Nico second bar the last one and lose the championship at the last race because of the double points rule. Stupid.
Only another week until Monaco. Can't see it being a 50 second gap between the mercs and the rest there!

Given the unique nature of Monaco, I doubt very much that should the Mercedes drivers find themselves in a similarly commanding lead at the end of the race as they did in Barcelona that the team will let them race each other to the chequered flag in the same way that they have allowed in the previous races.

There will likely be an instruction to hold station after the last round of pit stops (if not earlier). The consequences of a lock-up at a place like Monaco, which both Mercedes drivers managed to do during the closing laps in Barcelona while racing, are much greater and could mean the end of the race for one or both drivers.

Really thought that Nico would get past Lewis once the gap was at 9 tenths of a second.

I doubt that at Monaco the Mercedes are that far ahead of everyone again. Their speed advantage will be leveled out, and I think that this will be the perfect race for Red Bull (hopefully Daniel) or Ferrari (hopefully Kimi) can steal a win away from Mercedes. Although, maybe Nico can stop his string of seconds and get on the top spot of the podium, he won at Monaco last year.

nico to win monaco…

Most boring of the year so far.
Will have to start voodoo-root against the mercs hoping to see some competitve races

I expect it will be 2009 all over again. Except unlike 2009, Mercedes will be able to continue to develop the car all year where Brawn GP could not.

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing Lewis win. However it is rather boring to watch.

If this trend continues, I figure you will see less and less of Lewis and Nico and the television coverage will be for 3rd place and on. The Spanish Grand Prix it was starting to go that way.

the 'problem' is that it is intrinsic with a sport based on competing technology that one version will be better then the others.
it was always like that, with very few exceptions: every season one car is better than the others, and it will dominate.
even the heavy regulations cannot do away with it.

every 'solution' is somehow gimmicky, as it sacrifices something.

one avenue they haven't explored, is messing with the starting order.
something like a reverse order, or partial reverse order.

it is unpractical and likely unsafe to put the very slowest car in front, and the fastest in the back, but one thing they could do is to have the regular quails for the first two sessions, and when you get to the top ten cars of the day, have them start in the reverse order, based on WC points.

you still have quails, because you still need to get into that top ten group, but you ensure entertaining races with plenty of passing, and a very close championship season.
No more processionary races, but everything 'pole' becomes irrelevant

So predictions for the weekend. If Hamilton gets poll, its very hard to see this going any other way. But then again Nico does well here, so who knows. I'm sure the rest of the pack won't be as far back due to the slower nature of the circuit.

Whoever gets pole is the likely winner, but this race is easy to lose in the pits and Mercedes doesn't have the fastest pit stops. They're often half a second to a second slower than their competitors.

If Nico did that on purpose...

We'll see what happens, the team can even things up tomorrow!

:^)
