So I’ve been offered $1200 today for my 2017 13” 8gb i5 512gb pro.

I also bought the 2017 13” bads Air last month at Best Buy when it was on sale for $650. I’m wondering why I bought it though because I already have a 2017 pro and a 2017 MacBook. Should I take the $1200 offer and return the 2017 Air to Best Buy? I need to make a decision soon. Today is day 45 so after today I can’t return it to Best Buy (I’m an elite plus member). Or should I hang on to the air and take the offer for my pro and pay the difference? Or should I just hang on to my 2017 pro. Just got keyboard replacement so keyboard is great and the most extensive thing I do is dabble in photoshop.

I did what I rarely do and went from a 2017 15” i7 3.1/16GB/2TB to a 2018 15” i9 2.9/32GB/2TB.

The main reason was doing a fair amount more jobs on location than in year’s past and needing 32GB of ram for some of the larger files I work with in my full time job as a photographer.

In terms of how it stacks up, it’s a good thing it is a lot faster because time is money and I lost of ton of coin on the upgrade.

Before selling my 2017, I did a test of exporting 100 Nikon D850 raw files to high quality jpeg in Lightroom CC, moderate adjustments, timing is in minutes:

2017= 6:15
2018= 4:20
iMac Pro 10 core= 1:45

Like I said, time is money and the faster I can get the work done, the less time I spend on a computer and the more time I spend living an actual life.

The downsides at the moment seem to be heat and significantly less battery life when under load, time will tell how that pans out.

Control the temptation and save the money. Let this notebook become less than you need and then spend the money on something that will be fit for your need. Current notebook suffices. That is what I told myself too.

Invest that money, let it grow. In 2-3 years time, that money thus invested will only serve for helping you upgrade when you really need to upgrade, not merely want to. The reasoning of doing what you want, there is only one life, goes only so far. There is joy to be derived out of saving and watching that money grow instead. For me, that money was too much ($2300 at least) so I was better off just investing. It helps that I write, and edit photos, so my use case will not gain too much from a quad core, to justify my spending $2300 today. I feel, I will be more satisfied with a res bump than just these evolved goodies of 2018 notebooks, for my use.

I could spend some money and go for a new 2018 notebook (coming from a 2016 13") but there is no value in the new notebooks for me good enough that I cannot have on my 2016. I will upgrade when there is a screen res bump, not before.

Everyone keeps talking about the quad core but I don’t know if I would ever even notice it my work is so light so I don’t know. I could just return the 2017 Air and sell my 2014 11” Air and just keep the extra money. I’m not sure why I thought I needed four MacBooks when I only use my 2017 13” pro and 2017 12”.

Sold my 2017 macbook pro 13 inch 256gb for 800 bucks..I finally received a birthday coupon from best buy yesterday for the month of august(Expires August 26th) so was thinking..price match apple education for 1699..minus the student discount of 150(From best buy) and the 10 percent off makes this a very good deal what do you all think? The 150 student discount expires on august 4th but will see what comes out after wards if they have another one

Would be VERY surprised if they let you do the student discount, price match, AND 10% off coupon. Best Buy has become pretty stringent on stacking coupons especially on Mac items. That would essentially be 400$ off a brand new item.

Can anyone who has had a 2017 model comment on real world performance compared to the 2018? Are there any noticeable differences web browsing, word processing, and some light photoshop? That's about the gist of what I do with my 2017 and trying to figure out if its worth it.

In checkout I have that option..to put in ANY promo code..and I didnt even know I had a best buy birthday coupon til I was checking out my account last night and there it was, asking me if I want to apply it

I can already tell you it is not worth it, you have to really need the improvements like I do to make it worth losing money on the 2017 enough to buy the 2018. For an example of real world, need-it-for-work use, look at my comparison in my post above...

So, are you exporting enough to save you, say 1 clear hour at least in the day?

EDIT:

Oh wait, saw that you have an iMac Pro as well, that is a far better time saver. :)

I listed my 2017 2.9GHz 16GB 560Pro on ebay for $1800CAD, will see where it ends, I figured if it's not priced lower than same spec refurb, why buy it? Just buy refurb from apple. I would love to break $3000CAD but I doubt I will.

anyone go from 2017 15 inch to 2018 13 inch?

I'm debating it, but I'm giving myself a month to think this whole thing through. This time next year I'll probably have a desktop again so the need for a 15" laptop won't be necessary.

Then again, I'll probably wish for the 2019 model. It never ends...:(

I will probably upgrade from my day 1 2016 15". Really attracted by 32GB RAM and going from 1TB to 2TB storage, but will wait for some more reports/reviews to decide which CPU.

you all are really making me second guess over here lol.. I'm upgrading from a 2016 15" / 2.7 i7/ 16gigs/ 512. to a 2018 15" / 2.6 i7 / 32gig/ 512... I was thinking about upgrading the storage to 1tb, but I just didn't see the point.. All my photos are in iCloud, Apple Music, docs.. everything is in the cloud.. I get needing local storage.. but upgrading to 1tb for $400.. Would have been just an expensive luxury.. so I passed. saying if I need more space, I'll just use my external hard drive

I upgraded from a 2017 base 13 inch ONLY because I was able to sell mine to a friend for a decent price. That plus selling the free beats headphones only put me about $200 out of pocket, which was worth it to me for the improved keyboard.

I found out the India pricing.

Base 13" with Touch Bar now starts at roughly USD 2250. (8GB, 256GB, 2.3)
Base 15" with Touch Bar now starts at roughly USD 2985 (16GB, 256GB, 2.2)

With these prices, here is the scene: My old 2016 fetches me $1300, and I need to shell out another $900 odd for the same RAM and disk space, but quad core 13. Not at all worth going.

If I choose to go 15" I will have to shell out $1650 over and above what I am getting for the 2016 that I have, to get me 6 cores, a dedicated graphics, larger screen, 16GB, same disk space. This can be considered, but :: the wonderful portability of my 13" in my DSLR bag will be lost, the moment I go 15".

What this means is that I should perhaps just pass on them, since I do not clearly need them. Saving me money for a better refresh (for me) with a higher res screen minimum. Temptation is great, I am trying to not give in.

One more thing. Prices of sleeves. 13" sleeve is priced at roughly $255, 15 inch at $285, 12 inch at $210.

Well, I wasn't going to upgrade but I got $1400 out of my 2017 and used some Best Buy in-store credit so ended up not paying anything for the upgrade. I opted for the 13" 8gb 512gb of ram model again. Best Buy did not have any 16gb ones, and the most I do is play around in photoshop so I am sure I will be fine. So I want to say this about the keyboard. This may be my favorite apple keyboard yet. I absolutely love it. It feels really comfortable and easy to use. I also love the new speakers. They are a pretty big improvement in my opinion. I always thought it was weird that my 12" MacBook had better speakers than my 2017 MBP.

I don't notice any real life usage difference in the things that I do than with my 2017 though as far as how quick things are. Had I had to pay for the upgrade, I probably would opt to keep the 2017, even though this keyboard feels a whole lot better to me. Overall though I am happy with it. I was happy with my 2017 though as well. I plan on keeping this machine for the next three years or so. I have 60 days to get Apple Care Plus. Should I get it?
