It worked!

Looks like the key is to go [DVI-HDMI-USBc], not [DVI-MiniDisplayPort-USBc]

What size ACD is that pictured? a 23" ACD or 30" ?

I have tried two USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapters that work with the 30" ACD when paired with Apple's Dual DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CJHHTR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (currently out of stock)

Are you sure both of these works with an Apple 30" ACD? as neither state they can drive 2560 x 1600

Anyone got an update on these adapters? i have the 30" Cinema Display.

it's almost like it's easier to get a eGPU connect the display to that graphics card ;)

I might get on those later on, så maybe I should just on till the eGPU gets up and running.

I have a TB 2016 15" MBP connected to a 30" Cinema Display using this Apple connector (which was how I connected by 2011 MBP)

http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter?fnode=8b

But now with the addition of an Apple thunderbolt 3 to 2 connector, and a USB C to USB connector...

However it all works! I am daisy chaining an Apogee Thunderbridge but can't see that making it work when it wouldn't otherwise...

Now if only the computer wouldn't keep crashing with many plug ins in Logic Pro I might consider keeping it...

Okay, so I need the dual link dvi to Mini DisplayPort and then thunderbolt 3 > 2 adapter. And already have one those USB-C to USB.

I thought thunderbolt 3 > 2 adapter didn't work with displays.
[doublepost=1483865431][/doublepost]Could you try without the apogee thunder ridge in the middle just to see if that's works?

I read that too but thought I would just try with what I had! I'll try without the Apogee when I'm back in the studio tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks. So it sounds like I need that adapter. But hell the Apples Dual Link DVI adapter is expensive!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately connecting directly using the Apple dual link DVI adapter and the thunderbolt and usb dongles does not work! I have no idea why it doesn't work, but when daisy chaining through the Apogee Thunderbridge (i.e. Apogee connected via Thunderbolt adapter to MBP, Mini Display port out from the Dual Link DVI adapter plugged into the Apogee, USB out from DVI adapter connected to USB dongle into MBP) it works fine.

Maybe the Thuderbridge acts like a hub for compatibility? Maybe you can use a Thunderbolt hub and it will work or even some other device that has two thunderbolt ports like the Lacie drive?

Sad news. Well I think I'm gonna save the money for the eGPU and connect the screen directly to the graphics card.

Anyone got a recommendation for a name brand USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter?

Anyone got a recommendation for a name brand USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter?

The one I got off of eBay was this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/172378974092?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

It's out of stock though, but there are some awfully similar looking adapters available if you search.

Someone in one of these Macrumors threads reported good results with this one:
https://www.amazon.com/AllSmartLife-DisplayPort-Aluminium-resolution-ChromeBook/dp/B017TZTMBG/

Unfortunately, this kind of adapter is in and out of stock everywhere and from what I've been reading, it's going to be a crapshoot regardless of if you get a name brand version or not. I haven't seen one of these stand alone USB-C to mini DP adapters put out by a reputable brand, but I think there are a few established brands that have a miniDP port in a combo adapter.

For these stand alone ones, I figure that there's a good chance the branded version and the generic one is coming from the same place anyway so I decided to roll the dice on the eBay version. It wasn't a tough decision with the eBay version being $11 with free shipping vs. $25-30 + shipping on Amazon.

Have you been able adjust brightness on the Apple Cinema display? I would imagine you would have to connect the USB cable to your laptop.

The brightness controls on the side of the display work as expected. You don't see the brightness indicator appear on screen with the bar that shows you how bright the display is at the time, but the brightness does change. Yes, you do have to plug in the USB port. There's no way around that. You've always had to do that to power the 30" ACD over the dual link DVI adapter.

Hi.
I have an ageing DVI 23 inch Apple Cinema Display which I have successfully connected to the new 15 inch MBP.
I tried a couple of different DVI to usb C adapters with no success. The computer recognised that the Cinema Display was attached but only displayed a black screen.
What worked was to convert the DVI from the Cinema Display to HDMI with a small cheap generic adapter, and then use an HDMI to usb C adapter to connect to the computer. The HDMI to usb C adapter I am using comes from De-lock and supports 4K at 60 Hz, although I also tried a cheaper HDMI to usb C adapter with only supported 1920 x 1200 (the upper limit for single link DVI I believe, which the 23 inch Cinema Display has) and it also worked.

Good luck

Thanks. Adaptors ordered, fingers crossed

Congratulations on getting this working. I ended up EBay'ing mine and getting the LG 5K.

Thanks. I have three of these 30” ACDs so I hang on to them and use every day. Still the only large display with Matte screen

I will upgrade displays when apple supposedly launch new displays (hopefully apple designed) with the new Mac Pro modular.
