Tough loss for England. I have a good feeling about team USA. Japan did show vulnerabilities in their game, and I think the USA can win if they score early. I don't think the USA should try to beat Japan on a technical style of play but instead go all out.

I agree with you, being unpredictable is the way to go.

Lots of criticism for FIFA.

Artificial turf? They didn't dare to try it with the men's World Cup so they tried with the women. Especially the outside turfs heat up pretty much because on most turfs a dark granules is used. Even wetting it before the game and in halftime doesn't help much. After 10-15 min the turf gets really hot. Apparently only on one artificial turf a light-coloured granules is used.
But the abrasions are not the worst thing. Sometimes the ball get's slower, changes direction or jumps back unpredictable.

Accommodation? How can it be that opponents have to stay in the same hotel, use the same dining rooms and so on?

Extension of participating nations? Bring countries like Ecuador or Ivory Coast really a benefit to the sport? Scores of 10:0 or 10:1 are not good advertisement.

If the USA wins, we will establish as a great fast break team but we can't do that forever. Though soccer is not in our blood, the popularity in recent years will help us produce more technical players in the future. This isn't basketball so technical is everything in this sport much like putting is to golf.

Given enough time, our huge country could become technical like Japan or Germany and could become THE team to beat, much like the Soviets were in Olympic ice hockey for a long time. We are a physical team and this could beat Japan but it could also backfire. We will be forced to work an aggressive game since we don't have nearly the finesse Japan has.

Sunday should be good and it could go either way. England almost got by Japan by using a physical game and it was evenly matched.

Sorry this is as good as it gets for team USA and it wont get any better, your NCAA has given you a huge advantage over the rest of the world in the womans sport where the europeans are only now starting to real invest in the womans game.

And yet the USA and Canada are still the two biggest investors.

England deserved the win, but not on that call.

Sigh. I guess it makes up somewhat for the semi-final result.

EDIT: Houghton and Bardsley in particular played a great game. Aluko changed the game complex for the lionesses on the offensive side, shocked that she couldn't find a way past the German defense.

Given their history in WC and history against Germany, this win was the best result the women's team has ever seen and they should be proud.

If Japan wins big against the USA today then England will still always think that they could have gone all the way. Whatever the future brings, all eyes will be on England's Lionesses for years to come and they will be a contender.

While I want the USA to win, I would rather see a very close game that comes down to the last few possessions. With the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and the World Cup championship in 2011 it's pretty much established that Japan is no fluke and in these years the best competition that could go against team USA. Any other team going against the USA would have made this a far less interesting final.

At least this isn't so mismatched that it's a game the USA has to win because they are far better. We are talking evenly matched teams that are both the best. The USA has a great defense that is unmatched and Japan is undefeated in the fast paced flurry of games in first round and has the ability to go big with any player.

The USA could find great players from other teams, as was mentioned, and plan their defense accordingly but Japan is so unpredictable as to who can come out big with anybody that the USA will be spread thin and have to be everywhere at the same time and not give an inch watching every player. I don't know if the USA can hold up but it's one more game.

Anyway, expect great defense from both teams and a low scoring game where winner wins only by one goal, not two or more.

I hope this is epic.

I agree, want a good match with the US winning.

Finally, now I can rest. It's been a long time and after the first two World Cup wins I was under the impression we could do this all the time. I will cherish this one.
